Nothing goes in or out and the former residents of New York are constrained to live with the monstrous residents of the alterworld. As a result, crime, anarchy, and chaos become the norm inside and a despicable entity is trying to set that environment out to the rest of the world. And so, a secret organization known only as Libra takes on the responsibility of keeping the balance in the city and ensuring that Hellsalem’s Lot doesn’t unleash its brewing terrors to the outside world.

The Story: When a dimensional gate opened in the heart of Mikado City, creatures known as Neighbors came flooding in, terrorizing and abducting the residents. The Neighbors were so powerful and technologically advanced that the city was at the mercy of the ruthless invaders. Fortunately, a mysterious organization called Border came to the rescue and repelled the invading forces. From that day on, Border settled in to ensure that the city and its residents are safe from future attacks, as well as train agents and develop technology to prepare for another invasion happening in the future.

The Similarity: The plots here are nearly identical with a portal breach unleashing invaders into a city. There’s no barrier in World Trigger but the world is at risk nonetheless. This series has a fair amount of action as well as a narrative that’ll keep you engrossed until the end.

2. Durarara!!

Durarara!!

The Story: At first glance, Ikebukuro may seem a lot like a very ordinary city. But deep behind its simple facade lies mysteries that far exceed mere rumors and urban legends. Filled with gangs, crazy people, brilliant schemers, students, and a headless bike rider to top it all off, Ikebukuro is rustling with supernatural elements that are actually interconnected and part of a grander plan. Much to the surprise and anticipation of Ryugamine Mikado, a new student in the city, Ikebukuro has a lot of crazy things to offer that match how extravagant his personality is.

The Similarity: Here is another anime where the setting is certainly not normal. Mysterious events and supernatural phenomena constantly occur. It’ll just make you wonder what’s going to happen next. Durarara!! will constantly keep the viewer on their feet.

3. Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End)

The Story: Due to a mysterious virus that’s killed all people over the age of 13, and vicious vampires taking advantage of the grim situation, humankind is in despair. With the captive humans being treated as slaves and livestock for the vampires, the desolation just grows as the days go by. Years later, a group of children try to escape from the oppression of the vampires, only to suffer a great loss. Just one boy managed to escape. On that day, he vowed to put an end to all the vampires once he became stronger.

The Similarity: Owari no Seraph features vampires as the invading force, which is fairly unique compared to other entries on the list. This anime has an intriguing story and its progression will keep you hooked. The drama is well-written and the action scenes are top-notch as well.

4. Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

The Story: Since the dawn of time, two worlds coexisted in isolation from one another. One is the world of humans, Assiah, and the other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Both worlds have generally not had contact with each other, but the demons have found a way to breach the human world. Their goal is to possess humans. Satan, the king of Gehenna, is hell bent on conquering the human world. However, he needs a strong vessel to possess! With his power and his wits, he spawns a child in the human world to stand as his vessel in the future. But, as things turned out, the child of Satan became an exorcist—an adept who fights and drives away demons!

The Similarity: Demons are very popular when it comes to Japanese animation these days. This series is similar to Kekkai Senen in that they both share a similar genre mix. Ao no Exorcist includes action, comedy, and drama. The only real difference is that this series is more of a shounen, meaning it is catered to a younger audience.

5. Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis (Rage of Bahamut)

The Story: In a mystical world where humans, demons, and gods all live together, conflict is always present. But, unknown to all of them, there’ll come a day when they’ll all band together to defeat a common threat. With all their powers combined, a powerful seal was forged to trap the destructive Bahamut. And thus, peace came flourishing upon the land. A thousand years later, a vicious plan to release Bahamut dreadfully comes to motion.

The Similarity: We were just talking about demons, but here is another entry with them! Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis has lots and lots of demons! It also has lots of gods, just to be fair. Its character designs (especially for the main characters) need some getting used to, but that is only a small hurdle for this engaging anime.

6. Noragami

Noragami

The Story: In order to become revered, the gods have to build their reputation in the human world by any means necessary. One of them is Yato. He’s currently a lowly god with no redeeming qualities. One day, he saves a girl named Hiyori from being run over by a vehicle, which causes her to gain the ability of unconsciously projecting her soul out of her body. Hiyori teams up with Yato and his regalia, Yukine, in order to get her back to normal and to get Yato a higher status as a god.

The Similarity: Being part of the supernatural genre, Noragami is a show that will not be forgotten anytime soon. It feels like a slice-of-life series with added action and a deep narrative. There are interjections of comic relief between the action, which is pretty similar to Kekkai Sensen. If you enjoy that series, you will love this one.

7. Mekakucity Actors

Mekakucity Actors

The Story: Amidst the heat of the summer in a certain city, a group of kids with mysterious eye abilities venture into the unknown to seek answers for their uncanny situation. Their group is known as the Mekakushi Dan (Blindfold Gang), and their mission is to get to the bottom of the mysteries surrounding the city and themselves. Red eyes, unique abilities, the Heat Haze—who knows what sort of unbelievable things and events could happen in the sweltering heat of summer?!

The Similarity: The main character of Kekkai Sensen has the all-seeing-eyes of god as his power, so the abilities in this series immediately came to mind. This anime falls into the supernatural genre and the mystery at the center of the narrative is a great hook to draw in viewers.
