10 Reasons Why Being Famous Isn't All That Great

Is Fame All It's Set out to Be?

Everyone thinks that being famous is awesome, but when I think about it, I just don’t get it.

Sure, you might get rich and might not have to worry about paying your bills anymore, but like P Diddy used to say in the Puff Daddy days, “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems.” No amount of money in the world would make me want to give up my privacy.

Of course there are many other perks to being a celebrity, but are any of them really worth it? Here's why I think it sucks being a celebrity…

1. Paparazzi

You can’t get a break, ever. I can’t imagine wanting to go shopping or grab a coffee and having to worry about people running after me to take pictures.

I have a friend who works in Manhattan at a high-end fashion retail store where famous people go all the time. Rihanna went recently, and she was wearing a skirt and a short shirt. She told the sales associates she felt suddenly uncomfortable in what she was wearing because there was a guy outside trying to snap pictures of her, so they gave her a sweater to put on. She thanked them, and she was very nice, but doesn’t that suck? She could buy whatever she wants, but I’d rather have my privacy.

What about all these magazines we see with photos of famous women getting out of a car and their crotches are showing? I WOULD DIE if someone put a picture like that of me so everyone could see. This type of situation could easily happen to anyone, if you're wearing a skirt and the wind blows or whatever.

2. No Private Life

Your life is not only yours anymore. It’s everybody’s, apparently.

Look at happened with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Funny because I’m not one to read up on celebs, but I see it everywhere. It’s actually annoying, and frankly, I could give a rat’s ass if they stayed together or got divorced, but it seems like everyone in the world is infatuated with this news. And their poor daughter, who is young and doesn’t understand why the whole world is talking about her mommy and daddy separating. That’s sad to me. I wouldn’t want to bring a child into this world for everyone to see.

3. Celebrity Can Make You or Break You

Some famous people do very well with the attention, and even use it for good by helping out the disadvantaged or drawing attention to causes and charities or adopting a child from a 3rd world country.

Others, though, fall into drugs, make stupid decisions with their money, pull self-destructive antics, and do all kinds of dumb stuff that only prove that they don't deserve any attention.

4. Rumors

People love to start rumors about celebrities. Sometimes it is not a big deal, but sometimes people can say some really nasty things about you and it can have a negative affect on your life, your future, and your family.

5. Public Fights with Other Famous People

Look at Drake and Chris Brown supposedly fighting over Rihanna. I’m not sure what happened and frankly I don’t care, but it seemed to be over a woman. Imagine being famous and having to be around people you don’t want to be around, but you have to be there. That sucks. I wouldn’t want to deal with that.

6. Traveling All the Time

Celebrities tend to have to be away from friends and family for long periods of time. I would think it’s a lonely world for a celebrity.

Here's a hottie for all of you, Pam Anderson! [[Cough, Cough, ew]]
Here's a hottie for all of you, Pam Anderson! [[Cough, Cough, ew]] | Source

7. Stalkers

Most of us know about Whitney Houston’s stalkers— one of them was harassing her, calling her offices, sending her flowers, claiming to be her brother—who ended up getting arrested for possession of weapons. Imagine what could have happened if her team hadn’t noticed he was suspicious. Also Selena, one of the best-selling Latin stars of the 90s, was murdered at the young age of 23 by the president of her fan club who was also her so-called “friend.”

Being famous means you have to watch your back.

8. You're Always Playing a Part

I don’t think I have to name names here, but I will: Kim Kardashian = retarded, Kanye West = moron, Tara Reid = trashy, Lyndsay Lohan = screw up. You get my drift.

9. Trust Issues: People Use You

You don’t know who your real friends are. You don’t know who to trust, or who’s going to be the next one to reach out to the gossip magazines and spill your beans. You don’t even know who your real lover is.

10. You Can't Mess Up

Fame is fickle. If you mess up, your fans may lose respect for you in a heartbeat, you may not get the roles you want anymore, and others can replace you. Don't make the mistake of believing your fame is the result of some unique quality only you possess: You are always replaceable.

What do you think? Would you want to be famous?

See results

So that's about it. I'm not ranking on famous people, just telling it like it is. I'm not famous myself, so I really don't know what it's like, but I'd rather not find out. I don't like people in my business already, hell, I don't even like the way I look in pictures most of the time. Imagine what it would be like if I was famous?!

