Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) Anime Opening & Ending Theme Songs With Lyrics

Updated on April 19, 2016

Kenshin Himura, Hitokiri Battosai

I used to love Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai X as it was also known. I still do, in fact. I just fell in love with Kenshin Himura, Saito Hajime, and Aoshi Shinomori, three major characters in the hit manga, and I must have watched every single episode of the show. Loved them so much I went so far as fantasizing I was an anime character!

What I remember the most though was its impressive array of opening and ending themes which were changed once, twice, or thrice in each season. The songs where so catchy that I memorized every single one of them even though I don't speak Japanese.

I've compiled the videos of all the opening and ending themes, admittedly for selfish reasons but I'm sharing them with you, and their lyrics, too, so you can sing along. Rurouni Kenshin buffs like myself will surely think they've died and gone to heaven when they see this. Enjoy!

"Sobakasu" by Judy and Mary was the first opening theme of Rurouni Kenshin. It was used from episode 1 to 38.

Yes, I thought the movie was awesome as well. They did a great job recreating the manga/anime into live action. And Takeru Sato did a superb job as Kenshin IMHO. :D

Some of the names are different (e.g. Kaoru and Yahiko are Kory and Yoshi respectively in the Sony dub). And if I remember correctly, a lot of the voice actors are different.

OMG thank you, THANK YOU! I love Rurouni Kenshin as well! I suppose the reason why so many boys love RK (i'm not saying there aren't women who love it too) is the same reason alot of women love the Ellen Degeneres show. To us, we can connect to Kenshin on a personal level; he's so human, that as a male viewer, he is seen as being a sort of a "brother figure"; a sort of friend you look up to when you're in doubt as to how to live your life well. =)

hi miss susan.. thank you so much for this site. it really makes me happy everytime i see or hear anything that has something to do with kenshin himura. he makes my heart melt. when i was a kid i even dreamed of marrying him someday. i watched every single night all the episodes and watch it over and over again. i don't mind waiting everynight back then.i even memorized shishio's motto: the strong shall live and the weak shall die." and he makes me gooooeeeyyyy and soooo girly inside. i was inlove with kenshin. i think that nothing in this world could ever replace kenshin himura in my heart. i love you miss susan and thank you for making me remember the things that made me smile when i was a kid and all the good morals that kenshin has taught me in life. most of all thank you for making me a little kid again. i needed this. a break of this harsh adult world.

ive grown to love Samurai X..up till now its one of my fave anime of all time! the plot is great..its historic story is awesome with all those various japanese era that somewhat related to the reality of japan.

i was so amazed of it..not until ive watch the few episode before the end of its anime tv series which is a huge disappointment! what will be a great samurai warrior be related to Feng Shui drama ever.! aghhh

anyway, about its opening and ending songs, its an anime with a great list of songs from various artists. the first song that i love was 1/2, 1/3 and 4th aveneu cafe. but later after a few readings ive finally decided to go for 4th avenue cafe by L-Arc-en-Ciel. why? because this was aired only for 6 episodes and then fades away due to some issues regarding to their band that involves "drugs" that lead to one of their member under arrest and all their songs during that period were banned including the 4th avenue cafe. all in all i love their songs....thanks for posting.

You're quite welcome, Shinsengumi-eker. :) I love Saito Hajime as well. He and and Aoshi Shinomori are my favorites. And his villainous bad-ass-ness is exactly what makes him so appealing! :D

By the way my favorite character in Samurai X is Saito Hajime. Yeah! yeah! I know most of all anime fanatic don't like Saito because of being villain looks bad-ass cop. Hehe but i love him especially his fighting stance it is so cool.

You're welcome, AKSam. :) You know, the Media Blasters version is the one that's easy to find. :) And it's easy to tell which version it is, actually. If you hear the names Kaoru Kamiya and Yahiko Myojin, that's the Media Blasters dub. Kaoru is Kori and Yahiko is Yoshi in the Sony dub. :)

Here's episode 1 of Rurouni Kenshin (Media Blasters english dub):

Wow thanks for that bit of SamuraiX history Susan :)

I guess the Media Blasters version is the one that I'm looking for, but can't get it around :( I saw a Sony dub version on YouTube and I know that's not the one because the dubs are terrible! The voice overs really suck! :( Ah well, the search continues, but thanks again for your help Susan :)

Hi, AKSam. I've been looking for the Sony dub as well but no one seems to have it. :(

I think the story is that Sony tried to market Samurai X first in Asia and Europe but didn't get the reception they had hoped for, so they sold the rights to the series. Media Blasters picked it up, redubbed it practically rewriting the entire script, and released it in the United States as Rurouni Kenshin. :O

The one I watched on television many many years ago was the Sony dubbed version. I loved the voices of Shishio Makoto and Aoshi Shinomori. :)

Hi, Charia. I'm glad your husband liked it. :) I didn't record these videos though, but I searched every nook and corner of YouTube to find them and watched every single video I could find so I could select the ones with the best quality. Yes, it took a lot of time to find the videos, especially since most of them were mislabeled or had Japanese titles. :P

I remember fighting over the remote with my husband, (who was then my boyfriend), because of this. It was shown here in ch23 if I remember it correctly. He adores it so much. Maybe later I’ll tell him to look into this. Thanks for sharing.
