Realizing you need help is never easy, and that was certainly true for actor Tom Felton who is getting real about his struggle with addiction. Opening up in an interview with CBS Sunday Mornings to promote his new memoir Beyond the Wand, Felton recalled an intervention that his friends and family threw for him. And the exact moment that he knew he needed to change.
"I was furious at the time," Felton admitted in the interview, which has since been shared onto TikTok (@cbsmornings).
But now he can see that he needed the intervention that his family had planned. "The wheels needed to come off a little bit," he explained. At first Felton said he didn't really understand why his friends and family thought he had a problem, but it was something that his lawyer said to him that really struck a chord.
"He said something along the lines of, 'Tom, I think this is the twelfth intervention I've been to. And six of those are dead,'" he recalled. "Don't be the seventh. That kind of hit me."
He was still reluctant to accept that he had an issue with alcohol, until one moment where he ran away from rehab and felt things "click" while at a beach. "I needed help and I was willing to accept it," he said.
People in the comments section were applauding the Harry Potter actor for coming clean. "Love how he and Daniel Radcliffe were able to face and overcome their addictions," wrote @becksimilian. "I’m thrilled when child actors make it out the other side. It can’t be easy," @joannebx1967 added. "We love you, @Tom Felton! Addiction is a beast and I am glad you were able to slay it! Very proud of you!" @historyonmymind chimed in.
We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