Well as with all things in life, fame is not for everyone. Some manage their fame well others do things in private life and get found out. It’s about balance and control of yourself, being professional and being respectful. You have to know how to carry yourself more then you do in private life.

You’ve got to be in control. The ones who do poorly get into the underside, drinking, drugs, partying or just plain losing control of themselves in public.

Money is great, fame is great but you have to live accordingly to survive and do well.

Fame says: in the end it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, it how good you looked.

      Fame isn’t for everyone.

to be honest I think being famous is not a good thing and I agree to this statement. My uncle and I saw this page so we clicked on it and found it interesting. We agreed to some of the statements but one of them was my favourite which was 'always watch out for your back' and I agree to that but I think it's better to trust your family, yourself of course, someone trustworthy, a doctor or a police officer, it's better believe them instead of a celebrity because you wouldn't know about them I men you might search it up but the interne doesn't know everything in the world.

I totally agree although I'm not famous I think celebrity's should have a chance in being able to do what they want to do. And its not fair that they can't have friends that they can trust. My step dad dated a girl who was cousins with Peter Facinelli and she told him stories about her cousin. People should get of celebs backs and just leave them alone.

For me personal I just can't but believe it or not we not famous people or else the world would be even more crazier.

The saddest aspect is how the famous people's children get dragged into something they never asked for. If only we could have the joyful adventurous aspects without the drama and other bullshit.

I would gladly sell my immoral soul to become super famous. Like Michael Jackson can't go anywhere without being mobbed by thousands of people famous. I can't comprehend where a lack of personal life is a downside. If anything I'd be thrilled that millions of people even think about my personal life. Quite frankly, I'd actually rather be super famous than super wealthy. I would gladly spend all of eternity push a boulder up a hill in Hell in exchange for superstardom and fame.

Oh Boo hoo! I feel bad for some of the ones who grew up in the spotlight and have never lived a normal life but that's it. I'm 29 I've come to the realization that I'll never be moving to New York and getting famous, those dreams are gone, but if I had the chance I'd be there in a second. It is what you make it, imagine all the special treatment these people get, the perks they have?! If you don't want to deal with people stay home, I'm not famous but if I don't feel like getting fixed up I get takeout. I worked at a Hooters 3 times when I was younger some weirdo stole my photo off the wall and told people I was his girlfriend oh well. I get that is just one time and these people have to deal it with constantly but hey people actually care enough about what's going on in your life to follow you anywhere; and it's obvious that there are ways to keep things private. Had I actually gotten some of those modeling opportunies I was told about by the manager that I found out were non existent I wouldn't have kept quitting. The managers just baited girls in with modeling opportunities to get you in that horrible uniform, had it been true I would have loved it; I will say in their defense I did keep quitting when I didn't get my way. I grew up in Leeds Al where Charles Barkely is from he would come give speeches at our school it's a nice thing to do, people didn't flock to school trying to get in. If you live in one place long enough people will realize that you're life as a celebrity is not that majestic and care less when they see you out. I would love to be famous, I wold jump on that band wagon in a heart beat. It would be awesome to be able to do things we can't afford as a military family.

I used to want to be famous, but I changed my mind FAST! because I prefer my privacy for I am a VERY private person. Celebrities like Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner have gone to court to protect their kids' privacy, but you accept all that come with being a celebrity, your privacy is confiscated and you put all, your life and entire immediate family out there in public for viewing. This why I thought twice about fame.

      a persons life-

Rank 1-rich +inheriting lots of assets + business/Work + little popular within own circle

Rank 2-rich + celebrity status + very popular + no privacy + girls

Rank 3-little rich + good paying job + Good/Bad family

      Rank 4-poor-upper middle class + nothing + Good/Bad family

so ideal thing would be to be rich and engaging some business or inherited assets, but what i ask is i have never seen anyone who doesn't want to become a celebrity because of privacy issue.if they, then there would be no competition.

I would do what I love to do and if people start rumours then who cares

not me it's really just someone who wants to be mean and I wouldn't care

and I love popperotzzi I think it would be cool it's like having a photo shoot wherever you go.

And I know there is gonna be someone who didagrees with what I am saying but I really don't care I would not do it for the money the fame I would do it because it's what I want to do.

