Are you looking for the best Hindi comedy movies?

After a long day at work, there's nothing better than unwinding and de-stressing with a good comedy movie. Or, watch any one of the movies below this weekend and enjoy several. Either way, if you're looking for a list of ways to spend a good two hours laughing, look no further.

Comedy movies are a great mood-lifter. Below, find a list of 30 awesome Hindi comedy movies ever made in the history of Indian cinema, Bollywood. The collection is sorted by the year in which they were released, accompanied by clips and links to the full-length version of the movie. Enjoy!

1. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

  • Directed by: Satyen Bose
  • Starring: Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Ashok Kumar, Snoop Kumar
  • Runtime: 173 mins
  • The romantic comedy category may have officially made its way into Indian cinema through this film. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi is the story of three brothers who keep trying to avoid women at all costs. Played by the real life brother trio, Ashok, Anoop, and Kishore Kumar come together to bring one of the most classic Hindi comedy movies of all-time.

The songs are also great, and the fun never stops throughout.

2. Half Ticket (1962)

  • Directed by: Kalidas
  • Starring: Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Pran
  • Runtime: 168 mins
  • If you're not easily swayed by just any comedy, think again with this one. You'll be swept off your feet after watching Half Ticket. In fact, calling this one hell of a fantastic movie would be an understatement. Watch for the best, very notable scene from this movie featuring Kishore Kumar's father being called to the the board of director's house for dinner party. This movie is a must-watch right now.

3. Padosan (1968)

  • Directed by: Jyoti Swaroop
  • Starring: Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Kishore Kumar, Mehmood
  • Runtime: 157 mins
  • This light-hearted comedy movie is a must-watch. The story revolves around Bhola (Sunil Dutt) and his lady love Bindu (Saira Banu). It's one of the best Bollywood movies, filled with great performances and songs—namely Vidyapathi (Kishore Kumar)'s performance and the famous song, Meri Pyaari Bindu. I particularly adore Mahmood's role of a Tamilian. Many people have disregarded this movie, because they believe it shows a Tamilian in bad taste. However I am Tamilian, and I didn't find that this movie mocked the South Indian culture at all. The key is to take in the movie in the right spirit.

4. Bombay to Goa (1972)

  • Directed by: S. Ramanathan
  • Starring: Mehmood, Aruna Irani, Amitabh Bachchan
  • Runtime: 132 mins
  • This is a remake of the Tamil movie, Madras to Pondicherry. Excellent music and funny scenes are strewn across the movie. The funny Tamil boy Amma Pakoda's act is an over-the-top comedy scene. I had such a great time watching this. Hop on to the exciting journey from Bombay to Goa!

5. Chupke Chupke (1975)

  • Directed by: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
  • Starring: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Om Prakash, Asrani, Lily Chakraborty, Usha Kiran, David Abraham Cheulkar
  • Runtime: 127 mins
  • This movie is Dharmendra at its best. Chupke Chupke, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee is a classic comedy movie. Each and every character is written excellently—watching it just once won't satisfy you. If you haven't watched this yet, then you're missing out on something very special. I have stopped counting how much times I have seen this one.

6. Chhoti Si Baat (1975)

  • Directed by: Basu Chatterjee
  • Starring: Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha, Ashok Kumar, Asrani
  • Runtime: 123 mins
  • A romantic comedy movie that showcases Amol Palekar in a unique role. Chhoti Si Baat is the story of a young, shy person (who's not suave at all) wanting to impress a girl with his simple methods. Despite his best efforts, he goes unnoticed. So he then seeks out the help of a retired general who has his own techniques and understands the psychology of girls. Whether he'll (Arun, played by Amol) get his love or not forms the rest of the film.

7. Gol Maal (1979)

  • Directed by: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
  • Starring: Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt, Bindiya Goswami
  • Runtime: 144 mins
  • Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar) is a recent college graduate desperately looking for a high-paying job. In turn, he pays a visit to Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), the man of traditional values and believes that men who are mustache-less and who play sports lack maturity and character. Ram makes sure that he follows these requirements. The movie revolves around the confusion that happens when Bhavani Shankar sees him Ram Prasad moustache-less in a hockey match. This is an all-time great for Utpal Dutt's work—a real masterpiece.

8. Chashme Buddoor (1981)

  • Directed by: Sai Paranjape
  • Starring: Farooq Shaikh, Deepti Naval, Saeed Jaffrey
  • Runtime: 145 mins
  • This is a romantic comedy movie with effortless comedic performances by Farooq Shaikh and company. The first part of the story is about Siddharth (Farooq Shaikh), who is extremely studious, falling in love with Neha (Deepti Naval), while Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jomo (Ravi Baswani) are just interested in chasing girls. The second part is the attempt to stage the fake kidnapping of Neha, which turns into a real kidnapping by a dreaded gang.

9. Satte Pe Satta (1982)

  • Directed by: Raj N. Sippy
  • Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Ranjeeta Kaur
  • Runtime: 160 mins
  • Satte Pe Satta is the story of seven brothers living in a farmhouse. This movie contains many hilarious scenes, unforgettable music, and a great script. The video below here shows the funniest scene of the movie where Amitabh Bachchan is down few pegs and then the trademark dialogue "Daru peene se Liver Kharab hota hai" occurs.

10. Angoor (1982)

  • Directed by: Gulzar
  • Starring: Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Deven Verma
  • Runtime: 141 mins
  • This is based on Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors and, oh, you won't stop laughing. Angoor is the story of two pairs of identical twins and the confusion all around. One pair is played by Sanjeev Kumar (both characters named Ashok) and the other pair by Deven Verma (both characters named Bahadur). Funny down to the last minute. With more than enough reasons to do a remake; Shahrukh Khan, Tusshar Kapoorm, and Kareena will feature in the remake for Sanjeev Kapoor, Deven Verma, and Moshmi Chatterjee, respectively.

