Agumon's Digimon History

Agumon's evolutionary tree is arguably the most famous in all of Digimon. As the companion to protagonist Tai Kamiya in the very first show, Agumon consistently unlocked his digivolutions faster than his teammates, showing us ferocious dinosaur-class Digimon.

Agumon has reappeared in different seasons, often with new branching Greymon evolutions—even a longtime fan like myself learned a few had escaped my radar. So, here are all the awesome forms of Greymon throughout Digimon!

Greymon

Greymon/BlackGreymon

Anime: Digimon Adventure

Agumon's infamous champion form resembles a tyrannosaurus rex with an imposing skull helmet. While aggressive, Greymon are noted to be intelligent, and they can fight from range using their Nova Blast fireballs.

Like many of his transformations, there's also a more feral BlackGreymon variant often seen in video games.

Greymon X

Greymon X

Greymon X

Manga: Digimon D-Cyber

A rare form only seen in a Chinese manga, Greymon X is a slightly leaner and stronger version of his base form, having upgraded Nova Blast into Mega Burst.

GeoGreymon

GeoGreymon

Anime: Digimon Data Squad

DS's Agumon travels down a similar yet slightly altered evolutionary path. His champion form is more destructive than a regular Greymon, having also mastered the Mega Burst technique.

MetalGreymon

Anime: Digimon Adventure

Sometimes called Vaccine and VirusMetalGreymon, Tai unlocks Greymon's standard Ultimate form by utilizing the Crest of Courage, letting him battle the fierce Etemon. MetalGreymon also has an upgrade called Alterous Mode, which transforms his right arm into an energy cannon.

MetalGreymon X

MetalGreymon X

MetalGreymon X

Manga: Digimon D-Cyber

A perfect mixture of organic and mechanical power, MetalGreymon X is even stronger than his base form, similarly utilizing the chrome digizoid metal to great effect.

SkullGreymon

SkullGreymon

SkullGreymon

Anime: Digimon Adventure

Eager for more power, Tai pressures Greymon to digivolve prematurely, but the stress results in the dark digivolution SkullGreymon. Immensely powerful, SkullGreymon doesn't differentiate between friend and foe, making him as dangerous to the DigiDestined as their enemies.

DeckerGreymon

DeckerGreymon

DeckerGreymon

Anime: Digimon Fusion

Combining the metallic armaments of Deckerdramon with MetalGreymon's raw power yields this hybrid warrior. While not especially effective against singular targets, Decker's wide-spread ranged attacks make him ideal for clearing waves of smaller enemies.

MetalGreymon Cyberdramon

MetalGreymon Cyberdramon

MetalGreymon Cyberdramon

Anime: Digimon Fusion

This fusion morphs Cyberdramon into a devastating canon for MetalGreymon to shred foes with. It's a cool form, even if MetalGarurumon might have made more sense as the fusion partner based on the design.

RampageGreymon

RampageGreymon

RampageGreymon

Manga: Digimon Xros Wars

This manga-only warrior combines MetalGreymon with Ballistamon and Dorulumon, adding their drills and armor to the already-monstrous ultimate.

RizeGreymon

RizeGreymon

RizeGreymon

Anime: Digimon Data Squad

Agumon's ultimate stage in DS is more agile, rapidly flying across the field to carefully aim his gigantic revolver, said to rival a nuke in power. Like most Greymon evolutions, RizeGreymon drew inspiration from real-world dinosaur Ceratosaurus.

DoruGreymon

DoruGreymon

DexDoruGreymon

DoruGreymon/DexDoruGreymon

Anime: Digimon

DoruGreymon is the valiant version of this dragon-like beast, though he actually morphs into the humanoid Alphamon. Conversely, DexDoru hunts other Digimon for sport and can digivolve into DexDorugoramon.

GreyKnightsmon

GreyKnightsmon

Game: Digimon Heroes!

Here's the fused form of MetalGreymon and AxeKnightmon, who you can see riding his mecha-dinosaur steed. Little is known about him, but his drill lance and gun turrets decimate most foes.