Impossible. Fame is the best thing in the world. All of the above is only a small price to pay. Who cares about privacy when you have fame? I mean privacy shmivacy, I say film me all you like. I have 30 poses for you already as I'm speaking. I'd take it as a compliment that anyone would want to photograph me. Celebrities are sooks, if they don't like paparazzi photographing them, why are they even there at the same time and same place as them. Celebrities should stop whinging, I mean come on personal space is for babies, your famous tough it out. Just let it all hang out! Film me in the bathroom while changing, go for gold I say. It makes me more rich and more loved, so go ahead. As for rumors who gives, say whatever, I am on top of the world and living it up. Celebrities have an affluent lifestyle, designer clothes, luxury car, jewelry, private jets, get to travel a lot, have personal trainers, beautician, party invites, fans and a mansion, what more could you want?? That itself sums the key to happiness. Isn't that all mans ever dreamed of, material wealth beyond imagination, wearing designer labels, blowing money away whenever, letting loose when you can, endless party, numerous partners, loose matrimonial ties and on top of that no 9 to 5 job. I say pfft to rumors, If I want to rock my caboose, I'll do it because I can afford to. I'll never have to work again, ever. Money and fame will keep flowing to me like a splattering fountain of youth just for being a celebrity.

Beef with other celebrities!! Who cares. When your affluent opinions of others don't matter, even bad opinions from other celebrity. When your rich, friends, family and love must go, your to elegant and glamorous to care. You can't afford to twitch a fingernail on anything, fame is a godly status.

As for drugs. Argh celebrities just have it all don't they. Who doesn't aspire to being drugged up, wasted and dizzy. I would like to see double vision, party myself stupid and not remember what I did a few minutes ago. If I'm lucky my double visions see's women with four tits. That's the life! Being a celebrity is all I could ever want above happiness, love and health which mean nothing to me. I can't buy anything with happiness, I can't pay for my fendi with my smile. Give me instant gratification over spiritual enlightenment any day!

How can anyone not see that being a celebrity is the best thing in the world. Just look at all of Megan Fox perks. What a lucky women she got them all before 30. See how stable, blissful and over joyed Angelina Jolie, Lindsay Lohan, Bjork and Chris Brown are. It's obvious they've done something right. See Simon Cowell ? he's as merry as lamb chops. As well as Justin Biebers, king you tube, home video pro and master of impeccable timing for everything. Smelt his perfume the one in a purple bottle pink flower with a marked down price tag, that's the smell of success people aspire to wear. When your a celebrity you own the world and blow kisses to all those who dream of you.

a year and a half ago I was brought out into the line light over the internet and with in weeks I had become an internationally known martial artist all because a cyber bully. with in a year I was rubbing shoulders with big name martial artist from around the world and people calling me at all of hours of the night and day just to have the chance to say they talked to me over the phone to their friends. people started asking me to make guest appearances at their dojos. people around the world were asking me to teach them so I had to start an on line training program and create a staff to help me with every little aspect of it. I now have a internet security team that decides who I can friend on my facebook and who I can not. I have p.r. rep that tells me how to live my life over the internet and in public. yea I get to travel a lot on other peoples dime but when I get there I have all of these people that wont to hang out with me. sign autographs and taking pictures of me. over the internet there are hundreds of people that I have to communicate with all day so I now have a staff that talks for me most of the time just so I can have some me time. but then there are about 15 people over the internet that talk trash about me and make up lies about me which then just brings in more fans every time that I have to deal with. people around the world think that I make a lot of money but I really don't. because of that they many times expect me to do events for them for free or expect that I can travel anywhere I want at a drop of a hat to just come and visit them just so they can say they met me in person but I don't have the money for that. heck I don't even have the time for it. two or more times a year I am traveling to up to 15 locations all for work and doing it with in one or two months just so I can be back to teach the students waiting on me in my own home state. then constantly getting phone calls from my staff asking me who would you like us to respond to this person or that person. some people ask me why don't you just walk away from it. I wish it was that easy. I like the recognition I am getting for the decades of hard work I have put into martial arts but if I was to try to walk away from it, it would just follow me for the rest of my life. my face is everywhere on the internet and will be for ever now. I could sit it out and hide for 20 years and as soon as I go out side after that 20 years of hiding my face. at some point someone somewhere is going to say hay aren't you Grand Master Dan C Harmon. when you become a celebrity in any shape or form it stays with you even after death. I read the list of 10 on here and it fits my life anywhere to 60% to 80%. I can't go out and buy what ever I wont because I am not rich even if people think I am. I have more bills now then I did before so that make money go quicker. keeping a relationship with anyone, even some family members have become impossible. I have some family members that will kiss butt up to my face but then talk trash about me behind my back. it did not used to be that way. I used to be the member of the family that would be treated like ever other family member but now that I am well known they kiss my but, go around say we are related, yea him, isn't it so cool that guy is my family member but then even though all of them do that now some of them will talk trash be hind my back buy posting things about me of my child hood that I don't want people to know about just so these family members can make a buck or two off of my name and legally there is nothing I can do about it. the bottom line is yea you get a lot of respect from 100's of people around the world but you have know life of your own because you end up with a team of people telling you where to be and what to do.

