What are Geass in "Code Geass"?

In the anime/manga Code Geass, Geass refers to supernatural abilities unlocked by making a contract with code-bearers like C.C. Geass vary by individual, but they utilize a variety of mental tricks to manipulate emotion, thought, and more.

Geass manifests as a glowing mark in the eye when used, and while they provide incredible powers, they also bear various limits and conditions—which reign supreme? These are the 10 best Geass abilities throughout Code Geass! Spoilers ahead.

Mao's Geass

Mao's Geass

10. Seal of Absolute Sound

User: Mao
Description: Read minds within a certain range.

Mao's unique Geass makes him one of few to outwit Lelouch by anticipating his plans. It's a powerful effect that can even pierce mental deceptions; Lelouch's attempt to think multiple thoughts doesn't faze it. However, Mao's overusage of the effect causes it to go wild, making it permanently active, which can overload Mao in crowded areas.

Jeremiah's Geass Cancel

9. Geass Cancel

User: Jeremiah Gottwald
Description: Negates other nearby Geass.

Jeremiah's unique anti-Geass power was granted via cybernetic implants, allowing him to cancel other nearby Geass. Unlike some effects, his doesn't require eye contact and can penetrate physical barriers. It can also perform a sort of healing by repairing minds and memories damaged by Geass.

Orpheus Zevon

8. Disguise

Users: Orpheus Zevon/Swaile Qujappat
Description: Physically become another person (Orpheus), confuse enemies with allies (Swaile)

We've seen two versions of this interesting power. Oprheus, protagonist of spinoff Oz the Reflection, can effectively become someone for five minutes, adopting not only their looks but also their mannerisms and voice. The weakness here is that he doesn't know when it ends (unless he specifically tracks the time), and the effect doesn't fool cameras.

In the movie Lelouch of the Re;surrection, we see Swaile use a similar power that masks multiple people, causing victims to see their allies as enemies and enemies as allies.

Either way, it's a versatile Geass useful in both combat and subterfuge.

Marianne's Geass

Marianne's Geass

7. Soul Transfer

User: Marianne vi Britannia
Description: Transfers her soul into another body.

After being mortally wounded, Marianne's unique ability let her deposit her soul into Anya's body, giving her near-immortality. Her power also lets her communicate with C.C. telepathically, and notes she may have been able to return to her body if it were kept intact.

Eliza Liechtenstein

Eliza Liechtenstein

6. Invisibility

User: Elisa Liechtenstein
Description: Renders herself and objects invisible.

Elisa only appears in light novel Fragments of the Mosaic, but still bears an awesome power that makes herself translucent. She can also make objects disappear, but overuse caused her ability to become permanently active, showcasing the dangers of Geass.

Charles's Geass

Charles's Geass

5. Memory Alteration

User: Charles zi Britannia
Description: Rewrites and suppresses memories.

Lelouch's father wields a powerful Geass that requires eye contact, but overwrites the memories of those affected, effectively making them believe whatever Charles wants them to. This can even make them forget about their own Geass, as shown when Lelouch is affected between seasons 1 and 2.

Rolo's Geass

Rolo's Geass

4. Seal of Absolute Suspension

User: Rolo Lamperouge
Description: Freezes time for any affected

Technically, Rolo's Geass doesn't actually stop time, but the perception of time. So it's useless against objects (like bullets), but can stop any living being in their tracks, making them easy pickings for Rolo to dispatch or escape from. He can't use the effect for long since it stops his heart, but even a few seconds can easily handle most threats.

Shamna in Lelouch of the Resurrection

3. Failed One

User: Shamna
Description: Sends herself back 6 hours when she dies.

Shamna claims to have visions of the future, but that's not quite accurate; instead, she goes back 6 hours whenever she dies, providing "visions" of what's to come. This makes her a cunning strategist who knows your plan even before you do.

Lorenzo's Geass

Lorenzo's Geass

2. Illusion

User: Lorenzo il Soresi
Description: Make victims experience any illusion.

Seen in spinoff Renya of Darkness, Lorenzo's limits aren't known, but his illusions seem both versatile and effective. He's known to use horrifying ones to easily interrogate foes, letting him quickly obtain crucial information.

Lelouch's Geass

Lelouch's Geass

1. Power of Absolute Obedience

User: Lelouch vi Britannia, Marrybell mel Britannia
Description: Victim obeys any command.

Lelouch's infamous power is arguably the best in the series: when used, anyone he makes eye contact with has to do what he says. Combined with his cunning mind, Lelouch can set traps ahead of time, and victims don't remember being commanded.

Now, this Geass can only affect each person once, so Lelouch must think carefully about when and what to do with it, but it's still an amazing power that also makes him almost untouchable in combat—he can (and has) simply commanded enemy troops to commit suicide.

Other Geass Powers in "Code Geass"

Between the main series and its films and spinoffs, we've seen a variety of Geass powers, some narrowly missing the cut. Of course, Geass are often as much a curse as a blessing (like C.C.'s former ability that made people love her). Hopefully we'll encounter more in future projects, but for now, vote for your favorite and I'll see you at our next anime countdown!
