I am in awe! Who would have thought that this anime show with the weird name—Banana Fish—would take 2018 by storm? There’s no denying it. Banana Fish is one of the best anime of 2018. Its story, its themes, its realism, its staging, and its overall quality—everything about it is an astounding work of art!

Since Banana Fish is such an exceptional show, there’s no helping but to desire more. Thus, I’m recommending five other titles in lieu of it. I’m assuming that you have already watched Banana Fish. In that case, the shows listed here will unquestionably satiate your yearning.

Anime Similar to Banana Fish:

  1. 91 Days
  2. Durarara!!
  3. Baccano!
  4. Monster
  5. Joker Game

1. 91 Days

It would be a disgrace if I didn’t put 91 Days here in this list. Why you ask? It’s because in the recent times, this show comes closest to the totality of Banana Fish.

Anime shows like Banana Fish and 91 Days are smashingly rare. They are rare in such a way that they portray narratives that are quite near the boundaries of reality, and present themes that are neither overblown nor watered down. These shows are serious. They tackle issues that really need to be talked about. At their cores, these shows are what you could consider as mature and honest.

91 Days, unsurprisingly, is a tale of revenge. Astonishingly, it’s not just any vengeance story. It’s a clever narrative with copious amounts of action and wit. Well, with the mafia-and-gang theme involved, it’s the least we should expect.

This show even has drama and some light humor. Despite that, it stays true to its path. 91 Days addresses what it wants to address effectively and lowers the curtains marvelously that the audience have no choice but to shed a tear or two. This show may not be for everyone, but you should watch it if you don’t want to miss an exalting work of art.

2. Durarara!!

If you’re looking for anime shows with gangs, then I’ll give you one. I present to you—Durarara!!

Durarara!!’ may not be in exact correspondence with Banana Fish, but in the history of anime, it’s one of the most recommended shows when it comes to having gangs, goons, and street action as its elements. I dare say that ‘Durarara!!’ is the most surreal anime listed here.

A headless motorcyclist, a monstrously strong bartender, a cult-like gang that propagates with the slash of a blade, some ordinary people that are not so ordinary at all—name it! This show is supernatural at its kernel. But, it’s still one of the best!

Durarara!!’ has an abundance of nerve-racking action and mind-boggling twists. Not to mention, it’s storytelling is also quite rousing and electrifying. I think I’ve said enough. Now it’s your time to see for yourself!

3. Baccano!

I just mentioned ‘Durarara!!’, right? Now, I’ll complete the supernatural line-up by mentioning ‘Baccano!’ as well!

Unlike ‘Durarara!!’, ‘Baccano!’ is much closer to Banana Fish although not quite. But before I begin explaining, I would like to point out that both ‘Durarara!!’ and ‘Baccano!’ were created by the same author. Okay, let’s start!

Baccano!’ is an anime that is also laden with the mafia-and-gang theme and elements. Although it’s a denizen of the supernatural genre, it doesn’t really stray too far from reality. In fact, the scenarios that are played within surprisingly feels grounded and logical. That is the charm of this show!

If you’re head over heels in love with peculiar gangs, brazen mafia members, exhilarating combat, and flashy gunfights, then ‘Baccano!’ will surely blow you away!

4. Monster

Oh look, an old anime! But why exactly is it here? Well, lend me your ears for a second. Monster may be around 2 decades old already, but it’s a true masterpiece!

I made a realization. I realized that anime shows like Banana Fish were more plentiful and prominent in the past. I’m not so sure myself, but that seems to be the reality. Honest and mature anime shows have dwindled over the recent years. Nowadays, everything is either too sensualized or too superficial.

One of the best shows from the past that I can recommend to you is Monster. It is mind-blowing as it is legendary. While it doesn’t focus much on action, it is heavy on mystery and canniness. Mind you, this show is on the same level as Banana Fish, if not greater.

I urge you to witness the brilliance of Monster! This is a work of art that genuinely deserves your attention. This is a show that is truly old but gold.

5. Joker Game

Ladies and gentlemen, all bets are off the table! Joker Game is definitely no joke. If you’re loco over the themes of spying and espionage, then this is the anime to watch!

Just like Banana Fish, Joker Game isn’t as mundane as many other shows. It tackles a real-world subject through a realistic scope. Every episode of Joker Game is well-thought and thoroughly executed. This show is so thrilling I just couldn’t get enough of it. Honestly, it was a torture for me to wait a whole week just to watch every succeeding episode.

Since Joker Game is best of its kind, you definitely should catch its drift. There’s not a lot of anime possessing the themes of spying and espionage, so this is your chance. I dare say that this show is not just the best of its kind, but also one of a kind!

What are you going to watch next?