Wonderful hub, and I agree with all of your points. I wouldn't mind the money part so there would never be any worries about bills, etc. But I think I would like my fortune earned without the fame. Of course, you still have to deal with insincere people.

Two years ago, my husband was injured at work, and when we started the proceedings for the workers compensation benefits, it was amazing how many "friends" we suddenly had. As soon as they found out we weren't going to be wealthy (or even comfortable) by any stretch of the imagination, they vanished again. So, I can just imagine what it would be like with a million+ dollars!

I think I will just take a nice middle ground and enjoy not having cameras in my face whenever I want to check the mailbox. :)

Amazing Kim K. is famous for being famous. As much as I like money, giving up privacy doesn't seem worth the cost.

Great article...I remember when I was younger, famous was all I wanted to be...it felt like that was the ultimate dream...the thought of being famous now doesn't appeal at all, and for many of the reasons you have given here...voted awesome:-))

Thank you and I totally agree! I mean you can make the best of any situation, the sad thing is, is that a lot of these young starts got a hold of all this money through their work before they even knew who they were. So they fell into bad places:/

I enjoyed reading this article! Well written and presented. There certainly are many pitfalls to being famous or a celebrity. I prefer my privacy also and I feel bad for the child stars like Lindsay Lohan and Macauly Caulkin who can't transition to adulthood. It is sad and pathetic to watch.

(Lol, late comment, but just found this article and loved it!) I agree with everything written here! My sister models and it's hard to even go out with her sometimes because you always feel like there's somebody watching you. And most of the time, there is a paparazzi lurking somewhere. I can't even imagine having to deal with that on a daily basis, though!

I feel bad for these famous people. Of course fame is nice at the start but as it goes for a longer time it can damage your whole well-being. I'm particularly feeling bad about Lindsay Lohan. Not a fan of hers, but she's beautiful and talented and has a lot of going for her. She has paid the price of fame. I don't think for many years she'll ever recover her career or her former self.

Sweety, follow your dreams whatever they are, as long as they are for the right reasons. The reason these stars get bad mouthed is because they let it happen, if you became famous and were respectful of yourself, you would probably still get bad mouthed but not as bad. And knowing you have your self worth, it wouldn't matter to you anyway! Go for that passion girly!

Growing up I wanted to be a famous singer , always shy tho to sing in front of people but it was a passionate dream I had but now I see all the celebrities and what they go thru to keep up their imagine and stardom till I realize I just wanna be who god made me to be , being famous is great starting off cause if your like me n wanted attention well your going to get a lot of that and if your like me and want to be the most one they talk about then you most certainly will depending on how famous you are.. But one thing I hate the most is people make celebrities as gods because if they make one little mistake they talk about it forever making them feel bad and you go the media and fans that will believe anything they see .. Famous people are human just like normal people so why can't they make mistakes ... Anyway thanks for the post it really helped and made me realize MONEY CAN'T NEVER BUY HAPPINESS!!

I've always thought I wouldn't want to be famous - just the lack of private life in general. I think I would like to be in the situation of someone like...say a movie director. They are rich, work with all the famous people...but just get a little less attention than the actual stars themselves.

      Seems like a nice balance....ha!

      Nice hub!

This is true, but there are far more famous people that are providing bad examples for the younger generations and those are the people in the spot light. I know this wasn't my focus of this article but this is just my attitude towards the rich and the famous, we are all stupid for obsessing over them when they have no idea who WE are. Jackie Chan can be the exception, lol.

