The 10 Most Psychotic Anime Characters Ever

Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.

The most insane characters ever.

The most insane characters ever.

Some of the most developed and memorable characters in anime are the ones who have lost their sanity. Their stories on how they became this way can be very captivating.

If you fancy these personalities and want more, than your search is over! I've made a list of 10 characters who are the dictionary definition of psycho. Get ready to meet the most unstable minds in anime!

10 Most Insane Anime Characters

10. Shuu Tsukiyama (Tokyo Ghoul)

9. Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)

8. Shou Tucker (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

7. Kumagawa Misogi (Medaka Box)

6. Yagami Light (Death Note)

5. Lucy (Elfen Lied)

4. Hibana Daida (Deadman Wonderland)

3. Gasai Yuno (Mirai Nikki)

2. Sonozaki Shion (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni)

1. Johan Liebert (Monster)

10 - Shuu Tsukiyama (Tokyo Ghoul)

Shuu Tsukiyama

Shuu Tsukiyama

Très bien! Fortissimo! Shuu Tsukiyama is here to hog the number 10 spot! Eat or be eaten!

This guy is a definite nutcase! At first glance, he seems to be elegant, fashionable, and proper. Under all the formalities, he’s a real psycho! He regards himself as a high-class predator, being a ghoul and all. He’s on the search for the finest food, which means he dines on both humans and other ghouls. He is pretty obsessive in this regard. The image above has him sniffing a blood-soaked handkerchief.

9. Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)

Oh dear! Clowns are quite creepy! Now add a pinch (or more) of murderous intent and a perverse outlook and you’ve got Hisoka! One thing’s for sure, nothing good can come out of any situation with him around!

From the very start of Hunter x Hunter, Hisoka has been a major threat. His visage is that of a clown, and he’s also quite unstable. He lusts for strong opponents as well as children (although this is only implied), which makes him quite disturbing. Mind you, he’s super strong and powerful, which just makes him more dangerous! All these traits combined make him a big problem.

8 - Shou Tucker (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Shou Tucker

Shou Tucker

Shou Tucker, the Sewing Life Alchemist, paves his way in at number eight. With the nature of this list, you know it's not because of his intellectual mind and academic achievements!

He is not just one of the craziest characters, but also one of the most hated. If you know what he did, it’ll churn your stomach inside out. It all started when he presented his masterpiece—a creature that can speak like a human. Well, unbeknownst to others, the creature was actually his own wife! She was cruelly and forcibly merged with an animal—a chimera! Two years later, he did the same thing to his very own daughter and the family dog, all because he was desperate for results! For these actions, Shou Tucker is considered an unforgivable madman to fans.

7 - Kumagawa Misogi (Medaka Box)

Kumagawa Misogi

Kumagawa Misogi

Aww, just look at that young man with eyes full of wonder and a carefree smile. No way could he be crazy. But he very much is! It's the biggest loser of them all, Kumagawa Misogi!

I really mean it when I say loser. Ever since he was born, the odds have always been against him. He never wins a satisfying victory as he always miserably loses. This is the reason why he became so twisted and insane! It also made him grow powerful over time.

To highlight his insanity, he ripped off the face of a girl just to test if his love for her was just superficial (Don't worry, she was immortal.) At one time, he seriously considered killing off all human life on the planet, himself included. He spends his daily life spreading misery as if it was all normal and mundane. In addition, he has the power to hide his presence and create objects with his imagination. All of this makes him one of the more monstrous figures in anime.

6. Yagami Light (Death Note)

Yagami Light

Yagami Light

The infamous Light Yagami, AKA Kira, is number six with his own brand of justice and the Death Note. Okay, I’ll tell you the truth! He threatened me to put his name on this list. If not, he’ll put mine in the Death Note!

Light Yagami was just a normal high school student until he came upon the Death Note. It is a notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it. When he got a hold of this, he went mad with power.

Light started to believe that he was the embodiment of justice as well as a god! One flick of a pen was all that was needed to give any criminal a death sentence. He eventually started killing anyone that opposed him.

5 - Lucy (Elfen Lied)

From the show that shocked and traumatized unsuspecting viewers in its first minutes, the diclonius Lucy makes the list for her broken mind caused by despair.

A diclonius is a mysterious creature that has tremendous psychic power in the form of invisible hands that could grab and cut anything at the atomic level. They’re very dangerous creatures that society has kept hidden to protect humanity. Lucy is one of these creatures, and she’s out for vengeance!

She experienced a very traumatic and cruel past. One event included her classmates killing her puppy. I won’t go into many details because that would spoil everything! Just know that life for Lucy was even worse than usual for her species. This is how she became so broken, twisted, and murderous.

4 - Hibana Daida (Deadman Wonderland)

Hibana Daida

Hibana Daida

Don’t ever try to mess with this young lady! She might be just a child, but her mental state is very far from normal. Monstrous strength, abnormal mindset, an inclination to torture, and the capacity to kill—Hibana Daida might just be your worst nightmare if you ever cross her path!

From a very young age, she had been the subject of torture and abuse by her equally unstable mother. This was done to instill in her the qualities of a prim and proper lady. This all ended up damaging her psyche. As a matter of fact, she tried to instill manners in her classmates. To the point of slaughtering them!

