Meryl Streep has been called the greatest actress of her generation. You may know all about her acting career, but what do you know about Meryl Sreep's children? Well, if you're like most people, you probably don't know anything about Meryl Streep's kids, because she and her husband, Don Gummer, aren't the typical attention-seeking celebrity couple.
A common question some people probably wonder is "When your mother is Meryl Streep, what kind of spoiled, entitled life must you have?" Well, reportedly all of Meryl Streep's children turned out to be some of the least pretentious celebrity kids around. It's no wonder the level-headed, intelligent actress and her like-minded husband would turn out such decent kids.
The two Yale graduates married each other on September 3, 1978. If you aren't familiar with history of the love affair between Gummer and Streep, you should check out the article The Love Life of Meryl Streep. Their marriage produced four children, and here is your chance to get to know a little bit more about Meryl Streep's children.
Meryl Streep's Only Son
Henry Wolfe Gummer was born on November 13th, 1979, in New York City. He initially attempted to pursue an acting career, enrolling in the Tisch School of Performing Arts at NYU, but that didn't suit him well, so he dropped out to pursue a career in music.
He then co-founded the New York indie pop band Bravo Silva. In an interview, Henry eluded to the fact that he did not want to gain success off of his mother's fame, and he wished that people would stop inserting her work into his music. The band eventually dissolved.
In 2007, Henry relocated from New York to Los Angeles and he continued his music career as a solo artist, focusing on American classics from the 40s and 50s. He released several albums under his own record label, Undermountain. Some of his material has been featured in films, and his full-length debut album, Linda Vista, was positively received by music industry critics.
Circling back to his initial career attempt as an actor, Henry Wolfe has appeared in eight projects as an actor, his music was featured on four different soundtracks, and he is listed as a composer on two projects.
Like Mother, Like Daughter
Mary Willa "Mamie" Gummer is Meryl Streep and Don Gummer's second-born child. She came into the world on August 3, 1983, in New York, New York. Mamie is the child Meryl was pregnant with when she accepted her Best Actress Oscar for Sophie's Choice (1982) in 1983.
Like her mother, Mamie chose to pursue a career as an actress. She was formally trained in theater and communications at Northwestern University, and she graduated in 2005. She has had a successful acting career, first appearing alongside her mother and Jack Nicholson in the film Heartburn (1986). After she took time to attend college, Mamie returned to acting in 2003 and she has been working steadily every since.
In 2009, Mamie Gummer married actor/comedian Benjamin Walker at her parent's home in Connecticut. The guest list included Claire Danes, Laura Linney, and Tracey Ullman. Her two sisters, Grace Gummer and Louisa Gummer, were her bridesmaids. The couple divorced in 2013, and she remarried to writer/producer Mehar Sethi in 2019; the couple gave birth to their son in February 2019. Mamie and Mehar's child is Meryl Streep's only grandchild to date.
Yet Another Child Follows in Her Mother's Footsteps
Grace Jane Gummer is Meryl and Don's third child, she was born on May 9th, 1986, in New York City. Like her mother and older sister, Mamie, Grace is also an actress. Also like her mother, Grace graduated from Vassar College where she received a dual degree in Art History and Italian in 2008. Meryl was pregnant with Grace when she appeared on-screen with Grace's sister in the film Hearburn.
Grace appeared on screen with her mother in the 1993 film The House of the Spirits, where she played the younger version of her mother's character. Mirroring her sister's experience once more, she took time off to complete her studies and then she went head first into an acting career where she hasn't slowed down since 2010.
Her most noticeable role to date is her current stint on the TV series Mr. Robot, where she plays the character Dominique DiPierro. Grace Gummer currently lives in Los Angeles, and she has not yet married or had children.
A Nod to the Beauty of the Gummer Girls
Louisa Jacobson Gummer is the fourth and youngest child of Meryl Streep and Don Gummer. Unlike the rest of her siblings, Louisa is the only child to be born outside of New York City. Instead, she was born on June 12, 1991, in Los Angeles, California.
Like both of her sisters, Louisa followed in her mother's footsteps by attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She majored in Psychology and graduated in 2013. Instead of heading to a career on the stage or screen, Louisa Gummer decided to pursue a career on the runway, and she has done so with great success.
The 5 foot 9, strikingly beautiful, young woman is officially signed to IMG Model Management, which is the same agency as the supermodels, Tyra Banks, Niki Taylor, Gisele Bündchen, and Kate Moss. Along with walking the catwalk on locations from New York, to Paris and London, Louisa's likeness has graced the covers of Vanity Fair, Glamour, and Dior magazines
Much like her mother, Louisa Gummer seems to prefer to keep the details of her personal life private. It is not certain who Louisa is dating, and we know that she does not have any children.
What I have learned in doing research for this article about Meryl Streep's children is that fact that the actress' first love is to her husband and children. All four of her college educated kids seem to be well-rounded individuals, and that is something all mothers hope for.
Her family's success is yet another awesome thing that keeps us perpetually in love with Meryl Streep.
