Rahul is a TV addict who can never get enough of good shows. His all-time favorites are 'The Wire', 'Breaking Bad', and 'The Sopranos.'

What Series Are Like Pretty Little Liars?

Where to even begin with this show? From a talented ensemble cast to intricately woven storylines, Pretty Little Liars has a lot going for it. Based on the book of the same name by Sara Shepherd, this show is full of intrigue and mystery that will keep you glued till the finale.

Now that the show has come to an end, there aren’t any more clues to decipher and hot dudes to feast your eyes upon. Fret not. I have got your fix. Being a huge fan, I decided to compile a list of TV shows like Pretty Little Liars that would keep you going.

Shows Similar to Pretty Little Liars

  1. Veronica Mars
  2. Switched At Birth
  3. The Vampire Diaries
  4. Revenge
  5. Gossip Girl
  6. Scream Queens
  7. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
  8. Hidden Palms
  9. Twin Peaks
  10. The Secret Circle
  11. The Originals
  12. Teen Wolf
  13. How To Get Away With Murder

1. Veronica Mars

The series revolves around the life of Veronica Mars, who used to be popular among friends not long ago. However, she grows apart from everyone after a series of tragic events in her life. When her father is removed as a county sheriff, she takes it upon herself to solve the unresolved mysteries of her sinister town.

The plot is not relatable as the scenarios depicted in this show have no relation to reality by a long shot. However, this outlandishness is what makes this show unique. Don’t pay attention to the negativity around it. We watch TV to escape from reality, and Veronica Mars excels at it.

2. Switched At Birth

This is the story of two teenage girls who come to know that they were accidentally switched at birth. The ensuing tale is both funny and heart-warming.

Most of the characters in the show are deaf, and they are all likable. They have their own plights, backstories, and plans for the future. Once you watch a few episodes, you will get invested in it. This show will make you laugh and cry, sometimes simultaneously. You will feel all sorts of emotions as you binge through all the five seasons.

I don’t usually watch family dramas, but this one hooked me right away. The plot is gripping, and the pacing is excellent, giving away just a little every time to keep you interested. All in all, Switched at Birth is an excellent show everyone should be watching.

3. The Vampire Dairies

Based on the series of novels by L.J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is the story of Elena, a mortal, who is torn between the rivalry of two brothers fighting for her. She falls for one of the brothers, Stefan, who also goes to the same school.

When she learns that Stefan is a vampire, things spiral out of control. To make matters worse, Damon, his vampire brother, decides that he won’t let his brother be in peace. He is still holding a century-old grudge for taking his love away.

The Vampire Diaries starts off weak with a disenchanting plot. However, you need to stick to it for at least 4-5 episodes. That‘s where the show changes gears. Once it picks up the pace, it’s a rollercoaster ride.

Although The Vampire Diaries has a pretty strong ensemble cast, Ian Somerhalder‘s performance as a cold-hearted anti-hero is head and shoulders above the rest. His character, Damon Salvatore, kills people just for fun. Despite his recklessness, you’ll still be rooting for him. He’s dangerous and unpredictable, but also charming and smooth in his own way.

With 8 seasons consisting of 171 episodes, you have at least a month’s worth content to binge upon!

4. Revenge

Revenge documents an emotionally troubled woman’s quest to destroy the lives of those who wronged her father. Why is she doing it? Who’s she? Who was her father? You’ll get all the answers in the first few seasons.

Except for a mediocre 2nd season, every other season is near perfect. You can skip that season entirely as it doesn’t have much of an impact on the overarching storyline. The show doesn’t offer much when it comes to action sequences, but its riveting storylines and dynamic characters will keep you coming back for more.

5. Gossip Girl

The story follows a couple of teenagers just after the end of high school. As everyone is looking to embark on their future endeavors, there is someone among them who isn’t ready to let go of the past, as all the secrets and scandals are still being shared.

Candidly speaking, I am not a huge fan of the books. Despite an interesting premise, the story loses its way somewhere in the middle. The characters seem one dimensional and drab.

The TV show, however, brings them to life. It’s funny to see these dumb teenagers getting themselves into precarious situations, and find their way out of it. It’s funny, suspenseful, and a little bizarre, cementing Gossip Girl's place as one of the must-watch shows like Pretty Little Liars.

6. Scream Queens

Scream Queens is one of those shows you’ll either absolutely adore or loathe with a passion. Do you love 90s slasher movies? If the answer is yes, you’re going to love what Scream Queens brings to the table.

The plot revolves around a group of college-going students who start getting killed one by one. As the mystery begins to unravel, the possibility of the killer being one of them increases.

