1. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

  • Directed by: Satyen Bose
  • Starring: Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Ashok Kumar, Snoop Kumar
  • Runtime: 173 mins
  • The romantic comedy category may have officially made its way into Indian cinema through this film. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi is the story of three brothers who keep trying to avoid women at all costs. Played by the real-life brother trio, Ashok, Anoop, and Kishore Kumar come together to bring one of the most classic Hindi comedy movies of all-time.

The songs are also great, and the fun never stops throughout.

2. Half Ticket (1962)

  • Directed by: Kalidas
  • Starring: Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Pran
  • Runtime: 168 mins
  • If you're not easily swayed by just any comedy, think again with this one. You'll be swept off your feet after watching Half Ticket. In fact, calling this one hell of a fantastic movie would be an understatement. Watch for the best, very notable scene from this classic Bollywood movie featuring Kishore Kumar's father being called to the board of director's house for a dinner party. This movie is a must-watch right now.

3. Padosan (1968)

  • Directed by: Jyoti Swaroop
  • Starring: Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Kishore Kumar, Mehmood
  • Runtime: 157 mins
  • This light-hearted classic Hindi comedy movie is a must-watch. The story revolves around Bhola (Sunil Dutt) and his lady love Bindu (Saira Banu). It's one of the best Bollywood movies, filled with great performances and songs—namely Vidyapathi (Kishore Kumar)'s performance and the famous song, Meri Pyaari Bindu. I particularly adore Mahmood's role as a Tamilian. Many people have disregarded this movie because they believe it shows a Tamilian in bad taste. However I am Tamilian, and I didn't find that this movie mocked the South Indian culture at all. The key is to take in the movie in the right spirit.

4. Bombay to Goa (1972)

  • Directed by: S. Ramanathan
  • Starring: Mehmood, Aruna Irani, Amitabh Bachchan
  • Runtime: 132 mins
  • This is a remake of the Tamil movie, Madras to Pondicherry. Excellent music and funny scenes are strewn across the movie. The funny Tamil boy Amma Pakoda's act is an over-the-top comedy scene. I had such a great time watching this. Hop on to the exciting journey from Bombay to Goa!

5. Chupke Chupke (1975)

  • Directed by: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
  • Starring: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Om Prakash, Asrani, Lily Chakraborty, Usha Kiran, David Abraham Cheulkar
  • Runtime: 127 mins
  • This movie is Dharmendra at its best. Chupke Chupke, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee is a classic comedy movie. Each and every character is written excellently—watching it just once won't satisfy you. If you haven't watched this yet, then you're missing out on something very special. I have stopped counting how much times I have seen this one.

6. Chhoti Si Baat (1975)

  • Directed by: Basu Chatterjee
  • Starring: Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha, Ashok Kumar, Asrani
  • Runtime: 123 mins
  • A romantic comedy movie that showcases Amol Palekar in a unique role. Chhoti Si Baat is the story of a young, shy person (who's not suave at all) wanting to impress a girl with his simple methods. Despite his best efforts, he goes unnoticed. So he then seeks out the help of a retired general who has his own techniques and understands the psychology of girls. Whether he'll (Arun, played by Amol) get his love or not forms the rest of the film.

7. Gol Maal (1979)

  • Directed by: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
  • Starring: Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt, Bindiya Goswami
  • Runtime: 144 mins
  • Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar) is a recent college graduate desperately looking for a high-paying job. In turn, he pays a visit to Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), the man of traditional values and believes that men who are mustache-less and who play sports lack maturity and character. Ram makes sure that he follows these requirements. The movie revolves around the confusion that happens when Bhavani Shankar sees him Ram Prasad moustache-less in a hockey match. This is an all-time great for Utpal Dutt's work—a real masterpiece.

8. Chashme Buddoor (1981)

  • Directed by: Sai Paranjape
  • Starring: Farooq Shaikh, Deepti Naval, Saeed Jaffrey
  • Runtime: 145 mins
  • This is a romantic comedy movie with effortless comedic performances by Farooq Shaikh and company. The first part of the story is about Siddharth (Farooq Shaikh), who is extremely studious, falling in love with Neha (Deepti Naval), while Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jomo (Ravi Baswani) are just interested in chasing girls. The second part is the attempt to stage the fake kidnapping of Neha, which turns into a real kidnapping by a dreaded gang.

9. Satte Pe Satta (1982)

  • Directed by: Raj N. Sippy
  • Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Ranjeeta Kaur
  • Runtime: 160 mins
  • Satte Pe Satta is the story of seven brothers living in a farmhouse. This movie contains many hilarious scenes, unforgettable music, and a great script. The video below here shows the funniest scene of the movie where Amitabh Bachchan is down few pegs and then the trademark dialogue "Daru Peene Se Liver Kharab Hota hai" occurs.

