The fantasy/drama show True Blood premiered on HBO in 2008. The series, which is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris, quickly became beloved by fans and critics alike, and aired for seven seasons until 2014.
The story of a human who falls in love with a vampire isn’t a new one by any means, but True Blood’s unique blend of Southern Gothic romance, horror, and humour made the show stand out amongst the other vampire-themed media that was released around the same time.
Of course, the stellar casting also played a huge part in the show’s success! So where is True Blood's cast now? Let’s catch up with Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgård, Joe Manganiello, and the rest of the True Blood cast.
Anna Paquin has kept busy with both television and film since her days of playing Sookie Stackhouse. The Golden Globe-winning actress (she was awarded Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series- Drama for her role in the show in 2009), acted in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and also starred in the American comedy/drama film Furlough in 2018.
In 2017, she starred in the Canadian crime drama show Bellevue, as well as the Canadian miniseries Alias Grace (based off of the Margaret Atwood novels of the same name). She can currently been seen in the British comedy/drama show Flack.
Besides her acting career, Paquin has focused on family; she and True Blood co-star, Stephen Moyer, married in 2010, and have two children (fraternal twins) together.
Since True Blood's end, British actor Stephen Moyer has kept himself occupied with a variety of television and film roles. He starred in the 2016 British thriller Detour and also had roles in the 2015 sports drama Concussion as well as the 2017 British crime film One Last Heist.
Moyer can currently be seen on the Fox superhero series The Gifted, which is connected to Marvel’s X-Men film series. Moyer stars alongside actress Amy Acker as parents who flee with their children after discovering they have supernatural abilities.
As mentioned above, Moyer married Anna Paquin in 2010 after meeting on the set of True Blood. In addition to their twins, Moyer has two children from his previous relationships. Their family resides in Venice, Los Angeles.
Most fans will always remember Alexander Skarsgård for his role as seductive vampire Eric Northman, but Skarsgård has become quite the leading man since his True Blood days.
He’s had roles in several films, including The Giver (2014), The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015), and Zoolander 2 (2016). In 2016, he also starred as Tarzan in the live-action adventure film The Legend of Tarzan. He can next be seen on the big screen in Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set for release in 2020.
Skarsgård returned to HBO in 2017 for the drama series Big Little Lies, which he stars in with an ensemble cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, and Nicole Kidman, whom plays his wife in the show. The second season of Big Little Lies is set to premiere later in 2019. Skarsgård has received a Golden Globe, Primetime Emmy, and a Screen Actors Guild award for his role on the show.
Australian actor Ryan Kwaten left his mark as Sookie’s slow-witted brother, Jason Stackhouse, but he’s found plenty of work outside of the show.
In 2014, he starred in the supernatural horror film Flight 7500. The following year, he appeared alongside Mickey Rourke and Freida Pinto in the action film Blunt Force Trauma.
Kwanten can currently been seen on The Oath, an American web series, in which he plays a cop who's part of an underground gang called The Ravens, which is made up of fellow corrupt police officers. The crime drama is produced by rapper 50 Cent and can be streamed for free on Sony’s service, Crackle.
Rutina Wesley played Sookie’s best friend, Tara Thronton, until the show’s end in 2014. Since then, Wesley has continued to find work on television. In 2015, she had a recurring role on the NBC horror show Hannibal and also made appearances on the CW superhero show Arrow from 2015-2017.
Wesley has mainly kept busy starring in Queen Sugar, a drama series produced by Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay. The show focuses on the life of three siblings (Wesley plays sister Nova Bordelon), who move to Louisiana to claim their inheritance after their father passes away. The show has received significant critical acclaim, and Wesley has been praised for her acting in the role.
In 2017, Wesley announced her engagement to her girlfriend, Shonda, but the two have yet to announce when they will be married.
Joe Manganiello wooed fans in his role of sexy werewolf Alcide Herveaux from season three and onward. However, he hasn’t done a lot of acting since True Blood’s end; in 2015, he reprised his role of “Big Dick Richie” in the sequel Magic Mike XXL, and he also acted in the superhero film Justice League in 2017.
He’s also made a few television appearances, including guest roles on the Netflix comedy One Day at a Time and a cameo on The Big Bang Theory, both in 2019.
Manganiello married fellow actress Sofia Vergara in 2015.
Sam Merlotte was always my favourite character on True Blood, mainly due to Sam Tramell’s beautifully nuanced portrayal of him.
Trammell has acted in an assortment of films and TV shows since the show ended, including a part in the 2014 film The Fault in Our Stars and the 2016 thriller Imperium. He’s had a recurring role as Ben in the NBC show This is US since 2016. He can currently be seen on the Netflix original show The Order, which is about a secret college society.
Trammell has been married to actress Missy Yager since 2003, and they have twin sons together, born in 2011.
Nelsan Ellis brought humour and heart to the screen as Tara’s flamboyant cousin, Lafayette Reynolds. The character of Lafayette was originally only meant to be part of the show for one season (as the character died in the first Southern Vampire Mysteries book), but fans loved the character of Lafayatte and Ellis’s portrayal of him so much that the show-runners brought him back for the second season and kept him on the show until its end.
Sadly, Nelsan Ellis passed away unexpectedly in 2017, at the age of 39. He had been attempting to recover from alcohol addiction, and passed due to complications from alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Ellis still leaves behind a legacy of work; besides his role in True Blood, he also starred as Martin Luther King Jr. in the critically acclaimed drama The Butler (2012), and had a role in the biographical film Get on Up, which is about the life of soul singer James Brown.
His final acting roles were in the TV show Elementary, in which he had a recurring role from 2016-2017, and the 2017 drama film True to the Game, which was released posthumously.
Deborah Ann Woll joined the cast in season one, as Bill’s progeny, Jessica Hamby. Since then, she’s had a successful career in Hollywood, particularly in the Marvel Comics universe; she’s starred as Karen Page in Daredevil from 2015-2018, and she’s also played the character on other Marvel shows: The Defenders and The Punisher.
Arlene Fowler was probably one of the most loveable characters on the show, definitely due to Carrie Preston’s endearing portrayal of her. While filming True Blood, Preston also acted in the CBS drama, The Good Wife, until 2016, and had a recurring role in the CBS sci-fi drama, Person of Interest (which she acted alongside her real-life husband, actor Michael Emerson). Preston can currently be seen on the TNT drama, Claws (which, in the opinion of this author, is a truly great show and has similar amounts of camp and drama that True Blood had- check it out if you haven’t already!).
Kristin Bauer van Straten entertained us all as Eric’s acid-tongued progeny, Pam, and since True Blood’s end, has also been seen playing Disney villain, Maleficent, on the ABC drama, Once Upon a Time.
Chris Bauer and Jim Parrack starred on True Blood for seven seasons as Terry Bellefleur and Hoyt Fortenberry, respectively. Since then, both men have made several appearances in both television and film, but they’ve most recently appeared together again in the HBO TV drama, The Deuce.
True Blood Reunion?
The show only ended a few years ago, so there really hasn’t been much talk about a reunion, at least not yet. There were rumours about a True Blood revival a few years ago, but nothing ever came to fruition.
That being said, would you watch a True Blood reunion episode, or movie? Whose story would you like to see revisited? Let me know in the comments!
