Beautiful Ginger Actresses
Call them what you will—redheads, gingers, even carrot tops—no matter what name you place on them, there's no denying there's a certain something about women with red hair. Whether natural or by choice, redheaded women attract attention everywhere they go. And in Hollywood, that often means they make it on the big screen. Think all the way back to Lucille Ball in the 1950s—curly red hair and prominent red lips!
Let's take a look at ten of Hollywood's hottest ginger stars and talk a bit about their allure and careers.
1. Rachel Hurd-Wood
Fans of actress Rachel Hurd-Wood had best enjoy the films she's already made since she's indicated she doesn't plan to spend her whole life acting. She actually only began acting when her grandparents saw an ad looking for a young girl to play Wendy Darling in the 2003 version of Peter Pan; it would go on to be her breakthrough role.
She hasn't always been dedicated to acting. At one time she expressed interest in becoming a marine biologist, and she has since stated an interest in working with children with special needs. At one point she was attending college with that goal in mind. She stated, "My primary focus has always been on school. I wouldn't describe myself as an actor. I'd describe myself as a student."
The lovely lass gets her fiery ginger hair and pale complexion from her Irish father, Philip Hurd-Wood, an actor and noted voice-over artist. Her distinct look has led to her being offered mainly roles in period pieces, but she's expressed frustration with always playing "a corseted victim." Her more recent roles, especially 2010s Tomorrow, When the War Began, finally seem to get her out of this type of role. Since then, she's made a few other films and starred as the lead in the show Clique for two seasons.
Hopefully, some juicier parts will come her way that keep her interested in acting.
2. Christina Hendricks
To be fair, Christina Hendricks is not a natural redhead. She is, in fact, blond but has dyed her hair since she was only ten years old. She has always liked redheads, such as Tina Louise who played Ginger Grant on Gilligan's Island, and has expressed a serious interest in assuming that role if a film about the series were to ever be announced. She has even said she modeled herself after Ginger.
She's best known for her role in all seven seasons of Mad Men and more recently for her comedic work in Good Girls. Through the years she has also starred in many other films and television series, constantly catching the audience's eyes with her acting abilities and beauty.
With Hendricks' stunning face and curves, it is unlikely redhead fans mind that her crimson shade comes from a bottle!
3. Alicia Witt
Alicia Witt was discovered by David Lynch when she appeared on the 1980s television show That's Incredible at the age of seven. He then cast her in his movie Dune, but she would soon leave acting to concentrate on school and music. She was home-schooled by her parents and graduated from high school at age 14. She also studied music during this time and became an accomplished classical pianist.
After Witt finished school, Lynch offered her a recurring role in his cult classic series Twin Peaks. From that point on she's worked consistently, appearing in everything from cheesy horror (Urban Legend with Jared Leto), mainstream comedy (Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah), and even indie-flavored drama (American Girl starring Jena Malone). More recently she has guest starred in television shows like Justified, Orange Is the New Black, and Nashville.

