The Greatest Jedi of All Time, Including the New and Old Republic

Hello everyone.

I've noticed that people often compare the Jedi to see who is the strongest.

"Its Anakin, the best swordsman of the order."

"No, Obi-Wan defeated him."

"Clearly it's Luke Skywalker."

The discussion is interminable—until now. I've put together the collection of the top 10 strongest Jedi of all time. I'll start from number 10 and work my way up to number one. Of course, I will justify my choices and tell you why I sorted them this way.

There are some Jedi here you all know as well as some who didn't appear in blockbuster movies that you may not, but I will present them all.

So, without further delay, let's see who are the greatest Jedi of all time!

Don't forget that you can discuss any of my articles live and in-person if you're following my stream!

10. Jacen Solo: The Prodigy Who Failed

Jacen Solo
Jacen Solo

Jacen Solo is the son of Han Solo and Leia. He was born in Coruscant and passed his childhood trying to avoid kidnapping and assassination attempts that targeted him because of his famous parents.

He began training in the ways of the Force at age 13 with his twin sister, Jaina Solo, on Yavin 4, taught by his uncle, Luke Skywalker. His younger brother was Anakin Solo.

Jacen was against violence and preferred not to fight in the front lines in the war against the Vongs (a race that nearly destroyed the New Republic), but he accepted to join an assassination task force led by his brother, Anakin. Unfortunately, his brother Anakin was killed in that mission, and Jacen had to step up and take leadership, vanquishing his enemies and returning in mourning.

After that incident, the Vongs managed to capture Jacen. They tortured him for a year, and he ended up slipping to the Dark Side of the Force.

Jacen eventually managed to escape his captors and slowly joined the Jedi Cause again, but he was already convinced that the ends justify the means. He then had the vision that changed his life: He saw the future and discovered that if he didn't join the Sith, he would kill his uncle, Luke Skywalker, and the galaxy would be consumed. Therefore, he took the leap.

He joined the Sith, turned on his family and friends, tortured his former Jedi apprentice, Ben Skywalker, and killed Luke Skywalker's love, Mara Jade.

Irony had it that his former best friend and training companion—his twin sister, Jaina Solo—was the Jedi who finally killed him, but only after he became a Sith Master named Darth Caedus.

Jacen's Masters

  • Jedi Master: Luke Skywalker
  • Sith Master: Lumiya

Jacen's Apprentices

  • Jedi Apprentice: Ben Skywalker
  • Sith Apprentice: Tahiri Veila

9. Ki-Adi Mundi: The General

Ki-Adi Mundi
Ki-Adi Mundi

Ki-Adi Mundi was born in Cerea and favored the independence of the world.

He was always held in high regard by the Jedi Council and was one of the only Jedi to ever sit on the Jedi Council before obtaining the rank of Jedi Master.

Mundi was also granted an exception by the Jedi Council on the personal side of his life. Even though Jedi traditionally can't get married, he was granted permission because of his species' low birth rate. He maintained a polygamous relationship with five spouses and seven children, although he tried never to bond with them.

Master Ki-Adi Mundi was a shock Jedi. He was always involved in great wars, always seen in the heat of the conflict, and always fighting in the front lines. During the Clone Wars, he fought in the front lines against countless droid armies and almost died in a lightsaber duel against General Grievous.

In the Battle of Cerea, all of his family was killed, and he grieved by becoming even more committed to the Jedi cause. He dueled the Dark Jedi Knight Asajj Ventress and led numerous assaults on various Separatist Droid Foundries.

His ability to enter huge battles on the front lines and come out unharmed, his wisdom that led the Jedi Council to allow him to sit on the Council before becoming a Master, and the fact that he was one of the only Jedi who started his training after infancy age give Mundi a rightful position on this list.

Mundi's Masters

  • An'ya Kuro
  • Yoda

Mundi's Apprentices

  • Dama Montalvo
  • Anakin Skywalker (temporarily)

8. Kit Fisto: Master of Underwater Lightsaber Fighting

Kit Fisto (the one on the right)
Kit Fisto (the one on the right)

Kit Fisto was a powerful Jedi Knight. He, like Ki-Adi Mundi, was one of the generals who led the clone army against the droid army.

Kit Fisto's most notable exploits are underwater. His underwater Lightsaber fighting prowess is extreme and a beauty to watch.

Like Ki-Adi Mundi, Fisto came across the Jedi Killer General Grievous, whom he almost killed—almost, because Grievous escaped by activating his personal security droids, which caught Fisto's apprentice, Nahdar Vebb.

And, like Ki-Adi Mundi, Festo dueled the dark Jedi assassin, Asajj Ventress.

On his last evening, the great general grabbed his lightsaber and went to meet Mace Windu. They were going to arrest Senator Palpatine—Darth Sidious. On that evening, at the hands of the Sith Master, Kit Fisto perished.

