Mikado City, a place where a mysterious portal opens up and unleashes destructive invaders known as Neighbors. This is the catalyst for a change to a new world system. During the invasion, no one is able to stop the Neighbors until the arrival of a mysterious organization called Border. From then on, Mikado City stood with Border as its foundation, constantly learning of the technology known as triggers and fending off the troublesome invaders.

A few years later, a mysterious boy named Kuga Yuma shows up with unclear motives. He meets Osamu Mikumo, a Border trainee who happens to be his classmate. They become comrades in battle under the orders of Border.

World Trigger is an underrated anime and deserves a bigger audience. I feel it has all the ingredients to be a mainstream success. I suppose you already know how spectacular and awesome this show is if you're reading this. As such, I’m here to recommend some similar anime that features the same level of action and hype. Trust me, you’d never regret checking these shows out.

1. Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri

If you thought the title referred to a gate that connected our world to some unusual dimension, then you thought correctly. This series is similar to World Trigger in that the protagonists try to defend their homeland from an invading enemy. This show takes the concept to a larger scale as it extends past the borders of a city and involves the JSDF. As the narrative progresses, the military launches their own counterattack by stepping into the mysterious world that has opened up to them.

I’ve said enough so I’ll leave it at that! This is certainly a series worth checking out.

2. Nobunagun

Historical figures wielding badass weapons and fighting an alien invasion? Count me in! Believe it or not, this series is actually more action-packed than it sounds.

Nobunagun features weapons made from the enemy themselves; a similar concept is seen in World Trigger. The narrative is also very similar with invaders from out of this world and protagonists that try to save humanity. This is a show that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

3. Bleach

Bleach | Source

Bleach is another show that’s gigantic in action and colossal in combat. Battles are the main draw and the story progression does a great job at making smooth transitions from one fight to another. What’s great about Bleach is the variety seen in the weapons, powers, and skills. Getting to know the variety of these combat elements is what keeps audiences hooked!

The similarities this series has can be seen with the presence of the Soul Society. It is a world where spirits come from that can attack the human world. The heroes must fight these spirits to maintain order.

Bleach is certainly on par with World Trigger. However, this show is one of the most commercially successful series ever made and has a massive audience.

4. Kekkaishi

Kekkaishi | Source

Barriers and demons? Sounds like a crazy hell-wrecking combination! Demons from another realm try to enter and control the grounds of Karasumori High School. However, the Kekkaishi know how to create barriers to stop them.

The setup of this series is fairly similar to the battle waged between the Neighbors and those who wield triggers. This show takes a more fantasy-style approach to the narrative as the powers here are fueled by magic.

Kekkaishi is one hell of an action series that features drama as well. It is unique for bringing supernatural elements to the action genre. The show is more than worthy to be on this list.

5. Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)

Kekkai Sensen

A breach opens up in New York and monstrous creatures pour in. Doesn’t that sound all too familiar? Well, in addition, New York is engulfed by an impenetrable bubble and the humans are forced to co-exist with the creatures!

As if being breached is not enough, being trapped with weird creatures seems pretty dire! But that’s not the case as the denizens of New York adjust quickly to the mysterious scenario. But that adaptation has lead to chaos and anarchy.

This series is is a little sillier than other entries on the list. Everything is just plain crazy! But that doesn’t mean it brings less to the table. Kekkai Sensen is a gem that’s so unusual and unique that it’ll charm you into submission in its own wild ways.

6. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

There may be no otherworldly dimensional portals here in Shingeki no Kyojin, but there are titans! And I say that’s good enough! Include a gigantic wall protecting humanity and you’ve got a show that is similar enough to the others. There is even a special military squad here that is dedicated to taking down these man-eating giants.

This anime is always intense, even when it is slowed to a cerebral pace. But the action can certainly pick up and leave you breathless. You should not miss out on one of the biggest hits of the decade.

7. Date A Live

7. Date A Live

Okay, okay, the genre of Date A Live is very different from the other series mentioned. This one is more of a romantic-comedy. However, as soon as you see the story unfold, you'll see how they are similar.

Date A Live features creatures that bring devastating time-space quakes with them. Then, mystical creatures called Spirits arrive. They look very similar to humans, much like the Neighbors do.

This show and World Trigger have very similar traits despite being in different genres. Give Date A Live a shot and you'll see it is just as action-packed.
