10 Netflix Shows and Movies to Binge Watch Over Winter Break

Alyssa loves curling up on the couch with a hot cup of black coffee to binge watch the best programs on Netflix.

Winter has arrived. It's bitterly cold and many parts of the country are covered in snow and ice. In these conditions, my favorite activity is staying inside, cozied up on the couch, watching Netflix.

Netflix has come a long way. I remember the days of getting online to order True Blood and waiting for the DVD's to arrive so I could binge watch an entire season. Back then, there weren't many streaming options. Fast forward to today: the DVD option is gone, replaced with a variety of content that would take you months to watch. There are so many options! This can be a blessing and a curse. On one hand, you're guaranteed to find something that interests you. On the other, good luck browsing through everything. It usually takes me a good hour to look through all my options before finally selecting something that peaks my interest. Of course, I have to add several new shows and movies to my list along the way.

It's very common to see friends ask for Netflix recommendations on social media. I see at least two friends per week asking for suggestions on Facebook. This gave me a grand idea: why not create a list of my own favorites to recommend?

The following is a list of my personal favorite TV shows and movies found on Netflix. Happy viewing!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I grew up watching Sabrina The Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart. It was a part of the famous TGIF line up. Those were the days. I was apprehensive about this series initially, but quickly fell in love with how dark this show is. The Netflix series follows along with the original Archie comic and it is intriguing. You'll be hooked after the first episode. Netflix just released a special winter solstice episode and it was announced that they would be releasing season 2 in April! This is a must-see!

The Ranch Part 6

The wait is over! Last week, I received an email from Netflix letting me know they released the latest part in this amazing series. Netflix seems to know when you need to productive and that's when they release new episodes of your favorite shows. In this latest installment, they tackle Rooster's disappearance and Colt and Abby have their baby. There's plenty of laughs and some serious moments along the way. I'm ready for part 7 now.

The Evolution of Us

Have you ever wondered how humans came to be? This two-part series investigates the origins of humans and how our DNA shaped our evolution, and continues to do so today. It's a quick and interesting look at our history as a species and discusses what the future might hold as science and technology continue to advance.

Outlaw King

Netflix released the trailer for this movie a few weeks before it was released. I instantly added it to my list. If you love historical type movies, this one is for you! It's based on a true story and follows David Bruce as he rises up and tries to win Scotland back from the English. It's full of adventure and action and will have you on the edge of your seat. I am fascinated with all things history, and found myself falling down the rabbit hole, researching how David Bruce is related to Mary, Queen of Scots, and then researching all the kings and queens back to the ancient tribes of Brittany.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

As I was browsing through Netflix, I watched the trailer for this and saw James Franco was in it. I couldn't stop laughing at his part, when he asks the crying man next to him, "first time," as they are getting ready to be hanged. After my son was tucked away in bed, my husband and I decided to give this a try. It was hilarious! It's a movie, broken down into six short stories, all set in the wild west. This was different than most things I watch, but well worth the time!

Secrets of Great British Castles

I love learning about history and as an American, I am fascinated by British royal history. I came across this show a few years ago, and watched all the episodes of season 1 in an afternoon. It's hosted by Dan Jones, the coolest historian in a leather jacket. He takes you through the stories of all the great British castles, better than anything out there today. I was thrilled when Netflix put season 2 up, and again, I set aside an entire afternoon to soak it all in. My hope is that all of you will get hooked on this show, too. Tell your friends and have them watch all the episodes. Then, Netflix will see that we need a season 3.

Patriot Act with Hassan Minhaj

If you like to stay up to date with current events and try to find humor in our chaotic world, this is a great show for you. Hassan is a comedian that breaks down hot topics like Saudi Arabia and Immigration Enforcement as well as giving us information on Oil and Amazon. There are seven episodes to binge and hopefully Hassan will be back next year with more!

The Little Mermaid

When I first heard that Disney was remaking The Little Mermaid, I was skeptical. The 1989 cartoon movie is one of my childhood favorites and I didn't know how this was going to turn out. I certainly wasn't going to pay to see it in the theater or seek it out to rent. However, Netflix recently released the movie and after watching the trailer, I thought I would give it a chance. I'm glad I did. The movie follows Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale more closely than the 80's version. There's no silly Scuttle to give us knowledge of the human world. Instead, we get a darker, more magical version that will have you holding your breath and rooting for Cam, Ellie, and Elizabeth until the very end.

Nailed It

If you love sweet treats, reality TV, and Pinterest fails, Nailed It is a perfect choice for you. This is a fun series that showcases real people trying to recreate culinary confections. Each episode is about a half-hour long and features three contestants. In the first round, the contestants try to recreate a small treat like a cookie or cupcake. In the second and final round, the contestants test their skills, trying to bake an amazing detailed cake. It features three judges: hilarious Nicole Byer, legend Jacques Torres, and a celebrity guest judge. Nicole and Jacques have an incredible energy and chemistry. This show is highly entertaining and sure to make you laugh.

Netflix has released a special holiday season of Nailed It that I'm currently watching.

Bill Nye Saves The World

Like most kids in the late 80's and 90's, I grew up watching Bill Nye The Science Guy. Programming back then was genius and Bill Nye remains one of my favorites to this day. I even have my son watch old episodes to reinforce concepts he learns in science class. I was so excited when Bill Nye came out with this brand new series, Bill Nye Saves The World. It's the same Bill Nye we all know and love, discussing real issues in science and technology that affect us all as adults. With the exception of a few episodes, this is a great series for the entire family, and there are three seasons to binge. Entertainment and learning all at the same time!

We watched about half of Scruggs...the first two chapters were hilarious. We are currently watching "The 100" and we are unashamedly hooked on it. :)