Fisto's Apprentices

  • Nahdar Vebb (graduated to Jedi Knight)

7. Plo Koon: The Hero of the Republic

Plo Koon
Plo Koon

Plo Koon was one of Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn's best friends.

Koon started his career as a Jedi Guardian. He had awesome lightsaber skills and was one of the best fighters ever. If the Jedi needed someone for a mission that required lots of lightsaber combat and a special commando able to subdue enemies with overwhelming numbers, Plo Koon was the choice.

He fought in the Stark Hyperspace Wars and was a general in the clone wars. He belonged to the Jedi Council, but did not join at the Council's first request (he refused the first request, believing that another Jedi with a stronger mind (Qui-Gon) should be the chosen).

Plo Koon and his master, Tyvokka, were awesome starfighter pilots who were chosen to do a space mission to negotiate with Stark forces during the Stark Hyperspace War. The negotiations degenerated in a great space conflict, and Tyvokka was shot down in the crossfire. When Plo Koon saw his master go down, he rallied the other fighters and led a miraculous victory against overwhelming odds. This made Plo Koon a Hero of the Republic.

Plo Koon's elite Starfighter abilities made him the ultimate Jedi General of the skies, and in the Clone Wars, he commanded in the air while Kit Fisto and Ki-Adi Mundi commanded from the ground.

When Senator Palpatine gave Order 66—for the clones to turn and kill the Jedi—Plo Koon's fighter was shot down, and the titan fell.

6. Nomi Sunrider: The Strongest Woman Jedi of All Time

Nomi Sunrider
Nomi Sunrider

She was a human female married to a Jedi Knight in training: Andur Sunrider.

While they were on a trip, they were ambushed by Bogga the Hutt's soldiers, who were after the Adegan Crystals Andur was carrying. On that day, Nomi Sunrider witnessed the assassination of her husband. After his death, she picked up his lightsaber and began her path toward becoming the strongest female Jedi ever.

Under Jedi Master Thon, she become a full-fledged Jedi Knight.

She fought in the Great Sith War against the greatest Sith of All time—Exar Kun—and his apprentice, Qel-Droma.

She watched as Qel-Droma slew his own brother, and, crying in pain, she used her immense power to sever Qel-Droma's connection with the Force. She was vital in ending the Great Sith War.

After the war, she began climbing the Jedi Ranks and became the head of all the Jedi Order. The Order was in bad shape at that time, and so, as Head Master, she set upon rebuilding it.

This was millenniums before the appearance of Anakin Skywalker, but even after her death, her legacy was preserved and kept in Jedi Books.

Nomi's Masters

  • Thon
  • Arca Jeth
  • Odan-Urr

Nomi's Apprentice

  • Vima Sunrider (Nomi's daughter)

5. Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Legend

Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi | Source

Obi-Wan Kenobi, later known as Ben Kenobi, was a legendary Jedi who shaped the galaxy with his decisions.

He was the master of both Luke Skywalker and Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker.

He was taken as an apprentice by Qui-Gon Jinn, and he became the first in 1,000 years to ever defeat a Sith Lord in one-on-one combat when he fought and defeated Darth Maul. He was also one of the last members of the High Jedi Council.

And while both Ki-Adi Mundi and Kit Fisto had close scrapes with the Jedi Killer General Grievous, Obi-Wan Kenobi dueled Grievous and killed him easily. Following Order 66, Commander Cody opened fire on him, but he survived.

After the assassination attempt, Obi-Wan went to meet his former master, Yoda and together, they realized there weren't many Jedi left. They also soon realized Anakin Skywalker had turned and become Darth Vader, a new Sith Lord. Lord Vader killed the remaining Jedi at the Jedi Temple and Obi-Wan made the decision of attacking the Dark Lord he taught himself.

After an epic battle, Kenobi proved that he was one of the strongest Jedi by again defeating a Sith Lord in combat: Darth Vader. Kenobi left him to die in a lava storm and took Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, to live with the Lars family.

After Luke grew up, the old Obi-wan started to teach him the ways of the Force because Darth Vader had survived and established a reign of terror with Palpatine.

Obi-Wan then dueled the Sith Lord Darth Vader again, but he was older and Vader was at his prime. This time, Vader defeated his master, who became one with the Force. Even after his death, Obi-Wan guided Luke to Yoda and advised him throughout his life.

4. Mace Windu: One of the Most Skilled Lightsaber Duelists in History

Mace Windu
Mace Windu

Mace Windu was Master of the Jedi Order until the time of the battle of Genosis, at which point he gave the title to Master Yoda.

Windu created the Lightsaber form Vaapad, the modern seventh form of Lightsaber combat. He was the only practitioner of this style who didn't fall to the Dark Side.

