Juuni Taisen, otherwise known as Zodiac War, is one of the most engrossing and exhilarating anime series of 2017. Despite being concisely short and extremely fast-paced for a 12-episode series, it is fully capable of vigorously dragging you into a deep state of euphoria, forcing you to wish for a never-ending experience with it. If only it had a longer story duration and a much more extensive exploration of its characters, then it would have been perfect.

Juuni Taisen's plot, while certainly predictable, only makes the audience crave for more because of its deliberate and purposeful writing. Glaring predictability may be bad for most stories in general, but for Juuni Taisen, being intentionally predictable is what made it stand out as one of the most thrilling survival anime of 2017.

After witnessing the glory of this anime show, I am sure that you are out for more blood. And by that, I meant that you have this unstoppable urge of wanting to participate in a predacious hunt for more anime relatively comparable to it. The fact that you are here on this page just proves my point. That being said, I should stop with the pleasantries immediately and just get on with it. After all, the reason you are here is to discover anime shows that are very much similar to Juuni Taisen.

As the judge of the twelfth zodiac war, Duodecuple, would say: “Everybody, clap your hands!” Let your personal battle to watch more intense anime begin!

Do you like the idea of participating in a deadly survival battle royale, hoping that you’ll be granted any kind of wish the moment you emerge as the undeniable victor? If your answer is yes, then you should watch Fate/Zero as soon as possible!

Not only is Fate/Zero highly acclaimed because of its high level of action and thrilling plot, it is also very commendable due to the fact that all of its elements are well-blended and synchronized. To further amplify the caliber of the plot and action, the art, animation, and music were assimilated well enough to put everything in perfect harmony and balance.

Despite the verity that this anime was produced a few years ago, the hype it brings is still the real deal. You better not miss it for anything in the world because it truly is a rare spectacle to watch!

2. 'Btooom!'

If you want a much more realistic anime series take in terms of action and story, but still with the survival death-match setting, then Btooom! is the right show for you to watch next!

Btooom! may be an unfinished anime series, but so is its manga source. With its manga not yet reaching the end, it is still too early to assume that this anime is already done for. That being said, hope still exists! After all, this show's overall quality is topnotch! It is the kind of show that is capable of forcefully putting you on the edge of your seat. It is thrilling, evocative, and action-packed!

Many people are complaining about the lack of a second season for this anime. No one knows when it will come, but one thing’s for sure—Btooom! is absolutely a laudable action anime that deserves a special spot on your watch list.

3. 'Akame ga Kill!'

Akame ga Kill!

"Death flag alert!" You heard that right. I just said "death flag alert!" Because similar to Juuni Taisen, Akame ga Kill! has a whole battalion of death flags!

When I say death flag, I am referring to that sliver of clue you get when an anime is trying to foreshadow the death of a certain character. Juuni Taisen makes death flags so obvious by utilizing the zodiac sign pattern as well as its episodic presentation of character backstories. On the other hand, Akame ga Kill! invokes a similar concept for its death flags by deeply exploring the life of its characters before they die. Other than the death flags, both anime manages to make you feel empathy towards the characters no matter what their circumstances are—especially during their deaths. It may be heartbreaking to accept the inevitable, but life must go on.

I’ve been blabbering here on end about about death flags, but I will say no more. Actually, I’ll only say just one more thing—Akame ga Kill! is definitely worthwhile to watch! While it deviates slightly from its source material, it is still a must-watch anime given its great plot, heart-stopping action scenes, and curious setting.

4. 'Danganronpa'

Danganronpa | Source

You might be wondering why Danganronpa is here on this list. And the answer for that is—this anime show is also about killing and surviving. Although there is significantly less action in Danganronpa than in Juuni Taisen, it still proves to be an interesting survival anime to watch. Trust me, it is crazier than you think!

The first season of Danganronpa may be a little bland and confusing, but it just gets better after mysteries are revealed one after another. It is a very decent show to watch, but it gets even better once you reach the prequel and sequel episodes. Things just get crazier than ever before! The concept of Danganronpa is very interesting and unique so I urge you to try and watch it. Maintain the momentum until the very end and you're in for an unexpected yet special treat!

5. 'Rokka no Yuusha'

Rokka no Yuusha

Rokka no Yuusha may not be the best one among the titles listed here, but it is certainly a must-watch for other peculiar reasons. I know it is not the kind of anime that stands out when pointed at directly, but what makes it special is the weight of mystery in it. Yes, there is still a number of exciting action and fight scenes in its plot, but those are not what this show is all about. Rokka no Yuusha focuses more on the suspense of trying to figure out what is happening in the background and who is behind the mysterious events that are transpiring.

This anime certainly looks generic and plain at a glance. However, countless surprises await those who patiently wait for the plot to thicken and develop. Trust me when I say that you will definitely be caught off-guard and have more bolts from the blue coming your way! The other elements of this anime are decent at most, but those shouldn’t stop you from choosing it and giving it a chance. Come and try watching it. Who knows? You might just enjoy it in a way wholly different from the other spectators.
