10. Doctor Strange
As Doctor Strange appears in the Marvel movies for the first time, the movie follows a famous neurosurgeon starting with an origin story. As you may already know from the comics, Dr. Stephen Strange has become not only one of the leading surgeons in the world but also one of the most arrogant. However, his life turns upside down after a terrible car accident in which the nerves in his hands get destroyed. Thus, he is unable to perform surgery. Desperately looking for medicine, he understands a sorcerer with healing magic is his only hope. That’s when Strange acquires magical powers and becomes the most powerful sorcerer. Now he must choose whether to live his usual life, the life of fortune and status, or defend the world.
This is one of the best Marvel movies: it delivers an entertaining superhero origin story, includes kickass fight scenes with phenomenal choreography, and introduces us to many complex villains. Moreover, all fans of Benedict Cumberbatch can rejoice, as he appears on screen as Dr. Strange. He is perfect for this role, just admit it. His angular features, basso voice, and piercing ocean eyes make the character unforgettable!
9. Thor: Ragnarok
Thor: Ragnarok follows the Asgardian Avenger (also known as the God of Thunder or the Prince of Asgard) who is kicked out of his home and gets imprisoned on the other side of the universe—on a literal trash planet. His mission is to return to Asgard as soon as possible and stop Ragnarok who leads his homeworld to destruction! However, first, he must compete in gladiatorial games that pit him against his former fellow: the Hulk!
Dive into this strange cosmic journey with the Prince of Asgard, it gives you something completely different from the previous movies and shows you places and characters never seen in Marvel Cinematic Universe before. Don’t think it’s only about smashing things. The Big Green Guy is imprisoned in more ways than you may think at first sight: imprisoned by his own emotions, by his self-hatred. This movie makes us care about the Hulk! We see he also has emotions and can feel sadness, even insecurity. Thor: Ragnarok is one of the funniest movies from the Marvel series and introduces a whole lot of new characters to us!
8. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man: Homecoming returns back to the basics of the character which distinguishes him from many other Marvel superheroes. Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) is a true nerd, geek, looking like (and well, he actually is) an American high school teenager. He is attending classes, chatting with his geeky school friends and going to the nerdiest school club for little geniuses like him. He’s like anyone else. Well, at least he seems to be. Actually, he fails in his attempts to fall back into a normal daily routine. Luckily, he is under the watchful eye of Tony Stark, his mentor.
If you think you would like a high schooler's take on the MCU, you definitely should watch it. And why wouldn’t you, anyway? There are so many hilarious and emotional moments in the movie that will make you either laugh out loud or cry your heart out. Chances are, you will be in tears towards the end of the movie when you will realize the teenager has gone through so much in his life!

7. Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most fun, emotionally engaging and rewatchable Marvel movies. Instead of focusing on a How I Got This Incredible Power story, this movie is about How the Gang Got Together. That means, even though it is an origin story, it avoids many repetitive stories. It simply doesn’t need to give you explanations on how superheroes got their magical skills.
It’s a perfect standalone film that focuses on adventurer Peter Quill who steals a mysterious orb coveted by a villain threatening the entire universe. Obviously, he becomes the object for the hunt. Although Guardians of the Galaxy gives you many laughs, it also gives you a good emotional punch. If you are looking for a funny standalone Marvel movie, give it a shot!
6. Iron Man
Meet Iron Man, the movie that turned a relatively unknown hero into one of the most recognizable characters in pop culture. It is no surprise, as this story is about charming, likable Tony Stark (especially, taking into account the fact that it’s Robert Downey Jr.’s excellent, charismatic performance). Add a good number of great action sequences to it, and you have one of the very best movies in MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)! The humor flows organically out of his personality.
Talking about the story, it’s about already mentioned Tony Stark, a genius inventor and billionaire industrialist who gets trapped and forced to create a deadly weapon. However, he uses his brains to build a high-tech armor suit instead. With the help of his inventions, he escapes and vows to protect the world.
5. Captain America: Civil War
It’s hard to find a better movie than this one that perfectly balances superhero action, gut-wrenching emotional drama, and serious themes. Drama, action, humor—everything is packed into Captain America: Civil War. Here we see the political pressure installing on the team of Avengers. Politics want to oversee and direct the team, and this is what divides the squad. The Avengers divide into two camps: one with the idea of protecting humanity without the government interfering with the team’s plans, led by Steve Rogers, and the other with Tony Stark’s desire to support political oversight.