Mace Windu lead 212 Jedi to the Battle of Genosis and killed the infamous bounty hunter Jango Fett. He was a High Jedi General and considered to be the best Jedi Lightsaber wielder ever.

His saber had a purple crystal that toned his blade that particular color.

On a mission, Windu dueled Sith Lord Count Dooku and won, but Dooku managed to escape.

On his ultimate night, Mace Windu joined Kit Fisto and went to arrest Senator Palpatine. He dueled Palpatine, who was about to be defeated when Anakin Skywalker betrayed him, and the once High Master Jedi met his fate.

  • T'ra Saa
  • Yoda

Windu's Apprentices

  • Devan For'deschel
  • Depa Billaba
  • Echuu Shen-Jon

3. Revan: One of the Greatest Sith, Now One of the Greatest Jedi

He was Kreia's Padawan, recognized by the Jedi Order as their greatest champion and an amazing military strategist. He had an enormous amount of influence.

The Mandalorians call him Revan the Butcher.

Revan was once a great Sith Lord, but the Jedi Order managed to erase his memory and use him for their own cause—which shows just how much respect they had for him.

Revan found himself in love with Bastilla Shan, and together they quested for the Star Forge's Location, the place where Darth Malak, former Sith Apprentice of Revan himself and now a Sith Lord, was leading the war against the Republic. Revan invaded countless Sith Bases, killed hundred of Sith soldiers, dueled and killed dozens of Sith Apprentices and Masters and finally fought and defeated Darth Malak's apprentice, Darth Brandon.

However, Malak captured Bastilla and converted her to the Dark Side through torture. Revan pursued his love and dueled with her. Upon her defeat, Bastilla told Revan everything and asked him to turn to the Dark Side and assume his rightful position with her on his side. Raven refused and went straight to Malak.

Darth Malak had imprisoned many Jedi and stole their Force power to himself. His stolen force was boosted by the Star Forge, which in combination with dark energies made him more powerful than ever. Even so, Revan was able to defeat Malak and kill him. Bastilla came to her senses and used her battle meditation to facilitate the Republic's fleet attack on the Star Forge.

Revan was then declared Hero of The Republic and Savior of the Republic.

He then departed because he felt the menace of the true Sith approaching and he never returned.

Revan was the only figure in history that was neither Jedi nor Sith. Instead, he was just someone that always did what was right.

Revan's Masters

  • Jedi Master: Kreia
  • Sith Master: Yuthura Ban

Revan's Apprentices

  • Jedi Apprentices: Malak
  • Sith Apprentices: Darth Malak

2. Yoda: The Master Who Surpassed His Master and Was Surpassed in Turn by His Student

Yoda was the Master of the Jedi Order and the Leader of the Jedi Council for longer than everybody else. He trained almost all Jedi you can think of, and he was known by his mastery of the Force, ultimate wisdom, and prowess with a lightsaber.

Although Yoda is revered as a master of the sword, able to dominate all fighting skills, his choice was to teach the younger generations and give them the benefit of knowledge and experience. He dedicated his life to teaching.

One night, Yoda, the Grand Master of the Jedi, confronted Darth Sidious, the ultimate Sith Master. The duel was intense, and in the heat of the battle, Yoda had a vision: He was losing, and he couldn't die there because he had to train Luke. So he ran away through the service pipes and escaped on a speeder.

"Into exile I must go. Failed, I have," Master Yoda mused over his failure.

1. Luke Skywalker: No Doubt About This One

Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker

He was a Galactic Civil War Hero.

Trained by his father's Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, he quested to defeat the Empire. Like Plo Koon, he was an exceptional pilot, with the X-Wing as his bird of choice.

Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star and joined the Rebel Alliance.

Palpatine was developing a second Death Star and he was guarding it with Vader. Luke Skywalker invaded the station and was brought to the Emperor by Vader.

Palpatine watched in delight as Darth Vader and his son Luke dueled each other. Luke won, but refused to convert to the Dark Side, so Palpatine, frustrated, unleashed all of his Force Lighting on Luke. As Darth Vader watched his son in agonizing pain, he remembered himself, turned to the Light Side, and became Anakin Skywalker once again. He killed Palpatine, only to die from the effort.

Luke founded the New Jedi Order and began training Jedi again. He assumed the title of Grand Master.

Luke was labelled as an invincible presence and he could foresee the future and had abilities no other Jedi had. Eventually, he died and became one with the Force. His time of death is unknown.

Where were the Strongest Lightsaber users?

Sith or Dark Side

hudson-essex 3 years ago

they forgot that the jedi order where afraid that plo koon was going to turn to the darkside from his complete anger against the sith

Shadrosky 4 years ago

I gotta go Sith, as Palpatine seemingly had no trouble chopping down 3 Jedi Masters personally before taking on Windu solo. One also cannot ignore Darth Maul's double-bladed fury in defeating Qui-Gon Jinn, and almost taking out Kenobi as well.