Now, she works as an undertaker wielding an enormous sword. Her job now is to torture prisoners who act foolish and improper before ultimately slaughtering them. Just so you know, this little girl knows quite a lot of methods to torture prisoners.

3 - Gasai Yuno (Mirai Nikki)

Gasai Yuno

Gasai Yuno

Gasai Yuno could be the prettiest and sweetest girlfriend one could ever have. But there’s a catch! She’s actually broken deep inside.

She follows protagonist Yukiteru around as a rabid stalker. She’ll kill anyone who hinders her in her quest for affection. Even Yukiteru is scared of her!

Her deadly obsession for our hero is not even the worst thing about her. She has the ability to transcend both space and time. Needless to say, she has amusing methods to get her man.

2 - Sonozaki Shion (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni)

Sonozaki Shion

Sonozaki Shion

The whole cast of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When They Cry) is pretty crazy. Sonozaki Shion has them all beat in this department. She is easily the most creepy and brutal.

She’s very clever and capable of bending situations to her own benefit. Her backstory has her ostracized by many, which led to a crippling despair. Her sudden breakdown leaves her with a murderous rage that is almost demonic.

Sonozaki is easily one of the more popular insane characters in anime. You can't get much crazier than becoming a full-blown serial killer.

1 - Johan Liebert (Monster)

Johan Liebert

Johan Liebert

And so, we come to the embodiment of madness! Nobody else is more fitting for the number one spot than the monster Johan Liebert!

He was the result of inhumane experiments. He came into existence with the aspirations of becoming the one that would lead humanity. He's nearly perfect in every regard. But there’s a huge drawback! No one ever imagined he would become a psychopath who craves for destruction and despair. He causes misery for his twisted worldview that is irrational.

As a kid, he managed to make 50 students and some instructors fight to the death as he watched his school burn. He possesses a deep understanding of human psychology—this makes him a formidable foe who can have power over anybody. His ability to manipulate others to do his evil bidding makes him the worst monster here.

I think that Lucy from Elfen Lied is pretty underrated in this rundown of “psychotic” characters..I also do think the show is underrated for being overrated when it comes to the story. The author wrote the manga based off a German poem which of course was named “ElfenLied” and it’s basically about a villager killing a female elf, feeling she was an outsider. Anyways, the concept of the story was that Lucy herself was a very scarred and traumatized child that would grow to only be a monster with quite a lot of strength to be shown. She isn’t exactly “psychotic” however, she does suffer from split personalities (Lucy, and Nyu) in which both personalities are very opposite. Most people don’t like Elfen Lied due to the fact that is is indeed a very gore filled manga/anime series but they also don’t consider the story or meaning that she (the author) has put alongside all the blood. Overall I do think she could be farther up maybe due to the fact that she is not very stable, and Elfen Lied is a series that has more than just blood and gore, it has a very bittersweet story behind it to go with every character.

I have to say a lot of these characters seem interesting, but I have one big issue with this list.

There's a huge difference between being Psychotic and being what we call a "psycho". A "psycho", someone like a sociopath, is truly terrifying and will do whatever they can to achieve their goals. Even killing other people.

Psychotic however is a different story. Being Psychotic is a mental illness that affects the mind in various ways, differing per person obviously. Mainly it means that people who are Psychotic have lost touch with reality or find it difficult to deduce what is real and what is not, most commonly referred to as "Delusions" or "Hallucinations"

All in all this is a great list and I will definitely be watching numbers 10, 7, 3 and 1. I just wanted to voice my opinion on this matter.

I lowkey think that if you look really deeply into it, Gon from hunterxhunter is pretty damn messed up in the head. His morality is ridiculous sometimes and especially in the chimera ant arc, you can gradually see him having a darker and darker mindset.

Cheeky Kid (author) from Milky Way on June 05, 2017:

@nipster Yup. Gaara is also psycho. He made a 180 degree shift in personality though after getting to know Naruto.

nipster on June 05, 2017:

Shuu that's a real nut job. Y'know who else would make this list... 12 year old Gaara.

Cheeky Kid (author) from Milky Way on May 03, 2017:

@Ally Totes agree! Are you updated with the manga? Hisoka just went full berserk! Crazier things to come!

Ally on May 03, 2017:

Thank you for including Hisoka! He is absolutely nuts and I love him for it!!!! Your list is spot on!

Link10103 on May 13, 2016:

They're all kind of random shows I thought sounded somewhat interesting, not all ones I would for certain watch

Cheeky Kid (author) from Milky Way on May 13, 2016:

@Link10103 100+ Bookmarked Shows?! Wow, that's a lot!

Cindy from United States on May 12, 2016:

Nice article. But I'd probably rank Tucker higher on the list. What he did was so disturbing.

Ced Yong from Asia on May 12, 2016:

Okay, that's a lot of anime for me to check out. :)

Link10103 on May 12, 2016:

Being reminded of the others, I wouldn't have pegged Light to be on the same level as them (outside of his final moments that is..)

I was looking for other anime to watch and realized I have Elfen Lied, When they Cry, and I think Monster to buried in my 100+ bookmarked shows. I know what I'm doing after work today...