10. Angoor (1982)

  • Directed by: Gulzar
  • Starring: Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Deven Verma
  • Runtime: 141 mins
  • This is based on Shakespeare's play "The Comedy of Errors" and, oh, you won't stop laughing. Angoor is the story of two pairs of identical twins and the confusion all around. One pair is played by Sanjeev Kumar (both characters named Ashok) and the other pair by Deven Verma (both characters named Bahadur). Funny down to the last minute. With more than enough reasons to do a remake; Shahrukh Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, and Kareena will feature in the remake for Sanjeev Kapoor, Deven Verma, and Moushumi Chatterjee, respectively.

11. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)

  • Directed by: Kundan Shah
  • Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Bhakti Barve
  • Runtime: 132 mins
  • Kundan Shah received the Indira Gandhi award for best first film by a director. This classic is one of the most high-valued comedy movie ever made. Much has been said about this movie everywhere: from TV news to leading dailies, and even now the movie is talked about in television debates. Ravi Baswani was awarded the Filmfare award for best comedian of the year. If you'd like to learn more about the movie, you can purchase the book this movie was based on, by author Jai Arjun Singh.

best-comedy-hindi-movies-of-all-time
  • Directed by: Basu Chatterjee
  • Starring: Anil Kapoor, Amrita Singh, Amjad Khan, Pankaj Kapur, Ram Sethi
  • Runtime: 150 mins
  • The story, adapted from a novel by O.P Sharma, is a film of a different kind. There are several famous characters from the movie, including Anil Kapoor as Charandas, Amrita Singh as Chameli, Amjad Khan as the advocate Harish, Om Prakash as Ustad Mastram Pahelwan, and Pankaj Kapoor as Kallumal 'Koylewalla,' Chameli's father.

  • Keep silent! Simply put, this is the best silent comedy movie you'll ever watch. Check it out immediately to see why.

Video: Watch a Scene from Pushpak

14. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)

  • Directed by: Rajkumar Santoshi
  • Starring: Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon
  • Runtime: 160 mins
  • For some reason, this movie was a dud at the box office, but that didn't stop this from being one of the best movies to watch repeatedly. The song "Ye Raat Aur Ye Doori" is also a fun romantic number. The movie is filled with laughs and unforgettable dialogue. Also, we may see a remake of this with the original lead actors.

15. Coolie No 1. (1995)

  • Directed by: David Dhawan
  • Starring: Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, Harish
  • Runtime: 143 mins
  • Hoshiyar Chand (Kader Khan) claims to be the most intelligent man and wants both his daughters to be married into the wealthiest family. Shadiram Gharjode (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) is insulted by Hoshiyar Chand and in return, he decides to teach him a lesson. He ropes in Raju (Govinda), a Coolie at the local bus stop, to make him out to be a rich person to Hoshiyar Chand. Raju marries Malathi (Karishma Kapoor) and takes her to Mumbai. Mama (Shakti Kapoor) then accompanies Malathi to Mumbai. The subsequent revelation, all the many twists and turns, and a hilarious climax make this a great story with some hilarious scenes, to say the least.

16. Judaai (1997)

  • Directed by: Raj Kanwar
  • Starring: Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Urmila Matondkar
  • Runtime: 167 mins
  • Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, Kader Khan, and Upasna Singh's fine performances are reason enough to include this movie on this list. This was also the last movie in which Sridevi acted as the lead actress. There are also several unforgettably funny scenes in this movie, including Johnny Lever seeing the Abba-Dabba-Jabba girl for the first time, Paresh Rawal's interruption, Johnny Lever enacting his father's death, and the subsequent scene at the doorstep.

17. Deewana Mastana (1997)

best-comedy-hindi-movies-of-all-time
  • Directed by: David Dhawan
  • Starring: Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Juhi Chawla
  • Runtime: 160 mins
  • Remember Pappu Pager; Bunnu, the baby step guy, and Gafoor Bhai. While we've all seen the plot of two guys in love with the same girl (Juhi Chawla) being played out before, it's the comedic treatment that the actors give their roles what makes this movie shine.

Video: Watch a Scene from Deewana Mastaana

18. Dulhe Raja (1998)

  • Directed by: Harmesh Malhotra
  • Starring: Govinda, Raveena Tandon, Kadar Khan, Johnny Lever, Prem Chopra, Asrani, and Mohnish Behl
  • Runtime: 155 mins
  • This has become a benchmark for movies in this genre. This is one movie which is shown many times on the TV, and boy, it is one heck of a movie. Full timepass and paisa vasool. Kadar Khan at the receiving end from Govinda. Many great comedy sequences that will leave you in a state of continuous laughter.

