The original Ben 10 series was first aired on December 27, 2005. That's nearly two decades ago. Cartoon Network has been milking this epic series with newer versions of the character, so younger generations will grow up with knowledge of Ben 10. But will that be enough?
At some point, they'll want to know how it all began. If you're aware that it started when an alien device did what it did, then you, my friend, are a veteran. However, it's been a while and you might have forgotten a thing or two. So, whether you want to take a trip down memory lane or have no idea which aliens first appeared on Ben 10, this article is for you.
1. Heatblast (Fire)
Heatblast was the first alien Ben 10 transformed into. Originating from the planet Pyros, Heatblast is a flaming human-like alien encrusted with volcanites. He’s from a species we’ve come to know as Pyronite. The word Pyro is derived from the Greek word Pyr which means fire. Often, it is used as a prefix in scientific compounds related to heat or fire.
Many people know Heatblast as the alien with the ability to shoot fire at will. However, he can do much more. For example, the alien can create a fire whirl capable of moving people harmlessly from one place to another. What’s more, he can also use fire to fly. And let’s not forget that when Heatblast gets a cold, he is able to manipulate ice. This gives him the ability to freeze objects instead of setting them on fire.
2. Wildmutt (Agility)
After Acquiring the Omnitrix and nearly razing an entire forest to the ground, Ben was advised to stay put and not mess with the device anymore. However, being the hot-headed boy he was at that time, he continued fooling around with the watch. Out of this, came Wildmutt, an orange sort of untamed hound with huge canine teeth protruding out of its bottom jaw. So Wildmutt became the second alien Ben transformed into. He skipped Heatblast, Stinkfly and XLR8 to get to him on the Omnitrix.
The Wildmutt species are known as Vulpimancers and they originate from the planet Vulpin. Instead of eyes, they have three pairs of gill-like organs that allow them to detect movements. Wildmutt also has heightened reflexes, hearing and smell. He is quite effective in forests as he can use the element of surprise to beat his opponents. His ape-like hands allow him to roam such territories with ease.
3. Diamondhead (Resilience)
Diamondhead is a crystalline being from the planet Petropia. He’s the third alien Ben transformed into in the original series, and using his power, was able to take down Vilgax’s drone. Petropia isn’t just home to the Petrosapiens species like Diamondhead. Within the planet, lies other crystal-like beings and one familiar example is Chromastone, who made his first appearance in Ben 10: Alien force.
Petrosapiens are built to be resilient, their physiology alone attests to this. Diamondhead, for example, is able to take multiple hits and energy projections with little to no damage. In addition to heightened physical resistance and durability, Diamondhead is able to materialize weapons at will from his own body. He can turn his hands into crystal blades or fire crystallized projectiles towards an opponent. Also, when struck with an energy beam, he is able to redirect the energy back to his enemy.
4. XLR8 (Speed)
XLR8 was the alien Ben would turn to for speed. His home planet is known as Kinet, and his species, Kineceleran. XLR8’S enhanced speed also comes with quick thinking. So, he doesn’t just run aimlessly. Sometimes, you’ll see him pause, think, and then execute a plan very quick. He can also use his speed to create a water vortex or tornadoes capable of injuring his opponents.
Speed aside, XLR8 is able to tear through objects using his sharp claws. Although not at the level of the likes of Fourarms, XLR8 also possesses heightened strength. I liked XLR8 for one tiny feature that was, the visor that slid to cover his face. It had a pretty good design and made his helmet look amazing.
5. Grey Matter (Brains)
Grey Matter wasn’t your go to guy when strength was required. He was a Galvan and just four inches tall. However, he was the smartest alien in the Omnitrix. Azmuth, the creator of the Omnitrix, was of the same species. Sometimes, you don’t need to be stronger than your opponent to win, you just need to be smarter.
When Vilgax sent three deadly bounty hunters to retrieve the Omnitrix, it wasn’t Diamondhead who beat them, it was Grey Matter, save for Tetrax who was actually a good guy. Grey Matter was able to do this, one because Ben actually took his time to think for once and two because the alien was tiny and smart enough to trace the hunters’ nerve clusters and paralyze them.
6. Four Arms (Brawn)
Four Arms’ home planet is called Khoros and his species, Tetramand. When muscle was required, he was Ben’s obvious selection. He had, as the name states, four arms and was about twelve feet in height. His jacked-up physique showed just how strong and resilient he was. In the episode titled “Washington BC”, he was able to out-muscle an ancient Mammoth mutated by Dr. Animo.
Four Arms could use his super strength to cause an earthquake by stomping the ground. In addition to that, he could cause a sonic boom by clapping his hands. He was also incredible in hand-to-hand combat. And let’s not forget his ability to jump to great heights.
7. Stinkfly (Flight)
Stinkfly is a Lepidopterran. The species are basically large alien bugs from a planet known as Lepidopterra. Similar to Fourarms, Stinkfly made his first appearance in the episode titled “Washington BC” where he rescued Gwen from Dr. Animo’s mutant parrot. Stinkfly has an unusual body structure. The alien has four eyes which are held by two pairs of cylindrical structures that protrude out of each sides of his head. This allows him to rotate his eyes up to 360 degrees. Stinkfly has two main abilities, flight and slime projection. He also has a tail that can cut through steel.
8. Ripjaws (Water)
From the neck up, Ripjaws resembled a deep-sea anglerfish. The rest of his body was similar to that of a human but with fish-like features such as, scales and fins. Ripjaws was a Piscciss Volann and, being so, allowed Ben to breathe underwater. He was first featured in the episode “The krakken” where he helped the sea monster to retrieve her eggs. In the episode, he showed some of his distinctive abilities like ripping off steel using his teeth and moving at incredible speeds underwater by changing his lower body into a tail. Ripjaws can also expand his mouth to fit in objects within, like he did when carrying the Krakken’s eggs. In the original Ben 10 series, Ripjaws couldn’t stay for long without water. Other weaknesses included, fire and electricity.
9. Upgrade (Tech)
Upgrade was capable of altering his physical form from solid to liquid with relative ease. This ability came in handy in battle as he could reshape his body to dodge attacks. The same power allowed him to take control of any technological object and use its capabilities to his advantage. As the name states, Upgrade could not only possess but also enhance these objects.
When is solid state, Upgrade took the shape of a human-like alien with gigantic hands reaching all the way to his legs. For eyes, he had a circular green structure which lit up every time he spoke. We first saw him in the episode “Permanent Retirement” where he merged with a vehicle to stop two thieves from vandalizing and stealing from an ATM machine.
10. Ghostfreak (Invisibility)
Ghostfreak comes from the planet, Anur Phaetos. He’s a sample acquired from an Ectonurite species called Zs’Skayr. Ghostfreak was different from the other aliens in the Omnitrix, in that, he was conscious. As Zs’Skayr mentioned in the episode “Ghostfreaked out”, an Ectonurite consiousness was capable of existing even in a few strands of DNA. So, the alien was trapped within the Omnitrix.
Ghostfreak was a very powerful alien because he could turn invisible, fly, pass through objects and possess people. The first time Ben used him was in the episode “Permanent Retirement” so he could get out of Aunt Vera’s house unseen. Ghostfreak could also scare people to the point of near shock paralysis and induce a shivery feeling within people as he did with Gwen.