CarreiraS 4 years ago

My opinion is that the Sith were the strongest. The law that there can only be two Sith at a time (Master and Pupil) are what saved the Light side.

    Jedi or Light Side

    slack3r9 3 years ago

what about anakin and exar kun?

    TanoCalvenoa 3 years ago

    The very strongest were Jedi.

    ryan-thomas 4 years ago

You will note Palpatine was defeated by Mace Windu, Darth Vader was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker, the Emperor was stalemated by Yoda [who had to leave only because he'd been fighting all day prior to his encounter with Palpatine, Kenobi was almost defeated by Darth Maul but he wasn't. The greatest swordsman in the galaxy have always been Jedi Order members.

As Yoda says when asked if the Dark Side was stronger, 'No, not stronger. Easier, yes, quicker, more seductive.'

The Jedi are and always have been the greatest in all aspects - the Sith gain ground, but just as quickly lose it due to greed and infighting.

Depends on what you mean by strongest. Best lightsaber user? Best in using the force?

Ill go on and say that anakin "could" be the strongest. Don't forget that, although he may lost from Dooku and Obi-Wan, he

1)started training at an older age than other Jedi did.

      2) being still young (in combination with 1) he only served a handful of years the jedi. Dooku had been training for more than 70 years

so he was at a disadvantage. Couple that with the fact that he lost his hand, then he lost both his legs, he got immolated and then turned into a half cyborg, cutting down his connection with the force AND his lightsaber fighting skills (well, cyborgs are clumsy) its only logical that he lost to Luke. In all 3 prequels it is stated again and again that he would be much much stronger than both Yoda and Sidius and everyone else, but ofc, they didn't foresee him burning into a lava. So yeah, technically Anakin wasn't the strongest Jedi (since he didn't reach his full potential) but he could easily be the strongest one, much stronger than anyone else.

And don't forget that it is not sane to compare part 1-3 to 4-6. Windu made short work of Sidius on part 3 but Sidious could kill Luke with ease in episode 6. On top of it, Luke had the least Jedi training from any1 else, he fucking started at the age of 16 or what? If he was a part of episodes 1-3, where training was supposed to matter at those films and made a huge difference, luke would be the errand boy.

Nomi Sunrider and Revan -- NICE! I love the comic, and Knights of the Old Republic games. They were great.

The Hero of Tython was probably the strongest jedi of all time, just because he defeated the strongest sith ever (Vitiate).

      CarreiraS profile image

      CarreiraS 22 months ago Author

The strongest Sith ever is, canonically, Palpatine.

If we weren't talking about Cannon but my opinion I would say Exar Kun.

      Not Vitiate.

I've always found old republic masters bloated. I you tea the books, sidious allowed windu to put him in that situation to sway anakin. I like jacen solo, but his brother anakin and his sis Jains were stronger than him. Mara jade should be on here. PLO koon is a joke. Same for fisto. Corran horn and tresina lobi for me

      Tyler 19 months ago

One correction: Jacen didn't necessarily slip to the dark side due to, or during, his captivity by the yuuzhan vong. That didn't happen really until after the war with the vong was over.

      Charles Dickens12 17 months ago

So Luke seems to be overated in my opinion. Darth Vader beat him and Darth Sidious beat him. I haven't seen any victories against in any of the movies against a formidable opponent. Why is he #1?

      Charles Dickents 14 months ago

How isn't Anakin on this list? Just because he turned Sith?

      James 12 months ago

Obi-Wan doesn't really belong on the list. He almost didn't even make it into the order. He was too weak. He only got in cuz he helped Qui-Gon with the defeat of Qui-Gon's former apprentice who went rogue. Plo-Koon, Kit Fisto and Ki Adi Mundi could easily be replaced with: Meetra Surik, Exar Kun, Ulic Qel-Droma and even Ood Bnar who far outlived Yoda by going into stasis.

      Doug 11 months ago

You are forgetting Anikin Solo who was stronger in the force than anyone who came before him. When he died a shock wave blasted through the force and like Alderan was felt throughout the galexy

      MannySolo 11 months ago

There is no way Luke is the greatest. Luke might be a galactic hero, but Anakin, Mace Windu and Yoda surpassed Luke in skillsets. He killed a past his prime Vader, but there is no doubt that Anakin would destroy Luke.

      Cobra Khan 8 months ago

Ok I will agree with the choice of Luke as #1 but have to question the position of Obi-Wan to 5th.

NOTE: only one jedi has ever gone from the physical to the ghost forms by a thought, that was Obi-Wan. So by mere thought he went to the spiritual realm, even Yoda dieda physical death before fading away.

So for that reason alone it shows Obi-Wan had more power in the force thzn anyone before him.
