Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.

What was 2017 like for the whole comedy genre in anime?

Was it good? Was it bad? Was it so-so?

Well luckily, 2017 was certainly a good year for comedy anime!

Not only did new seasons of Gintama air in 2017, two other monumentally funny anime shows aired their respective second seasons. Not only that, two new hilarious titles have also joined the fray! Ah, what a time to be alive!

In a short while, I’ll be listing them all here. Or maybe not. As a matter of fact, I’ve already listed them! There are five of them in total. They’re the funniest shows of 2017. You should never miss them for anything. So go on, start the giggling and cackling, and guffaw till your lungs burst with laughter. Don’t worry, your lungs won’t actually get damaged—for laughter is the best medicine!

The 5 Best Comedy Anime of 2017
1. Aho Girl
2. Gintama (Seasons 5 and 6)
3. Himouto! Umaru Chan R (My Two-Faced Little Sister R)
4. Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun)
5. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! (Season 2)
Aho Girl

1. Aho Girl

Do you know what “Aho” means? I’m telling you now, it indicates idiocy and dumbness. Therefore, that means this show is about an idiotic girl. Wow, you must be a genius for figuring that out! But seriously, only a true “Aho” will not watch this show. You might be called an “Aho” either way, but at least you’ll get to have a gaggle of fun. Believe me when I say that picking this up is one of the wisest decision you could ever make in your life.

Spanning 12 minutes—more or so—with each episode, Aho Girl brings on the endless gags one after another. The main character may be ultra dumb, but she’s a genius when it comes to making people laugh. Her nonsense never fails to lead into trouble and whatnot. And then there’s her childhood crush, who always try to knock some some into her but fails miserably each time.

Now that you’ve got the gist of this anime, it’s time for you to join the idiocy. I repeat: “picking this up is one of the wisest decision you could ever make in your life.” Don’t be an “Aho” and let “Aho Girl” do her job in making you laugh like a half-wit.

Gintama (Seasons 5 and 6)

2. Gintama (Seasons 5 and 6)

If by now you still don’t know or heard anything about the legendary comedy anime Gintama, then accept my condolences. Perhaps you’re new to the world of anime? Maybe you’ve been living under a rock this whole time? Oh, I don’t know anymore. There’s absolutely no excuse for you!

I’ll tell you what Gintama is right now, so keep your ears peeled. Gintama is none other than the current holder of the title—best comedy anime of all time! That’s right, it’s the best—and of all time, nonetheless! I guess I don’t have to drag this conversation much longer. All you need to do is watch!

In 2017, Gintama aired its fifth and sixth seasons. There’s no story to follow so just pick a random episode and start from there. Gintama is known throughout the world as the best comedy anime so there’s no shred of doubt about its ability to make people laugh.

Himouto! Umaru Chan R (My Two-Faced Little Sister R)

3. Himouto! Umaru Chan R (My Two-Faced Little Sister R)

Fans of Umaru-chan, rejoice! If you still are unaware by now, Himouto! Umaru-chan aired its second season in the fourth quarter of 2017. And as expected, it didn’t fail to deliver!

Himouto! Umaru-chan R is the kind of comic relief that everyone needs but don’t deserve. Whenever it’s not busy making you laugh on your belly, it is overly engaged with trying to make you smile in glee. This anime’s characters are very relatable as they are all very irresistibly charming. It almost feels like you’re a close friend trying your best not to get carried away with the silliness, yet you still do.

If you’re looking for an innocent slice-of-life show with lots of endearingly comical moments, then Himouto! Umaru-chan R is the show to watch! It’s not only pleasant to eyes and ears, it also tickles your heart and soul with compelling happiness.

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun)

4. Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun)

Soccer? Sports? Who ever said anything about those?! Don’t let this show fool you! While it seems to be some sort of serious, soccer-themed, sports anime, Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun is not exactly what you would expect at first. Through and through, it is astonishingly an anime about a silly clean freak named Aoyama who happens to be a genius in soccer—a sport that’s all about dirt and grime.

Again, I say this: “Don’t focus too much on the sports aspect!” This anime is mostly about fun and jokes! Didn’t I just tell you to we have a main character here who is a clean freak but plays the dirty sport of soccer? How he manages to play and even stand out as a genius is what you have to find out for yourself! In the later episodes, even soccer itself becomes quite irrelevant. Aren’t you dying to find out why?

If you’re worried about the visuals, they’re pretty decent! As for the sound, it’s nothing to be fussy about. Then how about the story? That doesn’t even matter! What I am sure about is that you’ll definitely find your abs aching with all the laughter this show gives out.

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! (Season 2)

5. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! (Season 2)

Now this is what I call a truly explosive year-kick-starter anime! Well, what do you know! KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World (Season 2) aired in the first month of 2017. Not only did it start everyone’s year right back then, it also brought delight that dwelled within everyone for the rest of the year. Now, everyone’s so excited for the next season of the series!

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World isn’t your usual fantasy anime! It is a big joke, per se! Its only goal is make everything wacky and laughable. From each crazy scenario to every peculiar character, everything exists only to deliver a havoc filled with hilarity to the world! If you say that this anime doesn’t make you laugh, then everyone knows for certain that you are lying.

Based on recent memory, I can proudly say that this is one of the best comedy anime ever! That’s right, I repeat: “one of the best comedy anime ever” and not just 2017. If you haven’t watched it, then I suggest you do so quickly before the goddess Aqua decide to smite you with her godly, water-based party tricks.

Which of the titles listed is your favorite 2017 comedy anime?
