8 Single Season Shows That Are Ripe for a Resurgence

Arthur is an avid television and movie fan with horror being his favored genre. If you can name it he has probably seen it, twice.

I had to choose my words carefully when I decided on the title of this piece because it is a bit of a hybrid. Some of these one season shows are ready for a reboot while others would be better served with a second season to catch fans up with the characters they once loved. What each entry does have in common is that it covers a television show that was cut down before it had a chance to flourish. In an era of reboots and internet influence any of these single season shows could pop back up with enough fan support, so let's talk about them.

The Oblongs

The Show

It's really sad that this animated show aimed at an adult audience didn't last more than a single season. The show is about an All-American family who just happens to be mutated thanks to their house's proximity to toxic waste. Apart from that gimmick, it is a decently humorous situational comedy which stars the nearly infallible Will Ferrell as the head of the household.

The Verdict

Since this is an animated show, it would be easy to jump right back into production. You wouldn't even need the original voice actors or artists to come back necessarily. I think that The Oblongs were before their time and could thrive in a block of time set for adult animation like Fox's Sunday night lineup or Adult Swim.

My So Called Life

The Show

It is hard to believe that a show that was so important to a generation only lasted a single season. This show tackled many teen issues and was way ahead of its time in many ways. It also sparked the careers of incredible actors like Claire Danes and Jared Leto. It has amassed a following that wouldn't even be considered "cult, " and it is the most obvious show to make this list because of it.

The Verdict

My So-Called Life was the first TV series that ever had an online campaign to try and save the show. Unfortunately, Netflix wasn't around back then to answer that call. This show could totally get the Netflix Gilmore Girls treatment as a catch up to the characters that were so beloved. Alas, given the busy schedules of the show's stars it is unlikely that we will ever see a My So-Called Life reunion.

Firefly

The Show

I know that you are probably sick of hearing about Firefly, so am I. I don't even know that much about the show, but I knew that I had to include it on the list because the internet loves this show. It is a futuristic show that takes place in space. It stars Nathon Fillion who is one of the most underrated actors working in my opinion and was created by Joss Wheadon who I don't think could make a bad show if he tried. Firefly did get a movie that went to theaters, but even that isn't good enough for ravenous fans.

The Verdict

Given the internet's obsession with this show, it would probably be a massive hit if it was brought back. Honestly, I am surprised that Netflix hasn't resurrected this one yet. I could see a show like this picking up a wee after the last episode left off and making a quip about how long the previous week had felt.

Awake

The Show

I was genuinely mad when Awake got canceled because the idea behind the show was so fresh. It centered around a cop who has a car accident with his family in the car. This sends him into a split world where, in one reality, his son is alive, and wife is death and vice versa in the other reality. To make the dual realities even more confusing, what happens in one reality often leads to the solving of a crime in the alternate reality. Unfortunately, this show was never picked up for a second season, and it left fans feeling cheated.

The Verdict

Given the fact that this show doesn't have a huge cult following and its two biggest stars have found success in two popular Netflix shows, bringing back the original cast for a second season will probably never happen. Instead, producers should look into rebooting this show because there is so much that can be done with the story.

Freaks and Geeks

The Show

I would probably be strung up by the internet as a whole if I did not mention Freaks and Geeks in this list. This is probably the most egregious single season cancellation there ever was. When you look back at the amazing cast that starred in this show, it is laughable that it was ever canceled. It is a high school comedy that resonated with so many of us who felt, or still feel like we were the outcasts in school.

The Verdict

Given the superstar status of the show's stars, Freaks and Geeks is ripe for a reboot. They could even do a successor to the original show where characters from the original show up for cameos. I think the internet would eat up a Freaks and Geeks: The Next class.

Clone High

The Show

This show was cut down way before its time due to its lack of an audience at a time and a somewhat distasteful take on some of the world's greatest historical figures. In other words, this animated show was too funny for censors and watch groups at the time.

The Verdict

Just like The Oblongs, this show could be great in an adult time slaught. A lot has changed in the TV landscape since Clone High originally debuted, and it would be pretty calm by today's standards. This show deserves a reboot, and I am betting that it would do a lot better today than it did when it was first released.

Terriers

The Show

Terriers is about an ex-cop and his criminal buddy partnering up to run an unlicensed private investigation service. There is a ton of action and plenty of comedy to go around. Unfortunately, the show did not garner enough viewers to earn it a second season, something that one of the key players, Donal Logue knows all too much about.

The Verdict

This show is ripe for another season bringing back the original cast. It may be a little tricky considering Logue has finally found the success he deserves in Fox's popular Batman prequel Gotham. If only for one more season to give fans a satisfying ending, Terriers needs a second chance.

The Gates

The Show

The Gates is a guilty pleasure kind of show that I think was just a little before its time. It centers around a gated community of supernatural beings including werewolves, vampires, and witches and is basically a science fiction version of the Desperate Housewives. The show has gained a small cult following though during its original run it wasn't even able to complete the season before being yanked from the air,

The Verdict

A rebranding and recasting of this show are exactly what it would need to make it work in 2017. The Gates has good bones and fans would love to see a reboot of this often campy pseudo-drama. I could see it working out better on SyFy than it did on ABC.

There are a ton of single season shows out there, some deserved to be shut down early, others just didn't have the support of the company even if they had a dedicated fan base. These eight single season series are just some of the most popular and ready to see a resurgence backed by the voraciousness of fans. If there is a one season series that you think deserves a second chance, please let me know in the comments I would love to hear about it.