Maybe some people will use the advantage to help those less fortunate. To have a bigger voice, in reality, people seem to give more money, listening to people in the limelight.

I think you might want to think of other people that do this....and yes everything does comes back to Jackie Chan with me.

His facebook page alone has over 28 million people on it.

Yet as big as he is, he doesn't sit back on his butt, he actually gives back so much and started foundations himself.

I also tend to think, anybody that trains in a martial arts their whole life and is an actor, seem to be well balanced and those are the people I look up to and the path I follow.

For all the reasons you mention, fame is not worth a penny for the invasion you must suffer. I lived that life for a short while when I realized I was putting my whole family in jeopardy. My daughter, who is a celebrity wardrobe stylist and dresses movie stars for red carpet award ceremonies and such will never allow her face to be seen. Even when a producer was short on actors for a commercial he was producing, he absolutely needed her to do double duty - dress the actors and be in the commercial. She finally gave in, but she refused to allow her face to be seen. Somehow they worked it out to where you can only see the back of her. The rest of her team stepped up to be front and center. It's a big deal to be in a commercial. Right? But my daughter refused to be out there like that. So, in the commercial, you only see the back of her. It's kind of funny. She said she has seen first hand what celebrities go through, so the only time people will get to see her face is behind the scenes. Smart girl.

to be able to make things happen...I work monday through thursday, ten hours a day, so I can work on my dreams.

To top it off, I am not doing the roles, where you are kissing and taking my clothes off.

I try to my best ability to do my own fight scenes and such.

I been working every single day for over the past 7 years, and haven't had a real day off.

You do get exhausted and you have to keep going, cause nothing is being handed to you.

Maybe some people are handed things, but to get where I am right now, and run fan club pages and many things, it is a lot of work, and you never stop.

Back to the fight scenes and such...next month I'm turing 42 and I know I'm going to have to train more, because to be able to work with Jackie, it is going to be a lot of work..

But I'm blessed, because I have a teacher, and have trained a little bit in martial arts..so I do believe this is going to help keep me grounded.

I don't do drugs, not a smoker, and try to stay away from all negative things.

I also don't worry about having a whole entourage of men or fake people to stroke my ego...I only surround myself with those that are going to help lift me higher.

I just would like to step in and say something.

Just from working in and around the entertainment business, working in indie films and I only worked on a two of those so called big sets...The Gameplan, the remake of The Women....

To let you guys know, it is hard work...the hours are very long, and you actually have to work.

From behind the scenes, working in indie films, we have to have a full time job, just to make dreams come true.

Not all actors and such are born with a silver spoon, we just have to keep going to make things happen.

My dream is to work with Jackie Chan, and I'm working on some films now and even getting together my own film, it is a short, but it is to thank Jackie and this is not easy.

I started doing a radio show, writing and many things, while holding a full time job, and I support myself and

Yes that is very true, I once read something on Kirsten Dunst saying that she can never trust anyone because she doesn't know who really wants to be her friend or who wants to use her. I wholeheartedly agree.

As I said in one of my articles, this world belongs to the extroverts and it seems that if you got the 'extrovert gene' you stand to be worshipped and placed high up on a pedestal among Gods!

Yes, indeed. Let's gang up on these gods and how em that we "small" people are just as entitled to the riches or at least a share!

Thanks for the read and comment Richard. I say we "small" people gang up against the rich and famous and fight for our rights to make more money, maybe by lessening the money famous people make. I mean, we are working harder than they do but they're getting 100x more pay. What the hell is that?! But you know what, society is to blame for this because society is obsessed with the rich and famous for some reason. As for me, I don't obsess over anything or anyone that doesn't even know my first name. Why waste my time?!

Yep, Euroninila. I completely agree with you.

I don't understand why anyone would want to be famous, well I suppose there are people out there willing to put up with all that incredible baggage for ... the MONEY!

They get paid far too much anyway. A job they enjoy, treated like royalty, like gods, live like kings etc etc and they get paid astronomical wages! While the rest of us work a hell of a lot harder to earn wages that are tiny in comparison. But don't get me wrong, ... I'm just sayin! haha

Anyway, I completely agree with this article. I wouldn't swap this life for a life of fame! It's good to be normal, or at least almost normal! hahaha

      Peace
