Netflix's K-Drama, Remarriage & Desires, is an eight-episode series starring Kim Hee-Soon, Lee Hyun Wook, Park Hoon, and Jeong Eu Gene.
This gripping drama with elements of a thriller explores themes of power, greed, money, retribution, desire, love, and coming to terms with one's fragmented past. As the series progresses, the show does an excellent job of developing its characters and creating tension.
People's willingness to go to great lengths for love and vengeance is demonstrated throughout the show—not just romantic love, but parental love too.
The show revolves around a matchmaking agency for the elite of Korea, called Rex, and the story of a woman who loses her husband to a scheming woman. The members of the Rex agency, which caters to the elite members of the Korean society, are thoroughly screened before being accepted. There are many levels of membership in this specialty pool, making it even more restricted.
Mrs. Choi is in charge, and she maintains a calm demeanor at all times. Despite the fact that she may appear to be on your side and do things subtly with a grin, she has her own agenda behind the matchmaking she does. She believes that marriage, like any other business transaction, must be carefully evaluated before making a final decision regarding a potential partner and this is something we find her communicating to her clients and staff members throughout the season.
Most powerful men in business and politics turn to Rex in their hunt for the perfect companion, and it's often their mothers who help them out. Women who are attractive, well-educated and decent families sign up with the agency to find a suited match. Paying more gives you access to the wealthiest and most successful Black members in the country.
Kim Hee-Soon as Seo Hye-seung
Hye-seung's life as a typical housewife and mother is turned upside down when her husband passes away unexpectedly. She is left with nothing. She is attempting to rebuild her life with her daughter, but she encounters the mastermind who was responsible for turning her life on its head at the upper-class marriage matchmaking organization "Rex."
Then, in order to get back at her, she joins the race to get married. Hye-seung lost her happy family in an instant, so now she has nothing to lose and nothing to be afraid of. She goes in a different direction from how she has lived her life up to this point because she is determined to get her revenge.
Lee Hyun Wook as Lee Hyung-Joo
A self-made entrepreneur, Hyung-Joo serves as chairman of his own company. Hyung-Joo, the object of everyone's desire, strives to move on from the debacle that was his first marriage by finding a suitable companion with whom to start a second. In Rex, he is a groom of the "black" (the highest) grade.
Jung Eu Gene as Jin Yoo-Hee
Yoo-Hee is a successful attorney who will stop at nothing to advance her career. Hye-Seung's ex-husband had an affair with her. At Rex, she and Hye-seung become rivals.
Cha Ji-Yeon as Choi Yoo-Sun
Rex is owned and represented by Choi Yoo-Sun. She is seen as a success in the marriage market despite her belief that marriage is a business and that material possessions bring joy. When it serves her purposes, she will exploit the needs of others.
Park Hoon as Cha Seok-Jin
Cha Seok-Jin is Choi Yoo-Sun's stepson. He and his stepmother wage an inheritance dispute over his father's vast riches. At the urging of his father, he joins Rex, where he encounters Hye-seung, his first love whom he previously broke up with. He is both a distinguished university professor and a "black" grade groom. He is willing to make any sacrifice for Hye-seung.
Remarriage & Desires had me hooked with its gripping storyline. It's amazing how the writers of the show managed to keep track of so many different plot lines without any of them getting lost.
There is vengeance, corruption, scandal, romance and many more emotions which we often get to see in the episodes. The episodes are filled with drama and tension which keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.
No matter how complicated the situation is, each character is well-developed, whether it is Seo Hye’s quest for revenge/closure while also trying to care for her teenage daughter and make ends meet, or Jin Yoo’s desire to wreck everyone in her path to success because of her troubled past.
Kim Hee-soon’s performance as Seo Hye-seung is grounded by the naturalness with which she portrays the character. There are a lot of ways to play Seo Hye-seung, a character who has been through the pits of hell more times than she cares to remember.
That being said, she is one of the few nice characters on screen, and making her performance more natural serves as a counterpoint for her opponent, Jin Yoo-hee.
Jeong Eu Gene deserves a lot of credit for playing the villain in the show. Jin Yoo-hee is a reprehensible human being. She's well aware of her nasty nature and the lengths she'll go to achieve her goals. This is demonstrated by the several cautions she issues to Hye-seung and others before unleashing her wrath.
It was also refreshing that no woman was left behind. Using my earlier explanation about how affluent people work, we see how women use their brains to manipulate the people around them in order to gain the authority they desire.
As soon as the credits roll, Remarriage & Desires has viewers eagerly pressing the "Next Episode" button. As a whole, the show is immensely entertaining. Everything speeds up to a climactic finale, so by the time viewers reach the last episode, they'll be demanding a second season.