BurningGreymon

BurningGreymon

BurningGreymon

Anime: Digimon Frontier

The fourth anime changed the formula by having the humans themselves transform into Digimon; main character Takuya eventually unlocks this form. Like SkullGreymon in the first show, Takuya loses control and begins attacking his own allies, but unlike Skull, Takura eventually masters and continues to use the form.

Death MetalGreymon

Death MetalGreymon

Manga: C'mon Digimon

Basically a MetalGreymon with a Deathmon's face, this one's an obscure ultimate that even die-hard fans often overlook. It's one of Greymon's first variants, predating the Adventure anime that really got the series going.

Wargreymon

Wargreymon

BlackWargreymon

BlackWargreymon

WarGreymon/BlackWargreymon

Anime: Digimon Adventure

Alongside MetalGarurumon, WarGreymon was the first mega-class partner Digimon we ever saw, warp-digivolving for more power against the ferocious VenomMyotismon. Armed with vicious claws, a shield, and the Terra Force technique, WarGreymon's an immense threat from any range.

In 02, we also saw the anti-hero BlackWarGreymon, created for destruction but questioning his role in battle. BlackWarGreymon also has a variant called ChaosWarGreymon, but this mode is very rare, appearing only in the video game Digimon World 2.

WarGreymon X

WarGreymon X

WarGreymon X

Movie: Digital Monster X-Evolution

WarGreymon X can be found in several games and movies. He sacrifices some of his base form's aerial prowess for explosive speed bursts thanks to the rocket engines on his back, leading to his "Land War Hero" title.

VictoryGreymon

VictoryGreymon

VictoryGreymon

Manga: Digimon Next

Wielding the Dramon Breaker sword, VictoryGreymon highly resembles WarGreymon but prefers blades to claws. He's perhaps the most humanoid of all Greymon forms, more resembling a swordsman than a beast.

 ZekeGreymon

ZekeGreymon

ZekeGreymon

Anime: Digimon Fusion

The digivolution of Fusion's MetalGreymon, ZekeGreymon bears a unique appearance thanks to his gold digizoid armor, which is surprisingly lightweight despite its sturdy protection. His power equals that of fellow fusion fighter OmniShoutmon.

EmperorGreymon

EmperorGreymon

EmperorGreymon

Anime: Digimon Frontier

EmperorGreymon excels at any range thanks to his sword and crossbow. He also wields control over fire, making him a versatile mega who can attack with a variety of tools.

Samudramon

Samudramon

Samudramon

Manga: Digimon D-Cyber

Effectively a swordsman form of BlackWarGreymon, Samudramon could be considered the darker version of EmperorGreymon, although there's certainly some design differences, like his preference of two Japanese blades instead of a single broadsword.

ShineGreymon Burst Mode

ShineGreymon Burst Mode

ShineGreymon Ruin Mode

ShineGreymon

Anime: Digimon Data Squad

Like many Greymon forms, ShineGreymon can dark digivolve into ShineGreymon Ruin Mode when channeling hatred, offering extraoridinary power at the risk of devolving back to egg form. When properly channeled, he instead accesses Burst Mode, which offers a sword, shield, and wings made of pure fire.

BlitzGreymon

BlitzGreymon

BlitzGreymon

Anime: Digimon Adventure

A rare transformation, BlitzGreymon is cyborg type instead of warrior or dinosaur, and he favors electric attacks over fire, making him a useful counter against foes weak to lightning.

AncientGreymon

AncientGreymon

AncientGreymon

Anime: Digimon Frontier

Takuya eventually unlocks this form, originally belonging to an ancient mega whose draconic abilities were passed down to future Greymon evolutions. Does that mean AncientGreymon is the original ancestor from which all Greymon descended? Perhaps so, at least in the Frontier world.

Agumon (Bond of Bravery)

Agumon (Bond of Bravery)

Movie: Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution

While technically lacking the Greymon name, Bond of Bravery resembles WarGreymon and represents Agumon's strongest transformation, helping vanquish a foe even Omnimon couldn't defeat.

Other Dinosaur Digimon

Today we focused on the true Greymon family lines, but you'll find similar creatures in the Guilmon, Tyrannomon, Flarerizamon, and Dorumon families. There's also WarGreymon's various transformations with MetalGarurumon, like Omnimon, but for now, vote for your favorite mega and I'll see you at our next Digimon countdown!