19. Hera Pheri (2000)

  • Directed by: Priyadarshan
  • Starring: Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Tabu
  • Runtime: 145 mins
  • Hera Pheri needs no introduction, though it is a remake of a Malayalam movie. To call this one a rib-tickling and hilarious film would be an understatement. Fun down to the last millisecond.

20. Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001)

  • Directed by: E. Nivas
  • Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Sonali Bendre, Fardeen Khan, Twinkle Khanna
  • Runtime: 141 mins
  • This movie brought together many unrelated actors (those who'd never done films together before). The sheer comedy gold that comes across in the writing and the dialogues makes this a great spectacle. Every character has its own problem, which they want to get rid of by fair or unfair means. They choose the middle path but somehow fall prey to circumstances. Watch more to find out what happens in this hilarious film.

21. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003)

best-comedy-hindi-movies-of-all-time
  • Directed by: Rajkumar Hirani
  • Starring: Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi
  • Runtime: 156 mins
  • This one was a surprise comedy movie—it was not initially marketed as a comedy, but then received huge publicity by word-of-mouth. Most were not expecting Sanjay Dutt to do comedy, but it's pulled off. There's also a great camaraderie between Munna and Circuit, which makes it all the more beautiful. This duo is only second to Jai-Veeru.

22. No Entry (2005)

  • Directed by: Anees Bazmee

  • Runtime: 158 mins
  • This is as funny as it gets. No Entry is one of those movies you'll watch repeatedly. It's a must-have for your collection. The trio Anil Kapoor, Fardeen, and Salman are coming back with a sequel known as No Entry Mein Entry. Expect more laughs, then, as well.

23. GolMaal Series - 2006, 2008, 2010, 2017

The poster for the 1st in the series.

The poster for the 1st in the series.

  • Directed by: Rohit Shetty
  • Starring: varies depending on movie
  • Runtime: varies depending on movie
  • This is a must-see comedy movie series. Golmaal (2006) started it all, and now there are three in the series with a possible fourth in the making. From the first movie, this hilarious series has only grown in every aspect, from budget to cast. All four movies are good, but the first one is better than the rest so if you can only pick one, watch the first. The latest Golmaal Again installment is also superhit.

24. The Angrez (2006)

  • Directed by: Kuntaa Nikkil
  • Starring: Kuntaa Nikkil, Mast Ali, Aziz Naser, Soumya Bollapragada
  • Runtime: 110 mins
  • Even if this seems foreign to you, watch this if you haven't seen it yet. This is a Hyderabadi Hindi movie, and it is an excellent one. Angrez has a unique record of having sold out shows in a single theater for over 25 weeks in Hyderabad. This movie is the second of a series, the other two being Hyderabadi Nawab and Hungama in Dubai.

25. Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

  • Directed by: Rajkumar Hirani
  • Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan
  • Runtime: 144 mins
  • Sanjay Dutt has done it again with this one. The story so well-written that it'll have the audience in awe of the simple and wonderful screenplay. The movie is about Munna, who is completely mad about the voice of a radio jockey, Jhanvi, and his effort to impress her in a contest about on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Munna goes to learn more about Gandhi, and hilarity ensues.

26. Dhamaal (2007)

  • Directed by: Indra Kumar
  • Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi
  • Runtime: 136 mins
  • This is a remake at its best. Dhamaal's roots are from the Hollywood comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World released in 1963. It grossed close to 50 crore rupees and also got positive reviews across various media houses. Watch the funny scene below where Vijay Raaz tries to explain how an airplane should be landed and you'll want to watch more immediately.

29. 3 Idiots (2009)

  • Directed by: Rajkumar Hirani
  • Starring: Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Mona Singh
  • Runtime: 170 mins
  • This is a film that uses comedy to get a great message across. Every scene is better than the previous one, you'll just have to watch to find out what that looks like. There are many comedy sequences already right from the first second, but the Chatur's speech is the best.

Video: Watch a Scene from 3 Idiots

30. All the Best (2009)

  • Directed by: Rohit Shetty
  • Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Fardeen Khan
  • Runtime: 144 minutes
  • This is an easy-to-digest, very obvious-hilarious type of movie. Don't think too much and relish in all the unexpected twists and turns when you watch this one. All the actors have done complete justice to the script. Sanjay Dutt even got the IIFA award for the best comic role.

