Actors and actresses get paid to lock lips with some of the most attractive stars in the world, which might seem like a dream gig to a lot of people. However, sometimes a costar’s poor oral hygiene, love of smelly foods, or leaking bodily fluids can turn shooting a kissing scene into a real nightmare.

Let’s take a look at a few of these offenders and the celebrities who have called their costars out for making kissing scenes uncomfortable. You might be surprised to discover that the grossest kissers include one of the hottest women in the world and one of Hollywood’s biggest male heartthrobs.

1. Liam Hemsworth

Jennifer Lawrence was once named the sexiest woman in the world by FHM magazine, but according to her Hunger Games costar Liam Hemsworth, kissing the blonde bombshell was far from being a sexy experience.

Liam told talk show host Jimmy Fallon that Jennifer would make sure to chow down on “disgusting” foods like garlic or tuna fish before all of their kissing scenes. She would then inform him that she couldn't be bothered to brush her teeth after stinking up her breath with the pungent snacks. This forced Liam to share her meals with her, which he was not happy about.

“I'd be like, 'Fantastic, I can't wait to get in there and taste it!'" he said of Jennifer’s twisted torturing of his poor tongue.

On the bright side of things, maybe having to pretend that he wasn't completely grossed out by kissing Jennifer Lawrence helped Liam Hemsworth improve his acting skills.

2. Josh Hutcherson

Sure, Liam had it bad, but Jennifer’s other Hunger Games costar had it much, much worse. According to MTV News, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson revealed the dirty details behind their Catching Fire kissing scene during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Josh said that their smooch got sloppy when some of Jennifer’s “slobber” got stuck to his face. However, Jennifer stepped in to inform her likely horrified costar that the substance she was dribbling on him was not her spit.

"You gotta see it," Jennifer said of their messy, mucus-y kissing scene. "There's all this snot coming out of my nose, and when I go to kiss Josh, it connects with his mouth."

Forget Catching Fire; it sounds like Josh was in danger of catching a nasty cold.

3. Robert Pattinson

Jennifer Lawrence isn't the only Hollywood heartbreaker who has powered through a kissing scene with a snotty nose. According to Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson, he had a really bad cold when he and Reese Witherspoon filmed one of their kissing scenes for the romantic movie Water for Elephants. His nose was running nonstop, but apparently he didn’t have any tissues on hand.

"Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig," he revealed.

Reese tried to be kind by simply calling the experience "not pleasant." However, it sounds like she could have used some of Jennifer Lawrence’s garlic to keep that leaky vampire away from her face.

4. Kirsten Dunst

Robert Pattinson isn’t the only Hollywood vampire who has made a costar feel uncomfortable during a kissing scene. When she was just 11 years old, Kirsten Dunst had to lock lips with Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire. She told the Los Angeles Times that she was less than thrilled about kissing one of the sexiest men in the world, saying it was “horrible” and that she absolutely hated the experience.

“It was like kissing your big brother -- totally gross!” she complained.

However, other people didn't believe that the kiss could have been that bad; they were envious of the young star's experience.

"Everyone at the time was like, 'You're so lucky you kissed Brad Pitt,' but I thought it was disgusting," she told Bullett magazine.

According to Kirsten, Brad made sure to let her know that he also wasn’t happy about filming their kissing scene.

“He said, 'How do you think I feel? I have to kiss a little girl.' It was awful!" she recalled.

The experience must have been rather traumatizing, because the actress didn't kiss anyone again until age 16.

5. Miles Teller

It doesn’t seem that odd for celebs to complain about kissing someone after they’ve eaten fish or other strong-tasting foods, but what about dirt?

Miles Teller was totally turned off by a dietary decision that his Spectacular Now costar Shailene Woodley made while they were shooting the coming-of-age movie. He complained that Shailene would eat stinky “Chinese dirt supplements” from a “dirt pouch” before their kissing scenes, which made the inside of his costar’s mouth taste terrible.

“They tasted like crap,” Miles revealed. “And she would always eat them right before we had a kissing scene! We put stuff in our mouths so we could just offend each other.”

Miles got his revenge on Shailene by drinking Gatorade before their kissing scenes. The fruity sports drink might not seem anywhere near as awful as smelly dirt supplements that taste like excrement, but evidently Shailene was equally annoyed by her costar’s pre-kiss power boost. Perhaps this is because she’s a health nut who can’t stand the thought of artificial colorings and flavorings touching her tongue.

6. Zac Efron

Zac Efron’s grossest kissing scene was all his fault. While some stars purposely terrorize each other with their food and beverage choices before they make out on camera, he was absolutely mortified when one of his meals ruined an onscreen smooch for its young recipient.

Zac’s first kiss came in the TV series Summerland when he was 16 years old. The High School Musical star was still new to the world of acting, so he was so impressed with the show’s catering offerings that he couldn’t resist chowing down on crab legs and salmon before he and then-13-year-old actress Kay Panabaker shot their kissing scene. He said that he was very nervous about shooting the scene, and he wanted to make Kay “as comfortable as possible” since she was so young. Unfortunately, Zac did not accomplish this goal.

“I’d shut my eyes, ready to go in…nothing happens..I’m going further..and nothing’s happening,” Zac recounted during an appearance on The Graham Morton Show. “I get further, like thinking eventually we’re going to touch. And all of a sudden I hear, ‘Oh my gosh. Did you have salmon for lunch? Seriously?'”

Because of the embarrassing experience, Zac said that he now makes sure that he always has a toothbrush with him. To prove that he’s not lying about his obsession with oral hygiene, he whipped one of the dental implements out of his pocket to show to Graham Morton and the talk show host’s audience.

7. Megan Fox

It will be hard for any star to ever top Megan Fox's kissing scene horror story. During a 2009 interview with GQ magazine, Megan revealed that she, like Kay Panabaker, also had to kiss a young man who had just eaten. However, she wasn’t just forced to smell and taste the food on his breath. According to Megan, the unnamed actor actually passed a small piece of food from his mouth to hers.

“I swear to God. Not on purpose. Like it was in his tooth or something?” Megan said. “And it was really salty. I'm not making this up. I almost cried."

Before they shoot kissing scenes, actors and actresses might want to stock up on tissues and oral hygiene goody bags like those that you get the dentist.
