Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.

Did 2017 succeed in presenting a plethora of remarkable romance anime?

Not quite.

Even so, 2017 did manage to pull-off the stunt of injecting a stream of titles that possessed unusual premises and unique romantic formulas.

In a romantic relationship, there’s the inescapable transmutation of falling in love and falling out of love. Others may use the terms “love” and “hate,” but those are just the two sides of the same coin. The same concepts apply to the romance genre in anime. You have the freedom to either fall in love or brim with hate.

2017 was quite the peculiar year for romance anime. Nevertheless, it was a year that dared to venture into the unknown and be audacious. As a result, the titles that came out were either a hit or a miss. Luckily, there were shows that demonstrated authority and particularity despite the ever-increasing difficulty of standing out in a very competitive environment.

Listed here are five of the best romance anime of 2017. Most of them are not free from blunder. You could easily pick nits with them if you want. But what’s essential is that they stood out. Now, if you have other titles in mind that you think deserve being mentioned, then feel free to add them in the comments.

The 5 Best Romance Anime of 2017
1. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (Kiss Him, Not Me!)
2. Tsuredure Children
3. Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish)
4. Masamune-kun no Revenge (Masamune-kun’s Revenge)
5. Net-juu no Susume (Recovery of an MMO Junkie)

1. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (Kiss Him, Not Me!)

If this show’s title Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (translating as Kiss Him, Not Me!) doesn’t automatically register as a romance anime to you, then rest assured that you are not to blame. But that’s only because this show is way more than just a romance anime! For a tiny bit of what you should expect, this show is as laughable as a decent comedy anime and also clearly a new favorite pick for fans of the reverse harem genre.

Watashi ga Motete Dousunda tells the story of a chubby high school girl who loses weight after grieving the death of her favorite anime character. As a result, she becomes super attractive and immediately gains a harem of her own. But there’s a problem: she’s a fujoshi—a person who’s obsessive about boys’ love and yaoi. I’m sure you can imagine what happens next!

While Watashi ga Motete Dousunda indeed is not one of the best romance anime of all time, it sure is one of the best romance anime of 2017. It might be extremely cheesy, or even stupid, but it definitely is not a pushover. It is highly entertaining, it is adorable, but most of all, it is completely engaging!

2. Tsuredure Children

Here’s a high school romance anime that has the potential to topple all the other titles from the romance genre—Tsuredure Children! I know that what I’ve said is a stretch and definitely far-fetch, but it is also true that Tsuredure Children does not only presents a singular and straightforward love story between one romantic couple. As a matter of fact, it presents multiple pairs of lovers spread evenly among each of its episodes. Remember what I said about this show being the romance anime that has the potential to topple all the other titles from the romance genre? Well, the only reason for that is this show is not just an anime comprising a single, unique love story but a lot of them!

Love it or hate it, what you think doesn’t really matter for this anime! In Tsuredure Children, there are lots of romantic high school stories to choose from. If you love one of the stories, then good for you! If you hate one of them, then you can move on to the next. What’s reassuring is that each episode is concise and short, and also wholly different from the others. That means you can easily move on to the next story without anything holding you back. Predictably, that’s what makes this anime truly charming and special.

3. Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish)

This is the story of two peculiar lovers. Both seemingly form a perfect partnership, but deep down, everything is just a convenient lie. In reality, both lovers don’t really love one another. Their hearts belong to other people—individuals who will never love them back!

If what you desire is a murky romantic formula that you have never experienced before, then Kuzu no Honkai is the anime for you to watch. What sets it apart from the others is that it doesn’t try to be cheesy or cute. Truth be told, some parts of it can get really uncomfortable and awkward. Still, it has a very unique concept. It develops really well and sees to it that you, as the viewer, drowns in a sea of emotion that comes really close to reality.

Kuzu no Honkai is without doubt not for everyone. But if you’re in for a fresh spectacle, then there’s no one stopping you from experiencing this emotional wreck of a show.

4. Masamune-kun no Revenge (Masamune-kun’s Revenge)

The word “revenge” may be in the title but don’t jump into conclusions just yet. Make no doubt that this anime is not an associate of the action, thriller, and horror departments. As grisly as it may sound like, Masamune-kun no Revenge is sure enough a romance anime. Furthermore, it’s a romantic comedy!

The main hero of the show, Masamune-kun, used to be a fatty. As a matter of fact, he was branded as “Pig’s Foot” by his childhood crush the moment he tried confessing his feelings for her. Bushed from the humiliation, he worked hard to slim down and become more attractive. He successfully managed to pull it off, but at the cost of being a bit egotistical and narcissistic.

Now in high school, Masamune-kun stumbles upon the girl who gave him the hideous nickname “Pig’s Foot”. Finally, the chance to exact his sweet revenge upon the girl, who’s now known as the Cruel Princess, has come! And the plan is: “Make her fall in love with him and ultimately dump her in the most fascinating way.” This is Masamune-kun’s revenge.

Masamune-kun’s revenge plan may be heinous, but it’s all actually just a plan. He may be headstrong and determined, but so is the Cruel Princess. Both of them blend so well with their dynamics. Honestly, they’re both so similar that they’re perfect for each another! As to how everything pans out, that’s all up for you to discover.

Masamune-kun no Revenge’s good point is that it is visually pleasing. Its musicality is nothing to sneeze at as well. While it does possess some degree of genericism and an issue of overused tropes, it still is interesting and very entertaining. Overall, this show may be gem in the rough; but for 2017 standards, it is one of the best!

5. Net-juu no Susume (Recovery of an MMO Junkie)

It all started out as a game. Then slowly, everything turned into something else! This is the story of a 30-year-old woman who only wanted to seek refuge in a world free from all the complications of life—the online world—only to discover that the very sanctuary she managed to escape to will soon merge with her own offline reality and bring her a future that she never would have expected in her life.

As unusual as it is to have adult characters starring in a fluffy romance anime, Net-juu no Susume manages to work out its very own touch of magic. With every event unfolding one after another, one could only say: “This anime is so fresh. It is nothing like I have ever seen before.” Actually, this show is something that strikes really close to home. The premise might seem really weird at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll inevitably come to discover that it is something that you just can’t help but love. Something like that can’t be a bad thing, right?

Net-juu no Susume is one of the best anime of 2017 that has the most well-developed characters. Each episode, the characters grow and you get progressively get fond of them. They’re so relatable that you actually feel that you are living alongside them. This anime is so simple yet very refreshing. It is one that you would most definitely enjoy and certainly exceed your expectations.
