Republic Jedi in "Star Wars"

Throughout the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Episodes 1-3, Jedi are prominent throughout the galaxy, serving as the guardians of peace and justice. These movies reveal much about their ranking and training systems, including their Jedi Council, the most senior members who govern the Order's direction.

Normally composed of 12 masters, these are some of the most powerful Jedi we've seen—which reign supreme? These are the ten strongest Jedi Council members throughout the prequel films! Spoilers ahead.

Ki-Adi-Mundi

Ki-Adi-Mundi

10. Ki-Adi-Mundi

Lightsaber Form: 4 (Ataru)

Master Mundi's Cerean species have two brains, granting him incredible insight and logic, especially when combined with his Force prowess. Wise as Mundi is, his saber skills also deserve mention, with only Yoda known to surpass him in Form 4.

Mundi is also one of the most featured Council members in the prequels, being the only Master with spoken dialogue beyond Yoda and Mace Windu, and the main protagonists.

Eeth Koth

Eeth Koth

9. Eeth Koth

Lightsaber Form: Unknown

Despite very little screentime, Eeth Koth proves one of the Council's strongest members, able to competently duel General Grievous even after being shot. This is partially thanks to his Crucitorn power, a rare Force ability that helps its user drastically decreases the effects of pain.

Koth was also one of few Jedi to survive Order 66. When he was tracked down years later by Darth Vader, he put up a valiant fight, only losing after Vader distracts him by threatening his daughter.

Shaak Ti

Shaak Ti

8. Shaak Ti

Lightsaber Form: 2 (Makashi)

Shaak Ti is a versatile warrior proficient with both the Makashi and Ataru saber styles, and like Eeth Koth, she survives the Jedi Purge. She also has a tremendous bond with nature, able to use the Plant Surge ability to control nearby fauna—even commanding a Sarlaac.

Shaak Ti was also renowned for her diplomacy, healing prowess, and cunning, marking her mastery in multiple Jedi skills.

Plo Koon

Plo Koon

7. Plo Koon

Lightsaber Form: 5 (Shien)

Plo Koon is the Jedi responsible for finding Ahsoka Tano, and despite Anakin mentoring her, Koon and Tano maintain a close bond. Especially calm, even by Jedi Master standards, almost nothing phases the Kel Dor warrior, and he excels as a pilot, likely the Order's third best (behind Anakin and Saesee Tiin).

A quintessential Jedi Guardian, Plo Koon's skills were praised by Darth Maul, and he was proficient with the Electric Judgment ability, essentially the light side version of Force Lightning. Plo managed to fend of Asajj Ventress despite a broken arm, and perhaps most notably, he's one of few Jedi to have ever bested Yoda in a lightsaber duel.

Yaddle

Yaddle

6. Yaddle

Lightsaber Form: Unknown

One of few known female members of Yoda's species, Yaddle is best known for her Force mastery. She's one of few allowed to use the often-forbidden Morichro technique, slowing down another's body functions with the Force (to the point of death if not careful). Yaddle can also speak to others telepathically, and wields an even rarer power than Morichro: Force Light, which reduces the dark side's presence is other people or places.

Yaddle's fate is uncertain in canon, but in the legends timeline, she sacrifices herself to save Anakin and the city of Naatan.

Jedi Master Dooku

Jedi Master Dooku

5. Count Dooku

Lightsaber Form: 2 (Makashi)

Trained by Master Yoda himself, Master Dooku was a refined political idealist. Like Anaking, Dooku held several atypical Jedi beliefs, including a passion for technology and desire for involvement in government. His disillusion with the Senate eventually led him to leave the Order, ultimately being recruited as a Sith by Darth Sidious.

Still, whether gauged as Jedi or Sith, Dooku is one of the strongest characters in the series. Said to rival Mace Windu and wielding a uniquely-curved lightsaber hilt, Dooku was trained by both Yoda and Sidious, the two strongest characters of the prequels.

Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker

4. Anakin Skywalker

Lightsaber Form: 5 (Djem So)

Anakin's inclusion here is a technicality, as he never earned the Jedi Master rank normally needed for the Council, instead being appointed by Chancellor Palpatine. Still, however briefly, he does in fact join the Council, and his power is incredible considering his youth—in terms of raw potential, today's strongest character.

At only 22, Anakin was able to overpower Dooku, Asajj Ventress, and many others, though after his fall to the dark side, he would forever be imprisoned in black armor as Darth Vader.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan Kenobi

3. Obi-Wan Kenobi

Lightsaber Form: 3 (Soresu)

One of the Council's youngest members, Obi-Wan's known for his calm mind and diplomatic skills, but he's a cunning warrior when the need arises. Utilizing a defensive style, Obi-Wan has beaten foes like Darth Maul, General Grievous, and a fallen Anakin.

He also survives the Jedi Purge, resigning to watch over young Luke until the time comes to train him as a Jedi and topple the Sith's new empire.

Mace Windu

Mace Windu

2. Mace Windu

Lightsaber Form: 7 (Vaapad)

Mace Windu's distinctive purple blade sets him apart from other Jedi almost as much as his unique saber style. Vaapad channels emotion, requiring incredible skill to use without succumbing to dark temptation. Using it, Mace even outmatched Darth Sidious, (though many believe the Sith threw the fight).

Mace also mastered the rare Shatterpoint power, letting him instantly find exploit the weak points in structures or even people.

Grand Master Yoda

Grand Master Yoda

1. Yoda

Lightsaber Form: 4 (Ataru)

Grand Master Yoda has the highest position among the Council, and for good reason—he's trained Jedi for nearly 900 years, and is almost twice as old as Yaddle. Favoring the agility of Form 4, Yoda's skills intimidate even the Sith, with Dooku fleeing from their battle and Sidious attempting to.

Yoda's many years of study provide several rare Force powers, and (with help from Qui-Gon's spirit), he becomes the first Jedi to fully retain consciousness and form after death.

Other Council Members in Star Wars

Today, we examined the Council's top masters from the prequel era, but other Jedi leaders deserve mention. Many generations before Episodes 1-3, leaders like Satele Shan and Biel Ductavis guided the Council.

In the legends timeline, Luke and Leia form their own Jedi Council, having successfully rebuilt and improved upon the Jedi Order. But for now, vote for your favorite council member and I'll see you at our next Star Wars countdown!