It’s heartbreaking to watch former fellows and teammates fight against one another, while it may not make you cry your eyes out, it does have a lot of character development and emotion taking into account it’s a superhero movie that mainly focuses on action. However, the movie doesn’t take anyone’s side. Iron Man isn’t shown here as the clear bad guy (as it is in the Civil War comics). So, you might think you support the team of Captain America at the beginning of the movie but end up questioning your loyalty by the end. The same can be if you support the team of Iron Man.
4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, returns to the spotlight again. The movie follows the story of a World War II hero who one day suddenly wakes up in today’s world. Well, Steve Rogers has no choice but to adjust to contemporary society. He is sent as one of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D.'s team members to free hostages aboard a vessel. Fighting off assassins sent to silence him, he dives into a web of intrigue that puts the world at risk.
Part spy thriller, part kickass action movie, part character journey, part superhero adventure film, part political intrigue, this Marvel movie is an example of the very best of what the comic book movie has to offer. If you love action, watch it immediately! This show has plenty of it. Within the first 15 minutes, you will already be on the edge of your seat, glued to the screen waiting for the next exciting scene to come.
3. Avengers: Endgame
After the devastating events of Infinity War set in motion by Thanos, the remaining Avengers hope to find a way to set things right in the universe once again. In the beginning, you feel like there’s desperation. It may feel strange as it’s not the feeling you normally get in a superhero movie. If you are a fan of this genre, you know there’s usually lots of punching even in the very beginning.
And there’s plenty of that in Avengers: Endgame, but it takes a long time purposefully: in this way, you feel like you are watching regular people, not superheroes (which is refreshing to see). The Avengers have never felt so human before. This Marvel movie has deep and rich emotions, you can’t miss it!
2. The Avengers
The Avengers is one of the biggest superhero epics the world has ever seen! It has probably the best team chemistry—it’s the superhero team of a lifetime. Can you imagine such iconic Marvel superheroes as The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Captain America and Black Widow teaming up? It’s an unexpected enemy threatening global safety who makes the Director of the espionage agency more known as S.H.I.E.L.D. to make daring recruitment to make up a team that will be able to prevent the worldwide disaster.
While keeping all the aspects of a regular Marvel superhero movie with top-notch action, over-the-top explosions and so on, it also has lots of heart and soul. Actually, there’s much more of that than in your typical comic book movie. One more beautiful thing about this movie is that you don’t have to know the backstory of every character—you know who is who from the opening sequences. That makes The Avengers a perfect standalone movie, perfect for all those who only start their journey to the Marvel movie world.
1. Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War brings all major characters together, it’s just like a comic book comes to life! Teamwork and courage are the main messages in the Avengers. Here you will meet Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow as well as a whole lot of other Marvel heroes such as Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy teaming up to defend humanity and the whole universe! Perhaps, it’s the convergence of almost everybody in MCU films, so you simply cannot miss that. The great variety of well-developed characters people have lived with for more than ten years is definitely the strength of it.
This Marvel movie centers on a new danger emerging, this time it’s Thanos. So far, he has been present only behind the screen, pulling the strings, and it’s only Infinity War that shows his true abilities. He wants to collect all Infinity Stones and use them for evil purposes. Can you imagine what a mass murder is waiting for you in this movie?
It’s the most intense Marvel movie so far, due to much scarier villains than in the previous films, and deaths of some of our most beloved characters. Although it does have a darker tone and raises some strong serious themes, it’s still fast paced and full of action, has enough humor and lighter moments to keep you entertained. Also, you should know that this is one of those Marvel movies that require more knowledge of things that have already happened in previous movies, as the characters from several franchises and storylines come together.
Kenneth Avery from Hamilton, Alabama on September 10, 2019:
Diana . . .I am a Marvels freak. I have loved this company (do not laugh) since 1966. I used to have huge boxes of their comics, but I had to turn them over to my brother-in-law to make points with his sister, who is now my wife, but I still love Marvel.
Truth be told, I MISS the Fantastic Four very much and if the production company, producer and director that gave us End Game, the FF will be popular again.
Thank you for letting me bend your ear.