This show is not for everyone. Some people will bash it for its strong language and gore. However, you’d do well to remember that Scream Queens isn’t meant to be taken seriously. A character, for instance, could be dying, and you’d still be laughing your guts out. This show is clearly aimed at the audience who want some light-hearted action. The silliness and hilariousness are what make it worth watching.

7. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

This is the story of Buffy, a young girl with the power to slay all kinds of demonic entities of this world. With the help of her friends, she embarks upon a quest to root out all sorts of evil.

This show is often mistaken for just another soap opera about vampires and demons. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. Sure, it’s a little cheesy in the beginning, but it’s a different show altogether once it’s past a couple of episodes. It touches upon a lot of issues such as first love, death, and life.

There is a lot to love about this show. The plotlines are daring, experimenting with a new kind of storytelling that no one else had ever attempted. With a great cast, an intriguing story and some amazing character development, this mid-season replacement show turned out to be a hit.

8. Hidden Palms

The plot follows a model teenager who moves to Palm Springs after his father’s suicide. In his quest to start afresh, he befriends some local youths. He finds out that some of them were involved in the suicide of his previous room occupant. Things take an unexpected turn when he delves deep into the mystery.

You’d really love the characters and the overarching storyline. It’s a shame that this show was canceled before its prime. Hidden Palms never got the audience it deserved. Nevertheless, you have one gem of a season to binge upon.

9. Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks is a strange little town right on the America-Canada border. When a girl is found murdered, the ensuing investigation leads to ground-breaking conclusions. The poor FBI agent, who is assigned this case, finds himself intrigued and terrified by the town’s mysteries. He keeps having vivid dreams of this murdered girl, which eventually brings him closer to a harrowing conclusion.

This series is not for everyone. Some people would appreciate it for its mystery and the way everything slowly unravels. Since there are only three seasons, you will burn through them in a jiffy.

10. The Secret Circle

When Cassie’s mother dies in a mysterious accident, she moves to live with her grandmother. Her life falls apart when she learns that she comes from a long ancestral line of witches. Now, she must fend off the dark forces with her five witch friends.

The show takes some time to find its footing. Once it gets into the groove, it never lets up. Since The Secret Circle is centered around teenagers, you’ll be forgiven for thinking that it’s a cheesy soap opera. However, the story is surprisingly mature. The young but talented cast carries a subtle plotline upon their shoulders with grace.

There is mystery, drama, romance, and a lot of action. What’s not to love about it!

11. The Originals

The plot revolves around the original family of vampires, who have come back to claim the city of New Orleans - a city they once built from the ground, and take revenge against those who’ve wronged them.

In their quest to claim back New Orleans, they come across witches, vampire hunters, werewolves, hybrids, and other unholy creatures. The end result is a mayhem and carnage, which doesn’t bode well for its citizens. But you, as a viewer, will love every moment of these reckless creatures wreaking havoc on the city. The town that once used to be peaceful becomes a war zone in no time. Will you root for these bad guys with a good heart?

What started off as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, turned into a monster (or a vampire…) of a show. The Originals offers a mature tone and a grittier storyline.

12. Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf is a supernatural drama revolving around a teen, who gets bitten by a werewolf. He becomes faster, stronger and more confident than he ever was. Things get complicated when other players come into the picture.

In a world where vampires, werewolves, hunters and various other beings are always at each other’s throats, you’re guaranteed tons of fun.

This is how is really underrated. More people need to know that it’s much more than a teenage soap opera. There is a lot to like. The plotlines, for example, are always intriguing and daring. Acting, likewise, is pretty solid. If you’re looking for a mature TV show like Pretty Little Liars, you should give Teen Wolf a go.

13. How To Get Away With Murder

The story revolves around a group of law students who find themselves involved in a murder plot. The deeper they delve into the mystery, the more they descend down the path of chaos and madness. It turns out that have conjured up more trouble than they had bargained for.

How to Get Away With Murder is a juicy murder mystery that will hook you instantly.

Five seasons have been aired up until now. At the time of writing, there is still no confirmation if it will be back for another season. While the future of this gem of a show hangs in the air, there couldn’t be a better time to catch up with everything.

Gone Girl - A Movie Like Pretty Little Liars

Even though Gone Girl is a movie, I had to include it on the list. Think of it as a bonus entry into this list.

The mystery, twists, and drama in this movie take you to someplace else for two and a half hours. It starts out as a missing person’s investigation, but turns into something more sinister and mind-bending in just a few minutes. Just when you think you’ve wrapped your head around it, it turns into something else, and then something else entirely. Gone Girl stays one step ahead throughout its run.

It feels as if you’re watching a few short movies one by one. While it can get overwhelming, everything makes sense in the end. Now, this is a season’s worth of entertainment within a few hours!

Honorable mentions

If you loved my above suggestions, check out Lying Game, Twisted, Broadchurch, Lost, The 100, and Then There Were None.