15. Coolie No 1. (1991)

  • Directed by: David Dhawan

He ropes in Raju (Govinda), a Coolie at the local bus stop, to make him out to be a rich person to Hoshiyar Chand. Raju marries Malathi (Karishma Kapoor) and takes her to Mumbai. 16. Judaai (1997)

  • Directed by: Raj Kanwar
  • Starring: Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Urmila Matondkar
  • Runtime: 167 mins
  • Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, Kader Khan, and Upasna Singh's fine performances are reason enough to include this movie on this list. This was also the last movie in which Sridevi acted as the lead actress. There are also several unforgettably funny scenes in this movie, including: Johnny Lever seeing the Abba-Dabba-Jabba girl for the first time, Paresh Rawal's interruption, Johnny Lever enacting his father's death, and the subsequent scene at the doorstep.

Video: Watch a Scene from Judaai

17. Deewana Mastana (1997)

  • Directed by: David Dhawan
  • Starring: Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Juhi Chawla
  • Runtime: 160 mins
  • Remember Pappu Pager; Bunnu, the baby step guy, and Gafoor bhai. While we've all seen the plot of two guys in love with the same girl (Juhi Chawla) being played out before, it's the comedic treatment that the actors give their roles what makes this movie shine.

18. Hera Pheri (2000)

  • Directed by: Priyadarshan
  • Starring: Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Tabu
  • Runtime: 145 mins

  • Directed by: E. Nivas
  • Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Sonali Bendre, Fardeen Khan, Twinkle Khanna
  • Runtime: 141 mins
  • This movie brought together many unrelated actors (those who'd never done films together before). The sheer comedy gold that comes across in the writing and the dialogues makes this a great spectacle. Every character has its own problem, which they want to get rid of by fair or unfair means. They choose the middle path but somehow fall prey to circumstances. Watch more to find out what happens in this hilarious film.

  • Directed by: Rajkumar Hirani
  • Starring: Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi
  • Runtime: 156 mins
  • This one was a surprise comedy movie—it was not initially marketed as a comedy, but then received huge publicity by word-of-mouth. Most were not expecting Sanjay Dutt to do comedy, but it's pulled off. There's also a great camaraderie between Munna and Circuit, which makes it all the more beautiful. This duo is only second to Jai-Veeru.

  • Directed by: Rohit Shetty
  • Starring: varies depending on movie
  • Runtime: varies depending on movie
  • This is a must-see comedy movie series. Golmaal (2006) started it all, and now there are three in the series with a possible fourth in the making. From the first movie, this hilarious series has only grown in every aspect, from budget to cast. All three movies are good, but the first one is better than the rest so if you can only pick one, watch the first.

23. The Angrez (2006)

  • Starring: Kuntaa Nikkil, Mast Ali, Aziz Naser, Soumya Bollapragada

  • Even if this seems foreign to you, watch this if you haven't seen it yet. This is a Hyderabadi Hindi movie, and it is an excellent one. Angrez has a unique record of having sold out shows in a single theater for over 25 weeks in Hyderabad. This movie is the second of a series, the other two being Hyderabadi Nawab and Hungama in Dubai.

25. Dhamaal (2007)

  • Directed by: Rajkumar Hirani

Video: Watch a Scene from 3 Idiots

29. All the Best (2009)

  • Directed by: Rohit Shetty
  • Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Fardeen Khan
  • Runtime: 144 minutes
  • This is an easy-to-digest, very obvious-hilarious type of movie. Don't think too much and relish in all the unexpected twists and turns when you watch this one. All the actors have done complete justice to the script. Sanjay Dutt even got the IIFA award for the best comic role.

30. Queen (2014)

  • Directed by: Vikas Bahl
  • Starring: Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao, Lisa Haydon
  • Runtime: 146 mins

Rani is all set for marriage, until it gets called off at the very last minute by Vijay. Rani's dream of going to Paris on honeymoon is foiled. Then, with lot of cajoling and inner strength to let go of what happened, she decides to go on her honeymoon all by herself. Watch the movie to follow her experience yourself.

Overall a great article. I liked the way you have ordered the movie, by there year of release.

However found few movies like Dhol, No entry, Deewana Mastana, Judai and coolie number one, irrelevant in the list.

Instead of these you could have mentioned Khatta Meetha (Rakesh Roshan, Ashok Kumar), Baaton Baaton Mein (Amol Palekar) Khoobsurat (Rekha), Haseena Man Jayegi (Govinda) and Dulhe Raja.

I dont think there are more than 10 films in this list that are worth mentioning as comedies. And your statement that these are the 25 best comedies in the country is ridiculous. There are comedies made in regional languages that are far better than crap like Andaz Apna Apna and Golmaal (the new one, I mean). Barring Munnabhai, most of the comedies in Hindi cinema during the 80s and 90s are cheap and offensive.

@Vinaya Ghimire Dude then you are missing on some of the best movies. Take time to watch those and have a good time.

And I'm out to order Naram Garam.

Utpal Dutt is one of the unsung comedians of all time.

I have watched 10 movies out of twenty on the list. Gol Maal (1979) is my best on the list. But as far as I can remember Naram Garam is my all time favorite comedy movie. I can't remember the year but Utpal Dutt is on the lead.

@yogi Nice to know your favorite movie. It is one of the movies that can be watched again and again.

I'm eagerly waiting for the the sequel and hope Salman-Aamir come back and give a deja vu feeling for us viewers in a new way.

      Thanks for your comment Yogi.
