What Shows are like The Last Kingdom?

The Last Kingdom is a British TV series adapted from various historical novels written by Bernard Cornwell. The three available seasons take source material from six different books, clearly explaining the rich content. The plot revolves around Uhtred, a young man who was supposed to be the next ruler of Bebbanburg. However, pagons attacked the kingdom and changed his fate forever. After killing his father, the Danish warlord Earl Ragnar captures Uhtred and raises him as his own son.

The most dangerous people are the ones who have nothing to lose because they’re not afraid of death. On the contrary, they almost welcome it. Everything was stripped away from young Uhtred, but life gave him a second chance before shattering it once again. Now he must avenge Ragnar and take back his homeland from a usurping uncle. The story takes him back and forth between these two distinct worlds as he attempts to overcome all obstacles. England used to be divided into seven different kingdoms, making it weak against the invaders, and Uhtred might be the one to finally unite this nation.

The action sequences are so good that you’ll cheer on as brave soldiers march into battle. The show doesn’t hesitate to kill off major characters, which makes it heart-pounding and realistic at the same time. Netflix just greenlit The Last Kingdom for a fourth season, so hurry up if you haven’t seen the earlier episodes. And while you wait for season four that will undoubtedly live up to its predecessors, here’s a list of equally competent shows like The Last Kingdom to keep you occupied.

1. Vikings

A list containing shows on Norse folklore would be incomplete without Vikings. Some people believe it’s even better than Game of Thrones, which is one of the most successful shows ever aired on TV. The show follows Ragnar Lothbrok, a humble farmer living with his wife and children. However, there’s more to him than meets the eye, as he has far greater ambitions. He wants to visit new lands and continents that no Norseman has ever dared to explore, putting him at odds with the local ruler, Earl Haraldson.

The show has already run for five seasons and, building quite an impressive fan base along the way. Talented actor Travis Fimmel portrays Ragnar, who is unquestionably one of the most interesting TV characters ever written.

It has been speculated that the lead character is an amalgamation of different Viking personalities, even though Ragnar Lothbrok was a real historical figure. However, the show is not known for historical accuracy, but rather the heart-pounding action sequences and fantastic character development. Vikings also explores religion and makes some characters question the existence of their gods. There are many people to keep track of, which can be confusing at times, but I guarantee you’ll remember all their names by the end of the first season. Vikings is not a show about good guys vs bad guys; it’s about people searching for meaning in their insignificant lives by any means necessary. You’re missing out on a great television experience if you haven’t watched it yet.

2. Marco Polo

Everybody has heard of the Italian explorer Marco Polo and his adventures to new lands. This shows dramatizes these exploits and offers some of the best action sequences in addition to the visually appealing cinematography. The adventurer embarks on a journey with his father, only to be betrayed and offered as a prisoner to Kublai Khan. He starts getting accustomed to the new lifestyle, slowly learning the ways of this unfamiliar place. The only thing wrong about this Netflix original is that it got cancelled after two seasons.

Even well-read history buffs seemed to enjoy the show, which speaks volumes about its quality. Similar to The Last Kingdom, our protagonist has a decision to make - either support his father who betrayed him or the ruthless emperor who offered him a new home. The choice will not be easy, but that’s life, right? It’s the choices we make that defines us, and ultimately shapes the direction of our lives. Watch Marco Polo and see this great adventurer explore not only the outside world but the inner workings of his mind as well.

3. Godless

This Netflix miniseries takes the concept of “powerful women” to a whole new level. Frank Griffin and his gang are trying to hunt down former member Roy Goode after he betrays them. Goode finds himself in a strange town without a single man in sight. Women have taken over as the town’s caretakers. Most men would not dare go against Frank, but these determined women have something else in mind. There’s no telling when the hunter can become the hunted in this godforsaken town, as rivals try to kill each other at every turn.

The show aptly portrays what a group of powerful women can accomplish if they come together. The antagonist is played by Jeff Daniels of Dumb and Dumber fame, but my god can he portray a dark and sinister character! This addictive series will make you want to finish one episode after another to find out what happens next. The background score is also brilliant and reminiscent of the western classics of old. So it’s safe to say that Godless is the total package.

There are only seven episodes in total, so pick a day and see how the cowboys used to settle disputes. And for people who say they don’t make westerns like they used to, give Godless a try and see if it meets your expectations.

4. The Hollow Crown

From the mind of the greatest storyteller who ever lived, The Hollow Crown is the cinematic representation of William Shakespeare’s history plays. The number of Hollywood superstars appearing on this show alone should tell you about its quality. Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, and Benedict Cumberbatch portray their respective characters very well. Although there are only two seasons available at the moment, it has not been officially cancelled, so there might be more episodes on the way.

Wars and famine were as common as road accidents in ancient times, and things have not really changed that much. People still want to kill each other over the most trivial things. The only difference is, they used to spill blood out in the open. Now, violent acts take place in relative secrecy.

Soldiers are said to be haunted by the ghosts of the people they kill, but what happens when the number of lifeless bodies seems incalculable? Unlike most shows, The Hollow Crown doesn’t have a central protagonist ASit puts equal time and effort into all its major characters. To sum it up, any story by Shakespeare is worth watching, and this one is no different.

5. Black Sails

Who doesn’t love a good story about pirates, right? Ever since all those Pirates of the Caribbean movies came out, these marine vagabonds have become mainstream. Black Sails follows Captain Flint and his crew, who have to face many obstacles, both in and out of the sea. Flint is widely known as a brilliant and dangerous pirate who will go to any lengths to ensure his people’s survival.

The show has been accused of over-dramatizing the characters, so everything happening on-screen appears flashier than usual. That’s not to say that the show doesn’t have any depth. Contrary to what its steamy scenes would have you believe, Black Sails is meaty - something you’d be chewing on for a long time.

The life of a pirate is not an easy one, but at least there’s inherent freedom in roaming the open seas. They don’t need to worry about getting oppressed by others as they don’t have to answer to anyone else. Freedom has become an overused word these days, but looking at these buccaneers, the word takes on a new significance. The first season might be a little confusing due to all the new characters being introduced, but you’ll be glued to your seats by the second one. Ride with these golden age pirates, as they give you a glimpse of their wild lifestyle.

6. Da Vinci’s Demons

There are many words to describe Leonardo Da Vinci-painter; engineer, sculptor, and inventor being the few. But let’s see what he did during his days off through Da Vinci’s Demons. The show is not historically accurate, but that doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining. In this dramatized rendition of the Italian artist’s life, we get to see a curious mind in pursuit of high-risk adventures.

After his inventions are used for killing people, Leonardo doesn’t have any choice but to deal with Florence’s problems himself. At the same time, he encounters a strange figure who promises to share secrets about his mysterious mother.

If you want to see one of the greatest minds in action, watch this marvellous show. There are three seasons available, but season one is undoubtedly the best one, and fans seem to agree.
