Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple Series

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple is just one among many underrated anime shows, despite offering the complete package. Its story revolves around a young boy’s quest to find true strength and overcome obstacles, all while harnessing his martial arts skills. Kenichi Shirahama, his girlfriend Miu Furinji, and masters Hayato Furinji, Shio Sakaki, Apachai Hopachai, Shigure Kosaka, Kensei Ma, and Akisame Koetsuji are the main protagonists of the series.

Do you know the story of Kenichi? If you are not convinced this anime show is worthy of your time, browse through this list of the 10 best Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple characters and you’ll surely change your mind. Kenichi and the gang will not only satisfy your hunger for intense anime action, but for romance, friendship, loyalty, trust, fatherhood, perseverance in pursuing dreams, changing for the better, and many other aspects!

10. Ikki Takeda

Ikki Takeda was one of the strongest enemies Kenichi faced. During their first encounter, Ikki could have easily grabbed the victory if he'd fought seriously. But then again, his loss against Kenichi gave him hope. Kenichi introduced Ikki to his master Akisame, who's famous in traditional and alternative medicine across the country. Akisame claimed he could totally heal Ikki’s left arm so he could chase his long-time dream of becoming a professional boxer.

Ikki was amazed by the possibilities and filled with excitement after achieving noticeable results. This marked the start of the true friendship he shared with Kenichi. He often saved Kenichi in times of despair. Kenichi, in return, assured him Ragnarok wouldn’t be a hindrance as he tried to reach his life goals.

9. Natsu Tanimoto

Natsu Tanimoto was first introduced as the President of Kenichi’s drama club at school. To Kenichi’s surprise, he turned out to be one of Ragnarok’s generals. Natsu practices Chinese martial arts taught by Kensei Ma’s brother. During his fight against Kenichi, he realized martial arts isn't just a tool to hurt and dominate people. He was amazed by Kenichi’s bond with his masters, which helped encourage him to train once more.

After losing, Natsu decided to leave Ragnarok and follow a path of righteousness. Thanks to Kenichi, he now had a glimpse of what true strength really means. Whether he'll turn out to be an ally or foe in the near future is not certain. What I’m sure about is that Natsu Tanimoto has the potential to be among the greatest martial artists the world's ever known.

8. Akisame Koetsuji

Among Kenichi’s masters, Akisame Koetsuji is the one who really has what it takes to teach. He was the first to accept Kenichi as a disciple. At first, his main goal was simply to help the little kid gain enough stamina and strength to survive a brutal fight.

As Kenichi progressed, Akisame realized the boy had the heart to become a great martial artist. He always emphasized that brute strength is not a must in martial arts. What you really need is a calm mind, a well-trained body, and most importantly, a heart that never gives up and is willing to fight for what's right.

7. Kensei Ma

There's a trend in anime shows to include a pervert, and Kensei Ma embraces such a role. Kensei might look pale and weak, but don’t be fooled—he is a master of Chinese martial arts. His goofy moves could turn the battle’s tide in an instant, a fact proven by Kenichi himself in a majority of his fights. Kensei considers Kenichi to be his own son. The funny part is how they bond not only in martial arts but also in how to peek at the ladies. Their favorite subject is Miu, but the two of them usually end up failing in their perverted plans.

6. Shigure Kosaka

Shigure Kosaka is a former female ninja who has mastered the arts of spying and using all sorts of weapons. She's probably the most dangerous among the masters since she seems to have killed countless individuals in her previous life. This is evident in how she handles danger calmly and considers death something normal, which is, of course, a rarer trait in stereotypically female characters.

She was curious about Kenichi from the start. Shigure usually peeked in during Kenichi’s sparring sessions and made sure the disciple was alright. Eventually, she came to care for Kenichi like an older sister. Shigure Kosaka may seem mean and aloof, but I’m certain deep inside her boyish personality is a sister-like heart. She would do everything to keep her younger brother Kenichi away from harm.

