The Story: This is the story of how a mischievous, notorious, and lonesome young ninja named Naruto struggled and persevered, only to achieve his greatest dream—to become the village Hokage! He has a rather unique predicament though; he has the nine-tailed demon fox sealed within him. Also, he is disliked by nearly everyone in the village. And so, he literally has to start from zero. But with his guts and undying will of fire, Naruto will surely do his best to reach his goal.

The Similarity: Surprise! Obviously, Naruto would be on this list because it sounds exactly like Boruto. And that’s not even a quarter of the reason for it because Boruto is actually—wait for it—Naruto’s son! Woah there! This is, after all, the reason why Boruto’s full anime title is “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.” It’s the next generation of Naruto and all the ninja hijinks everyone have so enjoyed in the past!

2. Naruto Shippuden

Naruto Shippuden

The Story: After two and a half years have passed since the events of the first half of Naruto, the teenage ninja is now back in Konoha after rigorous training. Now, the criminal group Akatsuki are on the move to execute their devious plans. Naruto has no choice but to fight whilst continuing in trying to reach his aspirations of becoming the Hokage.

The Similarity: Next in line is...Naruto Shippuden! What the heck?! Why is this here? It’s basically the same as Naruto. Well folks, Naruto Shippuden actually counts as a separate show. It’s part two, and it concludes the Naruto series. It’s here because without it ending and all, Boruto wouldn’t even be in existence.

3. One Piece

One Piece

The Story: Monkey D. Luffy has but one ambition—to become the Pirate King! Becoming one is not easy as it sounds though. In order to become one, one has to venture through the perilous seas of the world. Also, the marines are in hot pursuit when it comes to pirates. Luffy is starting from scratch and he’s not even a real pirate yet. But who know? This might be the beginning of one-of-a-kind grand pirate adventure!

The Similarity: If there’s a shounen anime that shouldn’t be missed here, then that would be One Piece. I mean, it’s one of the most popular anime out there. It actually goes toe-and-toe with Naruto. And so, lining it up with Boruto is a must!

4. Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)

Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)
Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) | Source

The Story: In a world where the majority of the populace has unique powers known as quirks, it is inevitable that two groups would branch out from them—the heroes and the villains. Young Izuku Midoriya has always dreamt of becoming a hero. Unfortunately, he was born quirkless. He has no power. The only thing he has is the heart of a true hero. And so, luckily one day, he stumbles upon the most popular hero whom he strongly idolizes—All Might! It seemed like a very simple encounter but, it actually wasn’t! It was the beginning of a new age. Midoriya has finally found the ticket to his heroic ambition.

The Similarity: Talk about older generations passing the baton to the younger generations. Yup, that’s exactly what Boku no Hero Academia (a.k.a. My Hero Academia) has as a central theme. From veteran heroes to budding heroes—it’s time to continue the legacy of keeping the world safe from danger and villainous treachery.

5. Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball

The Story: Out there, there are seven dragon balls. It is said that when all seven are collected and combined, a dragon will appear and grant any wish. Son Goku has one of the dragon balls and Bulma wants it terribly. And so, Goku tags along with her experiencing all kinds of adventures in the process. Little did they both know that one day, Goku and everyone else would take a gigantic role in the greater view of things in the universe.

The Similarity: Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without the mention of Dragon Ball. This show is the basis/role model of many shounen anime series today. As for this case, it encompasses several generations of baddie-kicking characters that have the ultimate goal of safeguarding peace and upholding harmony. And so, it’s put here to serve as a reminder that it’s a classic that has its influence reaching even Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

6. Hunter X Hunter

Hunter X Hunter

The Story: Gon Freecs is a 12-year-old boy who’s on his way to taking the extremely difficult and dangerous hunter licensure examination. As to why he badly wants to participate is because he’s trying to track his father who is a renowned hunter and who had abandoned him when he was still a baby. Along the way, he meets friends who he could put his trust on. The path to becoming a hunter is a treacherous one so he needs all the help, resources, and luck he needs.

The Similarity: When it comes to adventure, nothing has Hunter X Hunter beat! It’s exciting, action-packed, urbane, thrilling, and oh-so-good that it is a series that stands tall in the world of anime. And that is why it’s here. Hunter X Hunter is one heck of a show that no anime watcher (especially shounen fans) should miss.

7. Fairy Tail

It’s none other than the infamous wacky and crazy guild, Fairy Tail. On her way to Fairy Tail, she fatefully stumbles upon the popular “Salamander,” Natsu Dragneel! And so, her place is assured. It’s her time to shine. She’s now part of the Fairy Tail guild and her magical adventures are about to go wacky and crazy as well!

The Similarity: Fairy Tail is full of laughs and rad adventures—this no one can deny! And just like Boruto, Fairy Tail is something big that it will definitely leave a legend. It’s popular, it’s massive, it’s very entertaining—Fairy Tail surely is many times more than its worth.

8. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

All that changes though when he found a mysterious drill-like object while he was digging tunnels. With his determination strengthened by Kamina, Simon begins to alter the fate of humanity. With a drill at hand, he shall pierce the heavens and bring back what actually belongs to humanity—the surface world!

The Similarity: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a show that embodies the word EPIC! Yes, EPIC! It’s a legend! It’s a grand tale! And most of all, it’s a legacy! To put in simple terms, Kamina is to Naruto as Simon is to Boruto. If you watch it and finish it, you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

9. World Trigger

The Story: In Mikado City, a dimensional gate just opened up. From this gate, beings called “Neighbors” came pouring in droves. All had become hopeless with the attack of the neighbors. But then, a mysterious organization by the name of Border came to the rescue. Years later, the danger embodied by neighbors is still a threat but, Border has already settled. It’s now Border’s job to protect everyone and train young people to take over and assist in the battle against the neighbors.

The Similarity: World Trigger is treated like an underdog and is mostly underrated but, it’s actually so good it’ll knock your socks off your foot. Yes, it’s also a shounen anime and it has battle scenes that are so exhilarating they’ll drive you crazy. Also, it has a great story and premise so watching it certainly won’t leave you with regret.

10. Soul Eater

And with the Lord Death’s reign is a school that trains meisters and weapons who will aid in keeping peace and balance in the world. And from the meisters and weapons will come the ultimate armaments—the Death Scythes!

The Similarity: About Soul Eater—it’s quite old school now and it didn’t accurately follow its manga counterpart but HEY—it’s one that is very unique and electrifying to watch. The main characters are mostly students in a meister and weapon school right in the middle of Death City. Sounds interesting? Heck it is! And there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.
