There seems to be quite an influx in mecha-themed anime these days. And for that matter, it’s becoming really difficult to just ignore them when titles such as Aldnoah.Zero springs up to get a hold of massive attention with its intuitive flow of story and sharp execution. That’s right, that’s the kind of anime “Aldnoah.Zero” is with its unpredictable characters spinning the story in crazy ways.

Given those pieces of thoughts, I’ve come to realize that not all mecha-anime are made with the same formula. That is why, right on this place, I’ve collected more Anime like Aldnoah.Zero to stimulate some speckle of light into the genre. But that’s not all, because the things included here on this list won’t just be centered on the mecha genre but also; the strategy, action, and unpredictability department.

Grab on to your mechanical unit now or at least prepare your mind stratagems as you get caught up in the encounter with the anime similar to Aldnoah.Zero.

Plot Synopsis of Aldnoah.Zero:

In a certain time in humanity’s history, the human race have come to live in division between two different societies based-up in two different planets – Earth and Mars. With the people on Mars -the Martians- gaining a mysterious power-force called the “Aldnoah”, they start to identify themselves as the superior-class and thus begins to plan a one-sided war against the people of Earth -the Terrans- and claim the planet for themselves. So, on the day the princess of Mars -Princess Asseylum- comes down to Earth for a peace treaty, an assassination attempt transpires. And thus, the vicious plans of the Martians sets into motion – wherein all hell breaks loose on the planet.

1. Gundam AGE

Gundam AGE

The Story: In a far-off future, humanity have adapted to live in space wherein they built space colonies as their safe havens. Moments of peace and bliss have been enjoyed by everyone for a very long time, until one day – an unidentified enemy (UE) strikes to lay waste upon the humankind!

One day, a young boy named Flit Asuno who experienced the terror of the attacks first-hand inherits from his deceased mom’s belongings the AGE device and a set of mysterious blueprints of what seems to be the powerful mecha-unit. And thus, fate starts to move and brings humanity’s destiny into the hands of three generations of young saviors who will be guided by the messiah known as - the Gundam.

The Similarity: From the fact that the unidentified enemies are from Mars and the fact that everything seems to be a one-sided war at first (favoring the overpowered enemy side), Gundam AGE has a lot of similarity with Aldnoah.Zero. Perhaps the strategic department is lacking with this one but, the train of emotions you’d feel watching this anime as well as the kick you’d experience with the battles unfolding before your eyes are as ginormous as you could expect. There won’t be any regrets if you watch this except if you really want some mindful and tactics-comprehensive battles.

2. Code Geass

Code Geass
Code Geass | Source

The Story: On the Holy Empire of Brittania’s conquest for power and territory, one of the most affected territories it caught by its merciless clutches is the country of Japan. Now disgraced with the name “Area 11” and the denizens stripped off their basic rights, Brittania oppresses the country and its people like they were nothing of worth. And so, with the situation as cruel and unjust as it is, a rebellion comes to bloom from within.

Exiled from his royal status and currently living as an ordinary student, Lelouch Vi Brittania gets caught up in the conflict of war. As he desperately tries to survive, he stumbles upon a mysterious girl named C.C. who has the ability to grant the power of kings – the Geass. And so, with Lelouch receiving the unique geass power of “Absolute Obedience”, he takes the opportunity to turn the tides of the war and bring his own hammer of justice upon the world in order to achieve his ultimate dream – a world where he and his beloved sister can live in peace.

The Similarity: There are robots, there are mysterious powers, there are genius-level mecha pilots, and a lot of twisted events. As if you’re watching a really intense game with all the physical, mental, and emotional faculties in play, you’d be overwhelmed by excitement and anticipation that you notice the time. And if I must say – Code Geass is one of the anime in this list that’s got the anime compared to it beat in all, if not most, departments.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed

The Story: With humanity separated into two factions -the Naturals and Coordinators-, the world is yet about to witness another great war between two powerful opposing forces.

On an ordinary day at the Heliopolis, no one knew that an attack by the coordinators was looming by the sky. As facts stand, Heliopolis was actually sheltering the newly-developed mobile suits in its territory – which prompted the enemy to attack. And as chaos and destruction was spreading throughout the city, four out five of the mobile suits were successfully destroyed by the enemy whereas the remaining one was luckily found by an ordinary student.

The student is Kira Yamato, and with the mobile suit standing before him and the danger fast-approaching, he’s got no choice but to pilot it himself for the sake of his survival and his friends’ safety.

The Similarity: As I have noticed, many mecha-themed anime have the same formula incorporated in them. And that’s a full-metal war of brains and brawn between two opposing factions. And as we are in now, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed is one of them. You shouldn’t underestimate it though, because the action, emotions, and the intertwining of events here are also strong. After all, its basis and overalls stems from a tried-and-tested winning formula.

4. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

The Story: Who would have thought that one day – humankind would live undergrounds eternally unaware of what it’s like to live in the surface.

The story sets off when a digger boy named Simon chances upon a weird drill-shaped object in one of his excavations. The object is a big mystery, but it seems like the power of fate is working within it.

Coaxed by a man with overwhelming will and determination named Kamina to come out of the darkness and explore the surface, Simon starts an adventure that will soon determine not just the fate of the whole human race nor just the whole world, but – the fate of the whole universe!

The Similarity: As this anime is renowned throughout the world as one of the best and most epic anime of all time, I should say that it’s quite got a share of qualities and traits with Aldnoah.Zero. While Aldnoah.Zero is a lot more toned-down and less crazy than this, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has the similar premise and similar genre in place. Let’s enumerate them; the weak humans, the twisted conflict, the conspiracy, the mind-blowing mecha-battles, and most importantly – the robots!

5. Kakumeiki Valvrave (Valvrave the Liberator)

Kakumeiki Valvrave (Valvrave the Liberator)
Kakumeiki Valvrave (Valvrave the Liberator) | Source

The Story: For Haruto and his classmates in Module 77 of JIOR’s sphere, everyday was a normal and carefree day for they were just students as ordinary as they can be. But, one day, when Dorssian army launches a surprise attack from out-of-the-blue, the whole student body was shaken into living a dreadful turn in their life.

As Dorssia was really after the powerful humanoid-robots known as the “Valvrave”, the last bit of the student body’s peaceful life came to a halt when Haruto saved them with the Valvrave and drove the enemies away. From then on, they all decided to detach Module 77 from JIOR’s sphere to work as an independent country as they do not know who to trust anymore. But, unbeknownst to them, the trials they’ll face are just lingering ahead and the world’s secrets are just waiting to be revealed through the power of the Valvrave.

The Similarity: Here’s yet another mecha-anime that’ll blow your hats off! Valvrave the Liberator shares some similarities with Aldnoah.Zero by possessing the themes and genre as well as a high level of action. But, as similar as they can get, this factor shows most prominent with having a huge conspiracy working in the background and having some characters that are so clever and battle-hardened they’re near impossible to beat. Also, the power behind the mecha units is something just as incomprehensible as what the Aldnoah is.

6. Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)

Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)
Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance) | Source

The Story: When a terror attack takes Japan by surprise, the only hint lies within an awry video in the internet. What seems to be two teenage boys posing on the screen are supposed to be the terrorist group known as the “Sphinx” spreading terror in the whole country.

Nobody has a clue what they want or what they are trying to do, but, the police are on it and the terror attacks seems to be leading closer and closer to the truth. Just what do they want? What’s their goal? Well, whatever it is – it seems to be like a really dreadful secret worthy of the world’s attention.

The Similarity: So, from mecha anime, we go to another kind of anime that isn’t so mecha at all. As a matter of fact, this one’s set in a world of the same current age we are in. And while things (science and technology) aren’t that as advanced in this one like the ones we’ve seen so far in the robot-clamored anime, this one possesses a degree of similarity within its slightest details. In Zankyou no Terror, we’ve got some characters who really have thought things out and have set their flawless plans into motion. Everyone’s motives are a mystery, but by the end, we get an explosion of all sorts of awe and satisfaction. And did I mention the art and the music? Those are again some of the identifying factors it has in line with Aldnoah.Zero.

7. No Game No Life

No Game No Life
No Game No Life | Source

The Story: In the world they lived in, Sora and Shiro (both known as “Blank”) are regarded as urban legends in the gaming department. No one can beat them as they have fully mastery of gaming. And the only ones who can beat them - is themselves!

And so one day, a weird email asks them if they feel like they’re not supposed to be in their world. As it holds, their answer was a yes. So after they’ve beaten the person who asked them the question in a game of chess, they were congratulated and sent to the world of Disboard.

Disboard is a world where there is no killing or robbery. It is a place where everything is decided by games. And the one who beats everyone in the games has the chance to face the one true god – Tet!

The Similarity: Okay, we’ve got no blunt distinctions between No Game No Life and Aldnoah.Zero. But, in the most subtle of ways, there are some likeness – but in different variations. And the most important of them, is the fact that one or two of the characters are genius enough be able to take any opposing foe into their hands and make them submit. So, if you liked the strategic component of Aldnoah.Zero, then you’d totally fancy over No Game No Life with its mind-blowing games and story. As a matter of fact, it’s unexpectedly one of the best in its own genre.
