Margot Robbie Announces Her “Pirates of the Caribbean” Movie Was Canned and Fans Think It’s For the Best

Especially those Johnny Depp fans.

It feels like it's been years since we've had a Pirates of the Caribbean movie — and unfortunately it seems like we're going to have to wait even longer. This is all according to actress Margot Robbie, who recently shared that a planned Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off she was meant to star in is no longer happening. But before you start booing, take a look at the conversation on Twitter. Where some people wondered if it was all for the best.

The debate started after news of the canceled project went viral online

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Robbie explained that the project is effectively dead. "We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” she said, speaking of Disney.

Now normally we'd all be up-in-arms about this kind of decision, but the response of Twitter was actually pretty supportive of the call. "For the better," wrote one person online. "They just saved themselves from a box office bomb," @Envor16 agreed. "Good," @AsapFungaI chimed in.

Many people suspect that the project was scrapped after it was rumored that Johnny Depp will no longer be reprising the role of Jack Sparrow in the franchise. Although one Twitter user had a different explanation that actually sort of makes sense.

"I love how the replies are like ‘wouldn’t be the same without Johnny’, ‘not Pirates without Jack Sparrow’, ‘Johnny said no to it’, etc when the reason the Pirates franchise is dead is they made two films with Jack as the main focus when the trilogy had Will & Elizabeth as the focus," @NicholasJLevi pointed out.

"The reason the franchise is dead is because people for stupid reasons thought Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow was the most important thing in the franchise & people stupidly adored that over Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swan & Davy Jones like seriously what loser thinks Jack is cool?" they added in a follow up tweet.

This definitely is a pretty strong theory, but at this point we'll never know what the deal was. Sigh.
