Do You Need to Watch the Dragonheart Movies in Order?

If you're interested in the series' history, then yes, you should watch them in chronological order. However, if you're just looking to enjoy some good fantasy films regardless of context, then you can watch them in any order.

The first movie is definitely the most iconic and well-known, so that's a good place to start. But, if you want to jump right into the action, then Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse is your best bet. Ultimately, it's up to you. You can't go wrong with any of the Dragonheart movies.

Dragonheart Chronologically

  1. Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse (2015)
  2. Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire (2017)
  3. Dragonheart: Vengeance (2020)
  4. Dragonheart (1996)
  5. Dragonheart: A New Beginning (2000)

1. Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse (2015)

Although this is the third production film, this is the first prequel to the original story. Essentially it follows Drago ’s (Ben Kingsley) origin story and how he became the dragon that would save Bowen (Dennis Quaid) in the first movie.

He meets a young sorcerer (Julian Morris) who he saves from being executed. They then go on an adventure to stop another evil sorcerer who is terrorizing the land.

2. Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire (2017)

The second prequel to the original film that comes after The Sorcerer's Curse in chronological order. Here Drago meets a brother and sister with dragon-like powers who are after the throne of their grandfather. While this is happening, a new danger aims to take Drago's power origin.

3. Dragonheart: Vengeance (2020)

The third and final prequel to the original story. This one is set after Battle for the Heartfire and follows Lukas (Jack Kane), a young farmer who's family is killed by savage raiders in the countryside. He sets out on an epic quest for revenge, forming an unlikely trio with a majestic dragon and Darius (Joey Batey), a swashbuckling, sword-fighting mercenary.

4. Dragonheart (1996)

This is where it all started (at least production-wise). The original movie focuses on Bowen, a young boy who witnesses his father being killed by a dragon. It's a classic story of good vs evil, with Drago being the last of his kind and Bowen being a knight who's lost his faith in God. He then devotes his life to becoming a knight and slaying dragons.

He meets Drago, the last of the dragons, who is seeking revenge for the death of his own mate. The two bond and hatch a plan to take down the king who wronged them both (thinking back I think it made me cry when I first watched this). Beautiful movie.

5. Dragonheart: A New Beginning (2000)

A sequel to the original movie, this one follows Draco ’s son, Drake (Robbie Benson), as he befriends a young boy named Jeremy (Edward Theuns) who dreams of becoming a knight.

However, when they meet up with Draco, they find out that he's been captured by an evil lord who wants to use his power for himself. They then set out on a quest to rescue him and restore justice to the land.

Will There Be a Dragonheart 6?

At this point, it's unknown if there will be a Dragonheart 6. However, given the popularity of the series, it's definitely possible that we'll see another movie in the future.

Only time will tell, but for now, fans can enjoy the five amazing movies that are already available. Personally, I really hope so.
