Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.
No matter what year, the harem genre in anime never runs dry! That is why it is not surprising that the genre itself clamors in both popularity and infamy. Most shows from the said genre are mediocre at best. Some are good, but some are so bad they’re good! Let’s not delve much into the contradictions now. We’re here to enjoy the genre for it truly is!
As usual, I’m here to report about the best shows that 2018 had to offer! I’ve picked five titles that I think are the premier representations of the aforementioned year. So, ready or not, here they come to pleasure you silly!

- High School DxD Hero

- Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (How Not to Summon a Demon Lord)
- Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san (Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs)
1. Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku (Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody)
In the recent years, the anime shows from the harem genre have proven to be quite mediocre, annoying, and tasteless. Why? That’s because most titles from the said genre insists on repeating the same tropes, elements, and styles. Fortunately, this show—Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku—is different on a whole new level!
Unlike other harem anime shows, Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku is refreshing and invigorating. Starting from the main male character to the gaggle of female side characters, mostly everyone is nice and pleasant in this show. Don’t get tricked by the title. Trust me, this show isn’t as grim as its title sounds. In fact, it’s wholly capable of stimulating the senses without the sensation of feeling weary or jaded.
Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku is actually a show that is riddled with magnificent components born the harem, isekai, and fantasy genres. If you just want to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in some soothing yet compelling entertainment, then this show is for you!
2. High School DxD Hero
As one of the most popular harem anime of all time, High School DxD makes a much-anticipated 2018 return for its fourth season in the form of—High School DxD Hero!
I don’t think there’s a need for me to elaborate on what High School DxD Hero is or why it is highly acclaimed all over the world. Come on, it’s “the” High School DxD. It’s the anime with the glorious collection of beauties and titillating fan service. Mind you, this show actually has a plot. Add in the serious comedy, drama, romance, and action, and you’ve got a really sensational show to feast upon!
With everything said, it’s a no-brainer that everyone loving the genre in question must catch the drift of this show. However, if you haven’t watched the previous seasons of High School DxD yet, then I urge you to watch those first before watching this one.
3. Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria (The Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of Einherjar)
Amidst all the hate surrounding Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria, here I am promoting it as one of the best harem anime of 2018. Are you puzzled? Well, let me explain.
Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria suffers from lazy writing and lazy animation. Its faults are plain as daylight especially if one has discerning eyes. However, the faults and imperfections of this anime are nothing new. They’re to be expected and anticipated. As a matter of fact, I don’t really hate this anime as much as many critics do. It’s average if I must say so because it did entertain me quite a bit.
Even though it’s true that Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria is a total mess, I never really thought of it as boring. I must say that it’s pretty amusing. It throws many tropes and cliches around, desperately struggling to stay true to its essence. It’s as if this show is actually vying to become one of the worst anime of its genre assemblage.
Is it just me or am I just overthinking things? Well, if Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria was indeed trying to intentionally look bad, then it succeeded! It’s the best of the worst, and the worst of the best. I am aware that my review of this show is contradictory in nature, but it might as well be a result of being influenced by this show’s messiness and indolence.
4. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (How Not to Summon a Demon Lord)
As far as anime shows of the genre in question go, Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu is a grand sight to behold. Personally, I think it’s on the above-average part of the spectrum when it comes to fan service and plot, if you know what I mean.
Although Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu doesn’t differ much from its insufferable peers, it does have an easy-to-follow yet rousing plot, well-developed characters, and brilliant pieces of memorable moments. Think of it this way: this anime is like Overlord but with a main character roaming the free world, immersing in the sights and sounds, and tagging along a myriad of busty booties to boot! The fan service in this one is extremely high—something that is certain to be enjoyed by loyal fans of the genre all over the world.
I won’t tell much as to spoil, but I’ll say that there are quite some trinkets of stimulating instances in this show. Overall, it’s not that great but also not that bad, which means it’s in the middle. It’s either you like it or you don’t. There’s nothing I can do but leave the verdict in your hands!
5. Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san (Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs)
In the world of anime, there seems to be an unspoken rule that each and every show must have a bath, hot spring, or beach scene. This is especially true for anime shows that are chiefly at home in the harem department. So, rejoice! 2018 has presented an anime with the hot spring setting as its centerpiece. It’s title is none other than—Yuragi sou no Yuuna-san (otherwise known as Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs)!
Yuragi sou no Yuuna-san is an exceptional eye candy! Its visuals are stunning and delightful. Not to mention, its animation and characters are flawless. There’s no helping but to ogle as if your eyes are permanently glued to the screen.
As for the story of Yuragi sou no Yuuna-san, it’s predictable yet sufficient in my book. I found it enjoyable to the greatest extent. I’m certain that many fans of the genre in question would succumb to the pleasure that this anime offers. If every other anime title that presents a bath, hot spring, or beach scene can suffice as excellent fan service, then what more if it’s an anime that is principally set in a hot spring locality. Go figure!
