Ever dreamt of living inside a game? Ever wanted to experience how it feels like living in a fantasy world that you could only see in games? Well, in Overlord, the main character, Momonga, gets transported to the world in his favorite game. And inside, he is the Overlord!

Is your interest piqued now? Given how great this show is, I’m showcasing the anime like Overlord to give you recommendations on what to add to your watch list.

Seven Anime Similar to 'Overlord'

  1. Log Horizon
  2. Sword Art Online
  3. Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
  4. No Game No Life
  5. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?
  6. Btooom!
  7. Ixion Saga DT

1. 'Log Horizon'

Log Horizon

A fantasy world based on a massively popular game. An uber-cool, clever, and powerful main character. A compelling story that’s full of interesting hijinks and incredible scenes. Log Horizon has all that and more. With all the similarities this series has to Overlord, it had to be on the list.

This anime is impressive. It’s unlike any other show with the same theme and genre. It focuses more on strategy and battles of wits and talent, rather than sheer strength and power. It focuses more on the political and economical aspects of a game-like world, rather than just the action and the usual elements you find in a shounen show. Given all these reasons, you should check this show out because it’s truly impressive on its own merits.

2. 'Sword Art Online'

Sword Art Online

Here comes another obvious contender! With a gaming world being central to the plot, Sword Art Online (SAO) was able to pull off a breathtaking story. It’s so awesome that not even the thousands of players trapped in Aincrad can deny the overwhelming grandeur of this anime.

Hailed as one of the most popular titles, SAO brandishes its sword in an action-packed and dramatic fashion. This show should be on your list of future viewing.

3. 'Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri'

Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri

A dimensional gate opens up in Japan and all sorts of mystical creatures pour in to try to invade the surrounding cities. Sounds really fantastical but dangerous, right? It’s a good thing then that present-day Earth is much more advanced than any medieval fantasy world. They may have had numbers in the past, but today we have technology and guns! And that pretty much sums up Gate: Jietai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri as a whole.

Our characters here are sent to the invading world to retaliate by invading them! This series is kind of an inversion of anime with similar narratives. This show even came out in the same season as Overlord, in Summer 2015.

4. 'No Game No Life'

No Game No Life

If it’s only fantasy or gaming anime that were talking about, then we have clear, undeniable entry on the list. It's No Game No Life!

Two genius Hikikomori and N.E.E.T. gamers named Shiro and Sora, together known as Blank, are asked to leave their boring world and move into the world of Disboard. It's a place where everything is decided and ruled by games!

This show has the fantasy and gaming aspects of other entries but is fairly unique in its own right. If I had to put aside the differences in story elements, I would say this would be most recommended anime on the list.

5. 'Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?'

For starters, Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka is also known as Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Doesn’t sound like a serious show, right? It actually doesn’t disappoint in terms of plot and characterization! It also feature a very fantastical setting.

This anime is set in a world that has elements from a game. It has a dungeon, characters with specific job classes, characters that act like NPCs, and more! It basically takes all the elements you can find in an adventure game and puts them in a more realistic light. And that’s what makes this show extra special. This anime is tailor-made for fans of fantasy games.

6. 'Btooom!'

Btooom! | Source

Now going to a much grimmer setting and plot, we have the bomb-packed action anime known as BTOOOM! Yes, it’s all about bombs and explosions here.

The main character, Ryouta Sakamoto, plays Btooom! It’s an online game where the main arsenal of a player is all sorts of bombs and explosives! At first, it was just a game he was extremely addicted to. Later on, it becomes his real nightmare! Along with a few others, he gets tossed onto an isolated island where he gets to play his favorite game in real life, much to everyone's horror!

This series is unique for taking the elements of a game and setting them up in the real world. This opens up the implication that fantasy worlds may be more than just products of fiction. So, if you like more action but want less fantasy elements, Btooom! is the right show for you!

7. 'Ixion Saga DT'

Ixion Saga DT

This series takes place in a game-based fantasy world but it has a much lighter story and a lot of comic relief. I now present Ixion Saga DT!

Kon plays a game that is set in the world of Alma. But now, with mysterious things happening around him, he gets transported into the game world! As an added bonus, he gets to travel with a crazy party with wacky members.

This anime is very much a comedy series. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a strong story though. Ixion Saga DT is as good as it is funny! It’s highly enjoyable and very wacky. You wouldn't regret giving this show a shot.
