Hilary Duff Pays Sweet Tribute to Late Ex-Boyfriend Aaron Carter

The two dated during their teens.

Actress Hilary Duff is speaking out after the tragic news that Aaron Carter has died. The now-35-year-old Duff penned a touching tribute to her ex-boyfriend on Instagram, after Carter's passing was announced online.

The shocking news started spreading around the internet on November 5. According to E! News, Carter was found dead in his home in Lancaster, California — although the cause of death has yet to be revealed.

After news of Carter's passing broke, Duff sent condolences to her former love and his family, writing on her Instagram page (@hilaryduff) that she wished Carter would "rest easy."

"For Aaron — I'm deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world," she wrote. "You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent...boy did my teenage self love you deeply," she added.

The "I Want Candy" singer and Duff famously dated each other on-and-off for three years starting in 2000. They were both 13 when their romance started and Carter even appeared on Duff's mega-hit Disney show Lizzie McGuire.

Things got a little rocky in their relationship when rumors started bubbling up that Carter was cheating on Duff with fellow teen star Lindsay Lohan.

"I was dating [Duff] for like a year and a half, and then I just got a little bored, so I went and started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay," Carter explained on an episode of The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch in 2005, E! News reports. "Then I didn't want to do that anymore, so I got back with Hilary," he added.

Carter went on to date Lohan from January 2002 to April 2003, but it seems like ultimately Carter and Duff were able to put their past behind them, even after Duff allegedly ended their relationship for good.

Carter struggled with addiction issues throughout his life, although again, no official cause of death has been declared and it's not clear if drugs was involved in his passing. But clearly he will be missed.
