How Romantic Was That? Review of "Love, Simon"

I was so excited to go see this movie! I read the book first (Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda) and thought it was very well done. Although all my reviews will be on how romantic or unromantic a movie or book is, I do want to say that in this movie adaptation I was impressed by the author's ability to write a well rounded story, not just focusing on the romance alone. 'Love, Simon' had other relationships that were just as important. The relationship between Simon and his friends, his parents and his siblings weren't just 'subplots' running in the background of the romantic plot, they were real plot points in the story and I think that is one of the reasons this novel and movie were so great.

The teen nervousness surrounding finding someone special online, and all that goes along with it, was very believable in this movie. I felt myself get nervous for Simon! He had a big secret that he wasn't quite ready to reveal, that he's gay, and he fell in love with 'Blue', who was in his school but neither of them knew each other's identities. This movie was overall about the vulnerability of revealing who you really are to the world, to your family and to your friends.

"Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it's a little more complicated: he's yet to tell his family or friends he's gay and he doesn't actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he's fallen for online...LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love."

The Romantic Meter

Simon and the mysterious 'Blue' had a cute-romantic connection, mostly via their online interaction. There was some drama too, but mostly I found the romantic element in this movie sweet, the sharing and opening up via email, the excitement of getting a notification on the phone of a new email reply, etc. That is why I'm giving it an 8 / 10 rating on the Romantic Meter. For a teen movie, this was definitely a good level of romance which made you root for Simon and his new found love, while also nervous that it will be ruined before it can really get started.

If you're looking for a first-time-love kind of story (actually, I would almost call it a "strong crush" or "infatuation") you won't be disappointed with 'Love, Simon.'

I also recommend the novel it was adapted from, 'Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda' by Becky Albertalli, which was a GREAT read for those who like romance and young love.

I give this an 8 / 10 on the Romantic Meter

"A seemingly ordinary coming-of-age tale that looms large because of its inclusive romantic embrace, Love, Simon wins you over by capturing your heart without pushing too hard for the prize."

— Peter Travers with The Rolling Stone

How Romantic Was That?

This is my first time writing for the site! I will be reviewing movies and books on their level of romance, based on the chemistry between the characters, the relatability of the story and the sexual content. More sexual content does not mean a higher Romance Rating, and neither does a movie entirely about romance.

If romance is the only thing that interests you when you see a movie or read a book then you're just like me! And I hope my reviews will be helpful to you. ^_^

Thanks for reading!

Thanks! Me too, my number one question before seeing a movie is, will there be romance? If not then I'll probably be too bored. It gives me something to look forward to.
