How I Met Your Mother is a beloved CBS sitcom that ran from 2005-2014, for an impressive 9 seasons. The show follows Ted Mosby and his group of friends in New York, and features an impressive ensemble cast. Alyson Hannigan starred as the fierce and bubbly Lily Aldrin, and during the course of the show the character underwent multiple hair transformations. Let's take a look at the hair(volution) of Lily.
Season One: Choppy & Chin Length
At the beginning of the series, Lily (Alyson Hannigan) rocked a choppy, layered chin-length cut. Her hair was a bright, orangish-red that was both stunning and vibrant, and she would often play up the style by curling her tresses. Her overall style was very playful and quirky, and she would wear unique patterns and textures, often in the form of dresses and feminine blouses. The bold orange-hued hair went perfectly with her sunny personality, and Lily was never one to shy away from attention-grabbing ensembles. The chin-length cut and color complimented Lily's porcelain skin and beautiful green eyes.
Did You Know? Alyson Hannigan found great success as Willow Rosenberg on the hit show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003). Less than two years after the show's conclususion, Hannigan nabbed the role of Lily Aldrin on How I Met Your Mother.
Season 2: Side-Swept Bangs & Darker Tresses
Season 2 had Lily embracing a much darker and longer 'do, a fitting change since she had previously broken up with Marshall. She dyed her hair a deep brunette with a faint red tint, and added a heavy side-swept bang. Her tresses grew to just about her chest, and she often styled her new hair in loose waves. Lily's overall style remained quirky, but she also began rocking more edgy and sexier ensembles, including dresses, skirts and long boots. She was constantly accessorizing with statement-making earrings, necklaces and bracelets and looked absolutely stunning when she finally married Marshall at the end of the season.
Did You Know? Hannigan couldn't stand having to kiss on-screen boyfriend/husband Jason Segel (Marshall) because he was a constant smoker. According to the actress, it was like "kissing an ashtray." Though Segel did ultimately quit smoking for a year, stress caused him to smoke once more.
Season 3: Blunt, Bold Bangs
With Season 3, Lily kept her darker shade of hair but opted for a blunt, bold bang. She added light layers and often wore her tresses straight, giving off an edgier and more structured vibe. The look was mature and sophisticated, and she enjoyed playing around with unique patterns and textures in the clothes she wore. The great thing about Lily is that she was always eager to try a new hairstyle or fashion trend, and she often pulled them off effortlessly. She complimented the cut with a bit more dramatic eye makeup that really popped, and the overall style was a fabulous look for Lily.
Did You Know? Hannigan's husband Alexis Denisof (whom she met on Buffy the Vampire Slayer), played the vain news anchor Sandy Rivers for 10 episodes.
Seasons 4 & 5: Layers & Growing out Bangs
Throughout Seasons 4 & 5, Lily's hair remained somewhat the same. She began growing out her blunt bangs and wore them swept to the side, and she added a bit of a tapering effect to her cut. The color was still darker than her normal red hue, but as the two seasons progressed Lily moved more and more towards her original hair color. The chic layers and light tapering framed her face beautifully, and once her bangs grew out she wore them side swept on both sides. The simplicity of the style was very cute, and her clothing taste continued to mature and evolve.
Did You Know? Alyson Hannigan was pregnant during the filming of Season 4, and the producers used well-known TV tricks to hide her belly: big handbags, baggy sweaters and stage props. The character of Lily didn't become pregnant until the end of Season 6.
Season 6: Curly & The Return of the Red
By the sixth season, Lily ditched the darker 'do and returned to her vibrant and stunning red hue. The shade was absolutely gorgeous with her complexion, and the shoulder-length style was accentuated with loose, voluminous curls. Her tresses had lovely orange-red highlights, and her overall makeup became softer. Lily also fully embraced a mature, put together wardrobe. She would often wear structured dresses and blazers, but always kept that fun pop of color in whatever ensemble she rocked. The orangish-red hue was the first time she rocked the color since the debut season.
Did You Know? Hannigan won the People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actress in 2009 and 2012 for her role as Lily.
Season 7: Curtain Bangs & Gentle Waves
Season 7 brought forth a pregnant and excited Lily, and also a subtle change in her hairstyle. She rocked long curtain bangs that perfectly framed her face, and her color became more of a deeper red. She often wore her locks down in gentle waves, and she had a very laid-back and effortless vibe. Lily sported more muted and neutral shades of clothing and styles, but continued her reign as the accessory queen. By this season, it seems that Lily found the right balance between quirky and classy, and her style (and hair) transformation was fun for viewers to watch.
Did You Know? As a teenager, Hannigan babysat for the children of her future How I Met Your Mother costar, Bob Saget.
Seasons 8 & 9: Back to Basics with Red
For the final two seasons of the series, Lily once again embraced a more orange-hued shade of red, which went wonderfully with her longer, wavier locks. Her hair had a lot more body and volume, and the added curls and pop of vibrant color brought her character's hair evolution full circle. The bold hair color compliments her fair skin, and her soft makeup and chic style demonstrates just how much Lily has evolved over the coarse of the show. Whether she wore her tresses wavy and curled, straight and sleek or in a unique up-do, there is no denying Lily could rock any hairdo and color.
Did You Know? Lily is the only character that had an onscreen kiss scene with all of the other 4 lead characters of HIMYM.