31. Queen (2014)

  • Directed by: Vikas Bahl
  • Starring: Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao, Lisa Haydon
  • Runtime: 146 mins
  • The movie that has its heart and mind at the right place. I hope you didn't miss this one on the big screen. Kangana Ranaut makes her most memorable performance with Rajkumar Rao, standing out in the role of a lover turned foe turned lover. Rani is all set for marriage until it gets called off at the very last minute by Vijay. Rani's dream of going to Paris on honeymoon is foiled. Then, with a lot of cajoling and inner strength to let go of what happened, she decides to go on her honeymoon all by herself. Watch the movie to follow her experience yourself.

32. Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015)

best-comedy-hindi-movies-of-all-time
  • Directed by: Abbas Mustan
  • Starring: Kapil Sharma, Varun Sharma, Arbaaz Khan, Manjari Fadnis, Eli Avram and others
  • Runtime: 133 mins
  • Kapil Sharma has become one of the most sought-after faces in Bollywood today. After his comedy show took off it was the right time that he tried his luck in movies. And this doesn't disappoint when it comes to comedy movies which have dried up in the last few years. The storyline is somewhat unique though not totally. Here we have one man who marries thrice in most trying circumstances and also has a girlfriend who he loves. Everybody agrees that comedy and Kapil go hand in hand, and this is a good watch. And I also like the song Samandar Main Kinara Tu!!!

I Hope You Enjoyed My List of Classic Bollywood Comedies!

Overall a great article. I liked the way you have ordered the movie, by there year of release.

However found few movies like Dhol, No entry, Deewana Mastana, Judai and coolie number one, irrelevant in the list.

Instead of these you could have mentioned Khatta Meetha (Rakesh Roshan, Ashok Kumar), Baaton Baaton Mein (Amol Palekar) Khoobsurat (Rekha), Haseena Man Jayegi (Govinda) and Dulhe Raja.

@cinemafan I know there are many other regional movies which are good, but this list was of Hindi movies.

Would love to read your list, if you don't mind sharing it.

cinemafan from India on March 29, 2012:

I dont think there are more than 10 films in this list that are worth mentioning as comedies. And your statement that these are the 25 best comedies in the country is ridiculous. There are comedies made in regional languages that are far better than crap like Andaz Apna Apna and Golmaal (the new one, I mean). Barring Munnabhai, most of the comedies in Hindi cinema during the 80s and 90s are cheap and offensive.

munna bhai mbbs and no entry missing

salman on March 21, 2012:

Angrez !! All time best movie, LMAO!!

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on March 09, 2012:

@Neelesh That's a movie I had a great laugh watching it, I'm a great fan of Amol as well as Utpal Dutt. You did not saw my top 100 list, haven't you?

Neelesh on March 09, 2012:

I don't see a movie appear in most of the lists...perhaps overlooked or forgotten...Amol Palekar's natural comedy, 'Choti si Baat'... I manage to smile and laugh at instances every time I see it...

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on March 01, 2012:

@Suman Das That's a great suggestion.

Suman Das on March 01, 2012:

I think Dhamal is the best.why no entry is not there???

nitin on February 29, 2012:

arunii from Delhi on December 25, 2011:

Judaai and All the Best should not be in the top 20 movies

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on December 24, 2011:

@mohammad Great suggestion will see if I can do this. Anyway it's cool to receive your comment.

mohammad on December 24, 2011:

it is better to make a list of 100 top comedy movies not 20

Sunny dhabale on December 23, 2011:

Why does 3 idiot not on the list

rehan on December 04, 2011:

i think all the best is the best!

Sanjay Thakor on November 17, 2011:

I am not agree for these list becauge there not naram garam and ek soti si baat

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on September 20, 2011:

@Vinaya Ghimire We agree to disagree.

They can't be compared from the older ones but people are liking it and that is more than a reason for the producers to dish another sequel.

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on September 20, 2011:

Don't you think 50% is not that bad. You may not agree, but the recent Golmal phenomena is the shit I have even seen in Hindi cinema.

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on September 20, 2011:

@Vinaya Ghimire Dude then you are missing on some of the best movies. Take time to watch those and have a good time.

And I'm out to order Naram Garam.

Utpal Dutt is one of the unsung comedians of all time.

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on September 20, 2011:

I have watched 10 movies out of twenty on the list. Gol Maal (1979) is my best on the list. But as far as I can remember Naram Garam is my all time favorite comedy movie. I can't remember the year but Utpal Dutt is on the lead.

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on September 20, 2011:

@yogi Nice to know your favorite movie. It is one of the movies that can be watched again and again.

I'm eagerly waiting for the the sequel and hope Salman-Aamir come back and give a deja vu feeling for us viewers in a new way.

Thanks for your comment Yogi.

yogi on September 20, 2011:

Andaz Apna Apna is no doubt the best

Aarav (author) from Mumbai on September 17, 2011:
