What Films Are Like Baywatch?
When it comes to action-comedy films, no one does it better than Hollywood. We've seen more than a fair share of great films in this genre over the years. Some do find them to be cliched and the plots to be wafer thin. Well, that hasn't deterred filmmakers from churning out more of the same. One of the most popular releases in this genre in recent times is Baywatch.
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, and Priyanka Chopra among others, the film is a walking, talking example of glamour. While it was collectively slammed by the critics, it found its way into the hearts of the masses, mostly due to the Baywatch nostalgia.
If it hadn't been for Pamela Anderson, we wouldn't have seen PeeCee playing a drug kingpin today. Granted, it's not the best when it comes to storyline, but who's watching this movie for that reason?
So, if you're looking for all-out fun films like Baywatch where you get to ogle at some attractive people on screen, I got you covered.
Films Like Baywatch
- Hot Pursuit
- The Lifeguard
- The Do-Over
- Dirty Grandpa
- Central Intelligence
- 21 Jump Street
- Charlie's Angels
- Staten Island Summer
1. Hot Pursuit
In Baywatch, you got to appreciate the rock hard abs of Dwayne and Zac. In Hot Pursuit, you will get to feast your eyes on the fine looking Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon. Sofia plays a Mexican witness who has dirt on a big drug cartel. Witherspoon plays an upstanding, amateur cop who's only mission is to uphold law and order. The two go on a crazy road trip as the cop tries to protect her witness and produce her before the court. Of course, their journey is filled with danger, with bad guys around every corner, looking to cover their tracks.
Obviously, the plot is not novel, but it's still an entertaining watch. Let Sofia charm you as she smolders the screen with her mere presence and her exotic accent. Reese, on the other hand, looks vanilla compared to her compadre but, she's still a sight for sore eyes.
So if you wanna watch a buddy cop movie with an all-female lead cast, then this should be your pick. The recurring theme of drugs and mafia - a prominent theme in this flick, makes it a movie like Baywatch.
2. The Lifeguard
Baywatch gained popularity for its tantalizing scenes with girls in swimsuits running in extra slow motion. If you're looking for a similar oomph factor, The Lifeguard, starring Kristen Bell, is the film for you. It's an added bonus if you're a fan of this Hollywood diva, for she features in her hottest on-screen avatar.
Kristen plays Leigh, a lifeguard working at a local pool. Other than saving the occasional lives, she falls for a guy named Jason, who is much younger than her. An intense affair follows with an obvious conclusion, for a passion this blazing doesn't last long.
However, the focus is truly not on the relationship, but on Bell herself. I would, in fact, say that The Lifeguard was made with the sole intention of worshipping Kristen and her gorgeousness. And well, there's plenty of her in this flick in various states of undress, so there's nothing to complain.
Even if you have never heard about her before, you will become a bona fide fan after you watch this flick.
3. The Do-Over
When you have Adam Sandler in the lead, you can definitely expect some wholesome silliness. Face it; he's great at it, and there's plenty of goofiness to go around in The Do-Over. Plus, when you have David Spade as a co-star, you know that the shenanigans these two get into will be epic. It's an action comedy/ buddy movie with the classic plot of mistaken identities.
Adam plays Max, an FBI agent, who meets his childhood friend Charlie, played by Spade. The two head out to party in a yacht, which Max knowingly blows up, and the two fake their deaths. Unhappy with their previous lives, they take up new aliases of Butch and Ronald respectively.
But, their bad luck continues to follow them, as it turns out that there are two men with the exact same name who are wanted by some very bad people. As the duo lands in an even bigger mess than they got out of, a lot of crazy, hilarious moments unfold.
It's illogical, predictable, and downright bonkers, but it's a fun ride from start to finish. You may feel that your intelligence is being insulted, but you can't help but guffaw at the never-ending goofiness. I admit, its a guilty pleasure, but so is almost every film on this list.
4. Dirty Grandpa
I never thought that I would see the legendary Robert De Niro as a horny grandpa lusting after women who are his daughter's age. For better or for worse, that's exactly what Dirty Grandpa is all about.
Zac Efron plays a troubled young man who's all set to marry his girlfriend. On the insistence of his grandfather, Dick (played by De Niro), the two head out on a road trip to Florida. Here, they meet two women, Shadia, whom Zac realises he's falling for, and her best friend, Lenore. Grandpa has his eyes set on Lenore and openly lusts after the sultry woman.
With De Niro at the helm combined with Zac's charm, the film is a must watch. Trust me, you would have never seen De Niro like this, and although you may cringe internally, you can't help but be amused by his antics. Zac too brings a lot of spunk in his role and contributes to some major comedic moments in the film.
Bikini-clad women, tropical weather, and two men bonding over an unusual experience; you can already see the similarities with Baywatch.
A more PG-13 version of Baywatch, Vacation finds its similarities with the Dwayne Johnson starrer, thanks to its style of comedy.
