The Start of American Reality TV
Reality television has taken over the airways and it is here to stay. Many audience members' first experience with reality TV came way back in 1992 when Mary-Ellis Bunim brought us The Real World on MTV.
The first season of the hit MTV show brought the "real life" trials and tribulations of seven young New Yorkers into our living rooms. From there, the concept took off, and the next season had us off to Los Angeles with nine other young adults.
The Real World was actually inspired by a 1973 documentary on PBS called An American Family. The innovative PBS documentary chronicled the lives of the Loud Family, and it created quite a spark of controversy when cameras kept rolling for Mr. and Mrs. Loud's separation and subsequent divorce.
These days a separation and divorce probably wouldn't make front-page news. An American Family has been mostly forgotten, and The Real World is credited as being the show that started the whole reality TV trend.
The world lost Mary-Ellis Bunim to breast cancer in 2004, but her groundbreaking MTV show is still going strong nearly 20 years later, and America is in love with the genre she helped create.
Reality TV shows have made stars out of some of the cast members. Some reality TV stars have left a positive mark on the world, such as The Real World San Francisco cast member Pedro Zamora.
However, other cast members have left a nasty taste in our mouths, and they have made themselves infamous for their ability to irritate, aggravate, and generally annoy the heck out of us.
David “Puck” Rainey
The cast members of The Real World: San Francisco (1994) were forced to endure life with David “Puck” Rainey.
Puck was childish, selfish, disgusting, and most shockingly, cruel to Pedro, the frail and exceedingly lovable cast member who was terminally ill with AIDS.
During their first meeting with Puck, the cast members learned that he was recently arrested.
His ill-mannered behavior progresses as he and another cast member, Rachel Campos, tell homophobic jokes around Pedro, dismisses Pedro’s work for the cause of AIDS, and is generally nasty to the terminally ill young man and everyone else in the house.
Eventually, the housemates agree to evict Puck and the house becomes 85% stress-free.

However, the season 4 series finale shows him leaving harassing messages on the housemates’ answering machine.
Loud, rude, and constantly running her mouth is an accurate depiction of Tamar Braxton. She is the little sister of R&B superstar Toni Braxton and she is exceedingly jealous of her sister’s success.
Tamar is the youngest of the Braxton sisters, whose show Braxton Family Values aired 2011-2020 on We TV.
She is highly opinionated, she wields her opinions like an oppressive hammer, and she absolutely never shuts up about the way she feels about anything and everything.
She spends her wealthy husband’s money like a complete idiot, and even a blind person can see that she married him only for his money.
She is such a needy, attention-sucking vacuum that when Toni announced that she was sick with a potentially life-threatening disease (Lupus), the end result was Toni actually soothing Tamar.
Natalie Nunn garners the crown for the baddest of the bad girls from Oxygen TVs Bad Girls Club: Season 4 (2009).
Like most of the other horrible excuses for people on this list, Natalie is loud, crude and opinionated, and she often resorts to physical violence to get her point across—and she always thinks has a “point,” no matter how immature and pointless the topic may be.
It appears to many that this young woman has absolutely no redeeming value.
Tiffany “New York” Pollard
Most people remember Tiffany Pollard by her alter ego “New York” from Flavor of Love: Seasons 1 & 2 (2006), and I Love New York (2007).
New York was annoying mostly because of her pathetic obsession with Flava Flav, it was just sick. She acted as if she needed some sort of Flava Flav Twelve-Step program.
Then there was her attitude—she had an undeserved ego that was bigger than the city for which her moniker represents.
New York even came packaged with the most annoying and embarrassing mother of all time, but at least it was evident how the abrasive young woman learned to be the loud-mouthed wench that she was.
NeNe Leakes and Kim Zolciak (Their Relationship)
These two women separately are not too terribly annoying—maybe NeNe is a bit more annoying than Kim, but it is their relationship that is the true annoyance.
During the first season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta (2008-present), the pair were inseparable, but with the help of cast members Sheree Whitfield and Lisa Wu-Hartwell, (oh yes, faithful RHOA fans since day one all know that it was Lisa who was the “quiet” back-stabber who started it all… ) their friendship began to crumble.
Since season one, the relationship between NeNe and Kim has become highly volatile. NeNe is clearly jealous of Kim’s “singing career” (which is a real laugh because Kim sounds like a loud chicken on crack), and she constantly throws hurtful insults at Kim.
Kim plays the fool role and continually tries to reconcile with NeNe, and her effort always ends in total disappointment and even physical confrontation. When will Kim ever learn?
If there is to be another season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, hopefully these two will stay clear of each other. But then again, what kind of entertainment would a peaceful reality TV show provide?

@prospectboy - yeah, it's pretty clear that Tamar is jealous and selfish, she seems to get worse as time goes by and she realizes she will NEVER achieve the fame her sister had in her hey days..

This is a really good list. Puck, Tamar, and New York are the only three that I'm pretty familiar with, but I've heard of all the others as well, which is saying a lot because I don't watch Bad Girls Club or RHOA.
I'll never forget when Puck spit in David's face on the Battle of the Sexes challenge on MTV in the early 2000s. He was definitely something else. Tamar is definitely annoying, and as you mentioned, it's clear that she is jealous of her sister.
New York and her mom were both crazy. I don't believe for a second that any of those guys from her reality show were really interested in her, and I honestly can't blame them. I'd run from someone like her. I've heard about the others through various sites.
Anyway, great list you compiled here. I think almost every reality show has a few cast members that grind peoples' gears a bit lol. Nice hub again! Voted up!

Wow, you did find some really annoying reality stars. Puck was supposed to make an appearance at my college way back in the day, and he showed up for a bit, but then ran off for a day of drinking at the bars in Baltimore. We never saw him again. I can't believe MTV thought they could send him out to do appearances and it would go well. Great hub and voted up!

Great hub Rochelle! The only reality show I watch now is the Real Housewives of NJ but it is getting so out of hand I am not going to watch it anymore. Very hip, timely hub!

Rachelle, your review of these "characters," is the real reason I can't watch this type of Television. But you really reviewed them well. Voted up, awesome.

Thanks Alecia. I think the world in general has heaved a heavy sigh of relief because New York seems to have crawled back under the rock from whence she came...

Great list, but can I add Spencer and Heidi to the list? They irritate me to no end. I agree that Tamar and Nene and Kim's constant fighting get on my nerves. And I was super-glad when New York went back into oblivion. Great Hub! Voted up!
