Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.

In recent times, not one year has passed without a new title from the school genre. But did 2017 justify the nobility of the genre?

The answer for that is a resounding yes!

Following the trend of recent years, the school genre continued to flourish! It is not really surprising, however, because the genre itself is very versatile. It can take the form of all the other genres in anime. That being said, it wasn’t difficult to fetch all the titles and determine which among them are noteworthy.

Listed here are the five best school anime of 2017! All of them are definitely exceptional and commendable. Nevertheless, I am open to other suggestions. Just add them on the comments section for everyone to see.

1. Aho Girl
2. Boku no Hero Academia (Season 2)

1. Aho Girl

I firmly believe that Aho Girl is the funniest school anime of 2017. Although its scenes don’t exclusively take place inside the school, most scenes do! A majority of the characters are also students. But enough of the trivialities! Let’s focus on how great this is as an anime.

First, Aho Girl is extremely funny! Second, it is very idiotic—in a good way, that is! After all, the meaning of “Aho” is “Stupid.” Lastly, did I ever say it’s funny? Oh, I already did! But I just can’t emphasize enough how humorous it is. It is very important that you watch it!

Personally, I almost dropped this show after I watched its first episode. I thought it was plain stupid and weird. But I was wrong! Well, partly. While it is actually stupid, it is also outrageously hilarious! The first episode was just the “getting-used-to” part, as well as the warm-up. Nothing prepared me for what was coming. In the end, my abdominal muscles were totally trained from all the laughing. I am convinced that Aho Girl is a grenade that is made of pure laughing gas.

2. Boku no Hero Academia (Season 2)

Everyone should know Boku no Hero Academia by now. It is, after all, one of the best shounen anime of all time! As a shounen anime, it is very mainstream and delightfully good. It is basically about students vying to become full-fledged heroes. They are the hope of the future. They are the fledgling heroes who will defend the world from villains and save those who are in trouble.

As proven by it in 2016, Boku no Hero Academia was a success! Hence, many people anticipated its second season with all their might! Come 2017, it appeared just like All Might, saying: “It’s fine now. Why? Because I am here!”

This anime surpasses all the limits! All its aspects are spectacular! Its visuals, sounds, animation, action, drama, lessons, and more—it’s a complete package! Trust me, only a villain will have the tenacity to hate this show. You’re not a villain, right?

Little Witch Academia

3. Little Witch Academia

Garnering massive ratings and high appraisals in 2017, Little Witch Academia sure enough is magical! It tells the story of a young girl who wishes to become a great witch. Her idol, the witch Shiny Chariot, is her greatest inspiration. And so, despite not having the blood of a true-blue witch, Atsuko will push forward and never give up on becoming a resplendent witch. But first, she must enter and attend Luna Nova Academy and learn all the tenets of magic from scratch!

Little Witch Academia is not your regular magic and school anime! It is so different from the norm that I consider it phantasmagorical. To those who don’t know what phantasmagorical means, it just means surreal. I used the fancier term because this show is flamboyant like that! Its world is mesmerizing. The themes that it explores are truly intriguing and sensational. Even the plot itself is very unique and fascinating.

I have no complaints about Little Witch Academia. It gripped me as if it enchanted me with a charm spell. That explains why I cannot hold back on the praises. I assure you, this is a show that will never leave any regrets in you.

Shokugeki no Soma (Season 3)

4. Shokugeki no Soma (Season 3)

There’s no stopping Shokugeki no Soma’s kitchen rampage! Having released its third season in 2017, it coerced a lot of people to mindlessly drool and experience foodgasms once again! And I’m not even exaggerating!

Shokugeki no Soma is probably the best cooking anime in existence! Somehow, it makes me want to attend Totsuki Culinary Academy just to experience a whole new universe of flavors. I’ll probably fail miserably in cooking, but what I want is to witness all the scrumptious food being prepared and taste them all!

This is a truly unique and sensational show. Not watching it is a mortal sin! But mind you, if you do watch it, then expect to experience a foodgasmic adventure that will stimulate all of your senses.

Tsuki ga Kirei

5. Tsuki ga Kirei

If a purely “school” anime from 2017 is what you are looking for, then Tsuki ga Kirei is just the anime show for you! Its story: Two middle school students unexpectedly meet at school and fluttery feelings suddenly sprout between them. Sounds simple and straightforward, right? Well, indeed it is! And this beautiful simplicity is what Tsuki ga Kirei excels at.

In this anime, there are no overarching story-lines. There are also no complex plot elements. It is pure as it is realistic. Everything in this show feels real. From the main couple to their classmates, friends, and parents, they all convey emotions and feelings as if they actually exist in a concrete place somewhere in this world. This is as real as it can get for a school anime!

As for the visual, sound, and execution aspects of Tsuki ga Kirei, they were all stunningly created. They combine so well with the story that it’s almost a crime not to marvel at the masterful presentation. If you’re looking for sudden twists, unnatural feats, or inorganic escalations, then this is not for you. But if you’re in for a refreshing breath of life, simple love, and hyperrealisitic moments, then this anime will surprise and fully captivate you.
