At a Glance: Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is the story of two naughty angels, Panty and Stocking, who were kicked out of heaven for their outrageous behavior, and have to earn their way back in. To do so, they have to fight monsters called Ghosts, so it has some elements of a magical girl plot. Panty can transform her panties into a gun, and Stocking can turn her stockings into a sword. And it's a lot of fun to watch these angels unleash hell.
Basically, Panty's funny thing about her is that she's promiscuous, whereas Stocking is Gothic and is madly addicted to sweets. Of them, I would say that Stocking is probably the better fighter, but Panty has more charisma, with legions of male fans ready to do her bidding. With them are Brief, a boy Panty calls "geek boy", who just sort of tags along, and Garterbelt, a black preacher whom the angels live with. The angels spend almost as much time fighting each other as they do fighting evil.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
13, +1 Special
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt reminds me of The Powerpuff Girls, Invader Zim, or Samurai Jack as far as animation style, taking me back to a nostalgic point in time before I watched anime on Cartoon Network, when I watched their Western cartoons. But don't let the style fool you, this is no kid's show. There is a lot of crude bodily and sexual humor. Think less The Powerpuff Girls and more Drawn Together. So if you like that, you'll like this show, and if not, you probably won't. One thing I definitely liked was the creativity in the animation and art style. The show really stands out from other anime because of its unique style.
I liked it because the main characters were so interesting and lively, which makes the anime fun to watch. That can be one of the flaws of the anime though, that the energy is over-the-top and clownish. The girls bickering with each other can get annoying too. But overall, I would say this looks like an enjoyable comedy series, and I definitely plan on finishing it.
