Who Would Make a Good Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Luke is an appraiser in Texas and has been playing video games and reading comic books since childhood. He's a bearded family man in plaid.

Wolverine has been one of my absolute favorite fictional characters since I was seven. He's tough as nails, fearless, and practically immortal. His mutant healing powers, unbreakable skeleton, and razor-sharp claws are the epitome of cool. When the first X-Men movie was first announced, I was so excited to see my favorite hero on the big screen.

The original actor that was cast was Dougray Scott, but shooting on the movie Mission: Impossible 2 went longer than expected. I was already hesitant about Scott's version of Logan, and now they had replaced him with some fairly unknown actor, an Australian theater actor and now famous Hugh Jackman. My only exposure to Jackman was him in the musical Oklahoma! and it was not reassuring. But after seeing Hugh with the classic sideburns and claws, all my doubts had been quieted. He has played the iconic hero nine times and after completing Logan in 2017, Hugh Jackman has been adamant (hehe) about not reprising his role as the feral Canadian mutant in future films.

While Hugh will always be Wolverine in my heart, who could be a good replacement?

It doesn't take much to picture him as the X-Man Logan

Oscar Isaac

Oscar Isaac is a great actor who has played such a wide assortment of roles. He's been in Star Wars as the charismatic Poe Dameron, the eccentric genius Nathan in Ex Machina (2014), and the award winning role of the titular character in Inside LLewyn Davis.

  • He has the acting chops for the complicated role of angry loner with a heart-of-gold Logan. I can already imagine his face going into a beserker rage.
  • He's handsome and can grow a legit beard.

He's ready to fight.

Sam Worthington

Sam Worthington is probably best known for his role in James Cameron's film Avatar, but I really enjoyed his role in Terminator: Salvation. He plays Marcus, a bad-ass convicted and executed killer who came back as a hybrid Terminator. He played Perseus in the Clash of the Titans, an incredible demigod warrior .

  • He's got a great, angry face that's perfect for Wolverine.
  • He's played very physical roles like Perseus and Jake Sully.
  • Experience of being in an over-the-top science fiction movie.

Ewan McGregor

I'm just a fan of Ewan McGregor. I've been keeping up with this guy ever since he played Obi Wan Kenobi in the Prequels. He can scruff it up and is an incredible actor. He can also sing and dance like Hugh, so he's got versatility.

He's voiced Logan in an animated version, but he's got the look for sure.

Milo Ventimiglia

While he's been quoted saying that he doesn't think he'd want to take on the role of Wolverine, he sure does have the look. He's previously voiced Logan in a Wolverine anime in 2010-2011 and did a great job. He's also played a mutant-esque character in NBC's Heroes. He's a great actor and I think he'd be a great fit for Wolverine.

Emile Hirsch

This one is kind of a deep pull. Emile Hirsch is such an incredible, watchable actor and my first real exposure to his prowess was in 2007's Into the Wild. He played real life Christopher McCandless, a modern vagabond who wanted to connect back to nature. I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it, but it's definitely worth a watch. His incredible range as an actor and intense demeanor could be a great combination for Wolverine.

Daphne Keen

If you haven't seen Logan, stop reading this right now and go watch it. I'll let you borrow my copy.
The young Ms. Keen was extraordinary as Laura, or X-23, in 2017's Logan. She displayed innocence and brutality in such an elegant way that she almost steals the spotlight from Hugh Jackman. In the more recent comics after Wolverine dies, Laura took on the mantle of Wolverine. So there's already a precedent for Wolverine to be portrayed by a young woman. It would make some fans angry, but it would also be a great opportunity to put some diversity into the character.

Some Other Nominees

There are many more ways to portray Wolverine. They could an Asian actor to portray his long lost son Daken, who is of Japanese decent and is always up to no good in the comics. The could cast a much older actor to keep the Old Man Logan motif alive. What do you think?
