Holding its roots deep within the same season as “Sakamoto desu ga?”—Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge (a.k.a. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless) is a very similar show with comparable vibes and feel. If Sakamoto himself is the definition of “cool” then, Tanaka-kun is the definition of “listlessness!”

Tanaka-kun is always listless! He’s always in a relaxed state and can sleep whenever and wherever he likes. He’s totally lazy and lethargic—it’s his way of life! Sure, he’s already a high school student but, no situation of any caliber can take him away from his own idle way of living. Good thing his friend, Ohta, as well as his other classmates are there to keep an eye on him.

That’s right—for now, here’s the student who’s the idol of all bored students everywhere! No class, no matter how boring, can be a match for him. Here’s the ultra-creative boredom buster, Seki-kun!

Seki-kun is a genius! He never pays attention in class, and yet he never gets caught! This is all much to the annoyance of his classmate, Yokoi, who sees everything he’s doing and tries to meddle but instead gets in trouble instead of him.

Seki-kun, with his creative mind and arsenal of anti-boredom methods, can create games and tiny, little distractions at any moment’s notice. Doodles, games, make-believe acts, and silly recordings—name it! Seki-kun is the master of killing time!

So if students can be cool then surely, teachers can be too! And speaking of teachers, I bet that everyone would agree that the coolest teacher of the all is the weird, wacky, octopus-like teacher—Koro-sensei!

Out of the blue, the moon got a huge chunk of it destroyed! The prime suspect? It’s an octopus-like creature of insurmountable power! Yup, that’s Koro-sensei! He’s Koro-sensei now because he asked the government if he could be a teacher for a year. If the government doesn’t agree, then the world is a goner!

Now, he’s teaching students academic excellence, as well as the ways of assassination for them to be able to assassinate him. Why he’s doing all this, who knows? One thing’s for sure—he’s no ordinary teacher. He’s actually the BEST TEACHER EVER! The only thing the students has to do now is to prosper in their academics and successfully assassinate him before they graduate. Failure to do so means—goodbye world!

Enter the perfect high school girl—Umaru Doma! In public (especially in school), Umaru is as awesome as she could be. She’s academically excellent, good at sports, beautiful, and literally oh-so-perfect! Everyone adores her to the tiniest detail. She’s unmatchable. She’s perfect!

Beyond her perfectness, nobody knows of her imperfect side. Umaru goes through a gigantic transformation the moment she steps on her home’s doorstep. She’s turns to “Umaru-chan” and only her brother knows about this!

As Umaru-chan, she’s lazy, geeky, spoiled, annoying, and did I say…SUPER LAZY! That’s Umaru-chan—perfect as a human in public but lesser-than-a-human in private, which all leads to a zany life with her brother and friends.

5. School Rumble

In terms of laughablity and wackiness, School Rumble is actually on par with “Sakamoto desu ga?” But, the most important factor putting this and that with respect to “likeness” is the existence of a character that’s basically like Sakamoto himself. For School Rumble, that character is—Karasuma Ouji!

Karasuma Ouji is an oddball! He’s weird yet he’s also perfect. He can do a lot of things. And he’s the crush of Tenma Sakamoto, the main heroine of the story.

Tenma has a crush on Karasuma. Harima Kenji has a crush on Tenma. Do you know what has formed? A love triangle! And it’s all happening in their school lives! This and that turns out to be a madcap mayhem! Who will get who? Who will end up with? The weirdness, the fun, the silliness—such is the story of School Rumble!

6. Medaka Box

If “Sakamoto desu ga?” has Sakamoto then, “Medaka Box” has Medaka! Although of a different theme and genre, Medaka Box has a similar feel. Sakamoto stands out with his style and coolness. Medaka, on the other hand, stands out for being almost too impeccable and faultless!

Medaka is the current president of Hakoniwa Academy. She got to her position with a hundred percent approval from everyone. (Talk about being perfect!) Now, she has set a Medaka Box for everyone to ask of a request of her, no matter how trivial. Her goal is to do her job flawlessly as well as reform everyone to the positive side if the situation asks for it.

For the term “main character”, Medaka is the embodiment of it! The whole universe is on her side. Victory is her game! Medaka is astonishingly—the excellent heroine!

If we’re talking about “cool” then we should talk about the one who’s unarguably the coolest hero of all! Do you know who I’m talking about? I’m talking about the hero who can beat any villain (or anyone in that matter) with a single punch! That hero is—Saitama! He’s the caped baldy—the One Punch Man!

Saitama is a Hero for Fun! He beats baddies and villains alike with his punches. Actually, just one punch is all it takes for him to claim victory. His secret? 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-km run every single day! Whew, doesn’t sound like much, but can you do all that? You’ll know it’s effective if your hair starts falling off till you’re bald. And that’s what it takes to be the One Punch Man!

If quirky shows are your thing, then I’ve got another one for you! This time, it’s a show about mouthwatering snacks and another character who’s also another oddball. What I’m talking about is—Dagashi Kashi and the weird but beautiful Hotaru Shidare!

Dagashi Kashi is all about “Dagashi”, the term for traditional Japapnese Snacks. In one village, there exists the Shikada Dagashi, a store that is owned by the legendary You Shikada with his son, Kokonotsu Shikada.

One day, a peculiar girl by the name of Hotaru Shidare visits the Shikada Dagashi to do some business.