Already with almost 90 credits to her name, we can only hope to see more of this beauty in the upcoming years.
4. Alyson Hannigan
Alyson Hannigan's career really got started when she won the role of Willow Rosenberg on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series, but it exploded once she scored the part of Michelle Flaherty in the American Pie film series. Since then she has been constantly on the pop culture radar; even after Buffy ended she quickly moved on to the successful series How I Met Your Mother.
She's spent the last couple of years hosting the competition show Penn & Teller: Fool Us and lending her voice to Fancy Nancy. Hopefully, she has more projects in the works because with her auburn-tinged locks and captivating eyes, it is easy to see why she has held our attention for so long!
5. Isla Fisher
Isla Fisher was really first noticed by American audiences as the psycho sister in the comedy The Wedding Crashers where she pretty much stole the show. She then went on to see success in films like Wedding Daze, Hot Rod, and Confessions of a Shopaholic. More recently she appeared in The Great Gatsby, Now You See Me, and Nocturnal Animals. In 2022, she began starring as the lead in the show Wolf Like Me.
While her acting career blossomed, she also became a regular on the "hot lists" such as Maxim magazine's Hot 100. She married Sacha Baron Cohen (yes, that's right—Borat) in 2010, and the couple have three children together. She's easily one of the hardest working and most gorgeous mothers in Hollywood.
6. Gillian Anderson
As Special Agent Dana Scully on the mega-hit television show The X-Files, Gillian Anderson became widely known and broadly seen as one of the hottest women on television. Despite being always professionally dressed as a straight-arrow FBI agent in the show, there was no hiding her good looks.
Since the end of The X-Files in 2002, Anderson made several film and television appearances yet generally avoided sci-fi roles that might appeal to The X-Files fans. Her part in How To Lose Friends & Alienate People was exceptionally entertaining, but most fans don't even seem to realize she was in the film.
Her career was revived in the 2010s when The X-Files was rebooted for two more seasons. She then went on to win both an Emmy and Golden Globe for her work as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown and currently stars as a well-known sex therapist in the popular Netflix show Sex Education.
7. Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore's ginger hair and good looks come from her Scottish mother, while perhaps her dedication to craft and hard work likely comes from her military father.
Moore's career began in the mid-80s with work on soap operas, but soon she transitioned to small but memorable roles in films like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and The Fugitive. From there she moved to co-starring roles in films like The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Boogie Nights.
While some might say Boogie Nights was her breakthrough role, that might not be totally accurate. Moore achieved stardom in a less flamboyant, more traditional way. She earned it by putting in consistent and impressive work. Most fans would probably be unable to remember the first film they saw her in; you just kind of realize how awesome she is and never think twice.
She's been nominated for five Oscars and finally won for her role in Still Alice (2014). In the 2010s, she starred in both the Kingsman and The Hunger Games franchises and a number of other lower-profile films. Now in her early 60s, we can't wait to see what else is slated to star this red-haired beauty.
8. Gates McFadden
Gates McFadden is certainly best known as Dr. Beverly Crusher on the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series and subsequent film series, but she has an impressive career in show business even aside from her Star Trek connection.
She has worked as a muppeteer for the Jim Henson company and even choreographed the ballroom scene in the Jim Henson film Labyrinth. This is, of course, in addition to numerous other television appearances that included a recurring role on the popular series Mad About You.
Sadly, McFadden was not very active in the industry for several years. However, it was recently announced she will star, once again, as Dr. Beverly Crusher in the upcoming third season of the show Star Trek: Picard. The series stars Patrick Stewart in the lead role, who starred alongside McFadden in all her previous Star Trek work.
Her return to the screen will certainly be exciting for fans who fell in love with McFadden back during The Next Generation.
9. Amy Adams
Amy Adams is one of the 2000s most acclaimed actresses; she's been nominated for six Academy Awards and has won two Golden Globes from ten nominations. She's been nominated and won many other awards, and critics generally agree we will only continue to see more great performances from this fine thespian.
But the truth is, Adams is so gorgeous that she would be quite successful even without her substantial acting ability. Her exuberant personality shines through in each role she chooses making her a joy to watch. How charming was she as Giselle in Enchanted back in 2007? But even if she was nothing more than eye candy, she would still be guaranteed a long and successful career. And we can't wait for her to finally reprise her role as Giselle in the upcoming sequel Disenchanted!
10. Jayma Mays
Jayma Mays rose to prominence for her role on the hit television series Glee, but she has been catching the eye of ginger lovers for years in films like Red Eye, Epic Movie, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. She's had other television roles on shows like Heroes, Ugly Betty, and The Millers.
As if her gorgeous red hair were not enough to make this beauty stand out, she is also known for her captivating, huge brown eyes. At times she displays that deer-in-the-headlights innocence, making her appear quite vulnerable and delicate. But as she showed us in Ugly Betty, she can use that same expression to give an aura of a desperate woman on the edge—one capable of doing almost anything to keep her man.
She'll appear alongside Amy Adams in the upcoming film Disenchanted and were excited to see the two redheads perform alongside one another.

Having viewed portraits of both Queens, Lizzie had a much 'redder' crop of hair than the actresses who have portrayed her, whilst it seems Mary was actually brunette.

A current movie screened in cinema's across Britain regarding the rivalry between two reigning Queens, Elizabeth I of England and Mary I of Scotland. It is interesting both actresses portraying respective Monarchs are coiffured in red hair elaborately groomed. Both were formidable in their own right with Elizabeth virtually regarded by her courtiers as a warrior Queen.
Ian Stuart Robertson from London England on January 16, 2019:
Gillian Anderson who has natural auburn hair, latest photo stills have her coiffured as a silver blonde.

When i was little i recall a label on the Bryant & May matchboxes 'Redheads' with the logo being the outline only of a young lady but tufts of billowing red tresses. Obviously trade marked of course.

Great topic SpiderBytes! I am not familiar with your previous content nor with this particular site/group so I wish to clarify that I do not mean for any thing in my comments to offend anyone, most especially not this. I believe there is a need for a longer list. I happen to find it's quite difficult to rank two redheads against one another most of the time and especially if they have a similar body type even when doing so only for myself. So I get that it is not easy to narrow things down. I am not trying to suggest doing the top 50, but perhaps a list with somewhere around the 25 most beautiful actresses with red hair would have fewer suggestions for replacement or additions. I understand the level of thought required for each consideration in this situation, and I know you must have had specific reasons for doing so. However just in case decide to do it. Then I want to suggest both Rose Leslie(personal 4th) and Scarlett Johannson (personal 3rd) and if it applies that they each have ranks of at least 5th or higher. I tend to appreciate when there is at least a top 5 section most especially, Though I do I realize that your poll was meant to serve that function in this case. I hope that you did not find anything I said to be improper. Also that you will continue to share ideas of this nature and unrelated content, lastly I hope that you and yours will have a great day as well.

Dont forget Emma Stone ;)
She is my Number1 :$ :)
Ian Stuart Robertson from London England on April 20, 2015:
First time it is that i have realised that Gillian Anderson is actually a redhead, i have always regarded her hair colouring as auburn or perhaps auburn is classed as redhead. One thing for sure Gillian Anderson has timeless beauty bordering on the 'charismatic' and she knows how to handle men too! A few years ago i learned she spent some of her childhood in London, England when her family was staying at Highgate which is a leafy wooded hillside place just north of the city. As a red blooded adolescent boy just learning the facts of life there was another Hollywood 'red head' namely Jill St John, she was a stunner and also a no nonsense approach in dealing with males.

Two names belong on that list of beautiful Redheads. They are Maureen O'Hara and Debra Kerr. No list of great actress as well as beautiful Redheads would be complete without them.