A barely functioning family decides to go on a road trip across the United States. Rusty, played by Ed Helms, is the head of the family and plays a disgruntled husband and father. With the family bonds straining, this trip is possibly the last opportunity for the four to bond. Unfortunately, things don't go according to plan as they get robbed, injured, and nearly killed. As crazy as it all sounds, it looks pretty hilarious and lighthearted when it plays out on the screen.
Rusty's frustration as he tries to keep it all together is super relatable. Ed Helms has pulled off this act before in The Hangover, where he marshaled his drunk friends after a wild night in Vegas. After that famous comedy flick, it seems like Ed has found his groove in this niche.
Also, Chris Hemsworth makes an appearance, so what's not to like? Those looking for an eccentric movie like Baywatch will not be disappointed.
6. Central Intelligence
Dwayne Johnson makes the list once again, but this time he's paired up with Kevin Hart. This comedy duo is really popular and has featured in many films, one of them being Central Intelligence. Though not exactly a buddy cop movie, the film does follow the template of one.
Dwayne plays Bob, a secret agent and a childhood friend of Calvin, played by Kevin. Calvin is bored with his life and often wonders where did he go wrong. Little does he know that Bob is about to take him on the most insane journey of his life.
With police and secret service hot on his tail, Bob uses Calvin as cover and repeatedly escapes capture. The reluctant Calvin has been roped into the whole mess, thanks to his childhood friend and tries his best to get away but to no avail. Kevin's outrage is a direct contrast to Dwayne's calm, sunny demeanor, making the film hilarious in many places.
The action is aplenty and well choreographed, with Kevin screaming for his life in almost all of it. It's flashy, fun, and slick in parts.
7. 21 Jump Street
Another cop movie that takes us into the world of drugs is 21 Jump Street. What really works for this film is the pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, making a very unlikely team. Since its a combination no one has ever seen before, it keeps things interesting.
Schmidt and Jenko are two cops with shady pasts who have been assigned an undercover drug bust operation. Under new aliases, the two infiltrate a high school to throw a wrench in the whole drug operation. Unfortunately, the cops get their hands dirty in the process, leading to some pretty comedic situations.
Like Central Intelligence, there's a major difference between the two characters. Schmidt (Jonah) is sharp and witty, whereas Jenko (Channing) is dashing, but a little slow when it comes to using brains. This odd duo lands themselves in a lot of trouble, keeping the audience hooked. The recurring drug themes and the bromance makes it quite similar to a movie like Baywatch.
8. Charlie’s Angels
Tired of seeing men in cliched action films? Well, Charlie's Angels should make you happy, for its an all women cast! Three super spies, known as Charlie's Angels, embark on deadly missions to save the world. They dance, they sing, they romance, and they beat the hell out of bad guys, making them a complete package. There's something oddly satisfying about watching attractive women in combat. They nimbly take down their enemies, with a few swear words thrown in between.
Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore play the three super spies, who are on a mission to grasp some crucial data. If this data falls in the wrong hands, the consequences will be catastrophic. But when you have such charming ladies on screen, the plot takes the backseat.
On top of all the crazy shenanigans, there's a cameo from Joey aka Matt LeBlanc, so you will also get some serious F.R.I.E.N.D.S nostalgia.
Another film quite similar to 21 Jump Street is Chips, or CHiPs as it is officially spelled. It's a story of two cops belonging to California Highway Patrol and the crazy adventures they go through together.
John Baker is a regular highway cop, who takes down heists and goes after traffic violators. He gets a new partner in the form of Ponch, played by Michael Pena. As the two go about their duties, it becomes clear that there's more to Ponch than meets the eye. Turns out, he's an undercover FBI agent who infiltrated the highway patrol for a mysterious reason. Will his new partner land John in a mountain of trouble? Watch the film to find out.
CHiPs has action, drama, the overdone rookie-cop-meets-secret-agent storyline, and Michael Pena's hilarious improv comedy. The film is as cliched as it gets, and yet, you can't help but be amused by the antics of the two. Definitely, the type of film you can check out while eating pizza and lounging around the house on a Sunday.
10. Staten Island Summer
The comedic elements may not be that great in Staten Island Summer, but the uncanny similarity with Baywatch warrants the film's presence in this list. A group of four friends works as lifeguards at a club in Staten Island. They usually keep to themselves and stay out of getting into trouble with their manager. It's a soulful story about a bunch of young boys trying to figure out their lives.
While the lifeguard theme has been established, Staten Island Summer also has a hot babe in the mix. The boys encounter Krystal, the most attractive girl in the whole town, and they're blown away by her beauty, of course. It has a Baywatch hangover all over it. However, the final few minutes of the film is pretty extraordinary, featuring a huge party. This portion redeems the mediocrity of the film. Overall, it's a decent, one-time watch.
