10 Running Man Moments When Variety Gods Were With Lee Kwang Soo

Updated on March 7, 2018

Lee Kwang Soo has always been intended to be the odd one out, the bullied one and the silly one. He is the tallest in the group which makes him stand out. He is the youngest. He is also an actor which allows him to take on different personas.

However, no one expected him to build such a powerful character in Running Man. The show is really unimaginable without him. Yoo Jae Suk often says that the variety gods favor him and with his luck, I may actually believe it.

Below are some of those moments when Lee Kwang Soo seems to be having bad luck. Even when he is not actively creating funny or silly moments, things simply happen to him that are so silly, funny, absurd and downright crazy that the PDs just can't help but give him the airtime.

Let us look at the top 10 moments when the variety gods clearly favored the Running Man's maknae. This is in no particular order.

1. Ep 1 - It Started to Rain on Lee Kwang Soo

Lee Kwang Soo's fate in Running Man was already decided the minute he opened his mouth on the show. In Episode 1, as Yoo Jae Suk introduces each member and gives them the floor to greet the audience, the rain starts getting heavier. By the time it was Lee Kwang Soo's turn to speak, the rain was pouring like crazy. The other members started looking for an umbrella, asking the production people to stop filming until the rain subsided and just plain laughing at the absurdity of the situation.

Yoo Jae Suk didn't have a choice but to attend to the other members and ignore Lee Kwang Soo.

Lee Kwang Soo starts to realize no one was listening to him and asks the members to pay attention to him. Of course they didn't.

Just like that, the variety gods introduced Lee Kwang Soo to the world.

2. Ep 143 - Of Course He Chose the Raw Egg

In episode 143, the members were given a dozen eggs and only a couple are raw. Each member has to take a turn and break the egg on their forehead. Naturally, whoever gets the raw egg loses and also ends up looking silly.

Of course it's Lee Kwang Soo. Although everyone has the hunch that he will get the raw egg, no one expected him to get it twice.

Oh but don't expect anything less from the variety gods.

3. Ep 214 - Even the Ball Hates Him

With Rain as guest, there was a good chance the screen time of the members was going to be limited but the variety gods weren't about to let that happen. Lee Kwang Soo needs to have at least one bad luck per episode.

During a game of RM-style handball, Rain's team was trying to get the ball out of the net. When the guest kicked the ball, you guessed it, it hit Lee Kwang Soo.

4. Ep 37 - Running Man Fan Signing RM Style

In the first year of Running Man, the members were dropped off in different isolated locations and were asked to do a fan signing. The first one to get 30 autograph cards out could move on to the location of the next mission. As expected, Ji Suk Jin had the worst turnout but Lee Kwang Soo's situation was funnier.

The rest of the members were quickly finishing their fan signing and were driving to the location of the other members so they could pick them up and go to the next location. When Kim Jong Kook and Yoo Jae Suk get to Lee Kwang Soo's location, he wasn't done yet and still had more than ten people in front of him.

He yelled for Kim Jong Kook and Yoo Jae Suk to wait for him but when the fans realized it was the Commander and the National MC in the car, they took Lee Kwang Soo's cards and brought it to the two other members in the car to be signed. Only a couple of fans stayed in front of Lee Kwang Soo.

Lee Kwang Soo was speechless and one fan said, "Your popularity rating is hopeless. There's nothing you can do about it."

The PD decided to add to the chaos by saying Lee Kwang Soo cannnot finish the mission because his cards were taken away.

5. Ep 169 - The Butterfly Choose Kwang Soo

The members were all looking silly with a helmet on their heads in the opening.

When the PD starts explaining the mission, a butterfly lands lands on Kim Jong Kook's head. Ever the rebellious bullied kid, Lee Kwang Soo jumps on the opportunity to hit Kim Jong Kook's head, claiming he was shooing away the butterfly. The Commander, of course, vowed to take revenge.

The variety gods didn't take long to give Jong Kook the opportunity as the butterfly lands on Kwang Soo's nose. Jong Kook saw it and immediately hits Kwang Soo's face making the maknae go down to the ground.

6. Ep 169 - Lee Kwang Soo and His Crazy Partner

Even when they are asked to pair up with random Korean citizens, he still ends up with the craziest ones.

In episode 169, Lee Kwang Soo's "ahjumma acting partner" was going all out on skinship. She was also going around taking selfies with the members and guests. At one point, she even did an innocent gesture trying to pop the balloon but it turned out to be a little adult for Korean viewers.

7. Ep 162 - Idols Don't Care

With Mblaq's Seungho and Leejoon teamed up with Kwang Soo, the members were already teasing him for falling behind in the looks department but Kwang Soo, of course, doesn't fall short on confidence and tells everyone he very much "belongs" to the group.

However, in the water mission, with the Mblag members passing, Lee Kwang Soo is left to battle for the last place against Ji Suk Jin. Lee Kwang Soo looks on to his two teammates to cheer him on but the Leejoon was busy chitchatting with other cast members while Seungho finds staring at the water more interesting than watching Kwang Soo.

8. Ep 135 - Even Jackie Chan Bullies Him

You know you are royalty when even Jackie Chan innocently answers a question about you and it turns out to be a funny.

In Episode 135, Jackie Chan's chemistry with the members is starting to show and they start talking about Chan's old movies. Lee Kwang Soo blurts out some of Chan's old movies. When Yoo Jae Suk asks Chan how old he thinks Lee Kwang Soo is, Chang said 45 causing everyone to laugh.

9. Ep 126 - The Pants Give Up

Even when Lee Kwang Soo is doing some silly mission and fixated on completing it, crazy things still happen like his pants completely falling down so that by the end of his turn, he finds himself converting a bathrobe to a pair of pants.

10. Ep 141 - Lee Kwang Soo and the Giraffe

In episode 141 (Animal Kingdom) episode, members were given a challenge in the zoo. Eun Ji Won's challenge was to get 3 giraffes in a frame for five seconds without moving. After procrastinating, he was running out of time and Lee Kwang Soo started pestering him.

A variety show veteran, Eun Ji Won realized that Lee Kwang Soo is a giraffe in the show. He asked Lee Kwang Soo to stand near the giraffes and stay still so that he only needs 2 more in the frame.

What happened next was unbelievable.

Three giraffes stood motionless as they stare at Lee Kwang Soo. One particular giraffe stood longer than the others just making eye to eye contact with RM's giraffe.

Later, Lee Kwang Soo had an even closer encounter with his own mission as he feeds the giraffe and gave the animal a kiss.

This, more than anything, confirmed that Yoo Jae Suk was right when he said that Lee Kwang Soo is a giraffe.

Of course there are more. There is that episode when elementary kids state that a giraffe's sound is "betray betray," and when students from a university (Ep 17) exposed Lee Kwang Soo's bad boy image when he was still in school, and others.

I am sure there will be more to come. How about you? What are your favorite Lee Kwang Soo "bad luck" moments that prove the variety gods are always on his side.
