A Star Is Born (2018) Movie Review
With tears flowing down my face, I was absolutely speechless as the credits rolled. What I had just seen was so honest, so beautiful, and yet so heartbreaking all at the same time. It didn't try to copy, remake, or one-up the three previous A Star is Born films but rather created its own story and stood its own ground.
The 2018 A Star is Born follows Jack, an accomplished singer who's had a rough life. He's an alcoholic and pill popper, his mental and physical health slowly degrading as he struggles to find a reason to keep going. One night, he meets Ally, a shy girl in her 30s who loves to write songs but doesn't perform outside of the drag bar where she works. Jack immediately falls in love with her voice. After being invited to his next show, she finds herself onstage in front of millions of screaming fans, discovering her voice for the first time. What happens from there is a masterpiece that you need to experience for yourself.
If anything was proven in this film, it's how talented Bradley Cooper is. He starred, sang, played guitar, played piano, co-wrote the screenplay, produced, and directed the film. He obviously cared deeply about this film and it paid off. His hard work and dedication deserves every ounce of praise the world can muster. As his character Jack says in the film, "Everybody in this bar is talented in one way or 'nother. Having something to say and a way to say it is a whole different bag." Cooper helped deliver one mighty powerful message through this film, one I certainly won't be forgetting anytime soon.
Now, I can rave about Bradley all day long but there's another star in this film that deserves high praise and that's none other than Lady Gaga. Her powerful vocals and intense songs was absolutely haunting. The songs are so deep and cut straight to the bone. She had a hand in writing all the ones she sang, which goes to show just how incredible her mind really is. Unlike some singers who are good at one thing but not very good at acting, Lady Gaga surpasses all expectations and delivers one of the best performances of the year.
The story was probably the most surprising of all. I did not expect the turns the film made, nor did I expect the shattering ending. I can honestly say that the film stayed true to life, true to the sad reality of stardom. Because I don't want to spoil anything, I'm going to write a second article going in-depth about the thought-provoking ending so keep an eye out for that.
In conclusion, go see this film. If you have even an ounce of heart in your body, you will be so moved and humbled by the time the credits roll. It's fantastic, moving, and certainly tearjerking. I give the film a 4 out of 4.