5. Apachai Hopachai

Apachai Hopachai is a ferocious Muay Thai fighter. He mastered his martial arts skills through rigorous training. Restraint is not in his dictionary, as he pours 100 percent into every kick and punch he throws. It became natural to him after being in the ring for many years where his life was at stake in every fight.

Apachai is very eager to teach Kenichi, but their sparring often ends up in disaster. Kenichi being knocked out half-dead by Apachai’s punch became a common sight in the Dojo. Apachai worked hard on learning how to control his rage. His aim is to teach Kenichi the secrets of Muay Thai without killing him in the process. It may sound funny, but Apachai is very serious about it. He's never had a single disciple before, so he's working double-time to be the master Kenichi needs.

4. Shio Sakaki

Shio Sakaki is a karate master who was reluctant at first about teaching Kenichi. Eventually, he saw Kenichi’s eagerness and pure heart, which convinced him to share his art with the little weak boy. He often said discouraging words to Kenichi, but it didn't mean he cared less about his only pupil.

Some rumors say Shio’s karate is second to none and he could easily defeat even someone twice his size without hardly lifting a finger. He might be a stubborn master, but Shio is my personal favorite. I liked the way he hid his feelings toward his only disciple. He cared for Kenichi like a big brother. So much, in fact, he didn't have to think twice about risking his life to save the little boy who allowed him to experience becoming a master.

3. Hayato Furinji

Hayato Furinji is the Ryozanpaku Dojo’s master. He's a master in karate and other martial arts techniques. As a fighter, he was known across the globe to be unbeatable. Hayato's strong enough to send someone flying by merely using his aura. Rumors say no one managed to survive after receiving the full power attack of Hayato Furinji.

As a grandfather, Hayato Furinji is very protective. Despite knowing how hard it is to train karate, he set aside all his care for Miu and taught her martial arts so she could at least defend herself against imminent danger. To see his grandchild suffer through her training courses broke his heart, yet he endured, believing protecting Miu should be his main priority.

2. Miu Furinji

Miu Furinji is the granddaughter of Hayato Furinji, a martial artist known worldwide for his immense power and flawless karate technique. She met Kenichi Shirahama after transferring to a new school. She's a very pretty woman, so several men noticed and had a crush on her, including Kenichi. Their bond went deeper when Kenichi tried to save her from a group of thugs.

What Kenichi didn't know is Miu is a karate expert after being trained by her grandfather at a very young age. Miu admired Kenichi’s passion for helping the weak, so she introduced him to their dojo. Though eager to be strong, Kenichi was hesitant to undergo rigorous training to achieve such a goal, but Miu was always there to provide encouragement. He wants to be stronger and not just a protector of the weak, but also hopes to impress Miu. She, on the other hand, may not need Kenichi’s protection, but it’s evident she's slowly falling for the weak man with a very big heart.

1. Kenichi Shirahama

Kenichi Shirahama dreamed of becoming a hero and protecting everyone dear to him. However, he initially lacked the courage and strength to do so. In fact, he was bullied during his junior high years and expected the same fate to follow him when he reached high school. Everything changed when he met Miu Furinji, a gorgeous transfer student who knows a lot about karate. Kenichi tried to rescue her from a group of thugs but ended up being saved by Miu instead.

Kenichi may lack innate talent in fighting, but he definitely has heart and would do anything to save Miu or anyone else he considers a friend. In dire situations, Kenichi forgets about his weaknesses and fears. He also can’t resist helping someone who's been bullied because he remembers how terrible it felt. Kenichi decided to become a disciple of the Ryozanpaku Dojo and train with the group of masters so he could finally protect the oppressed.

Is the Show Called History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi or Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple?

Using the Hepburn romanization of Japanese, you get the title History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi. However, the more formally used English name for the series is Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple.

While both refer to the series overall, I've opted to use the English name throughout this article. But true fans of the series should know what you're talking about with the usage of either name!

Kenichi's story has been both a manga series and an anime TV show. If you're familiar with one, why not check out the other as well!
