Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.
Were you lured in by the mystery of Boku dake ga Inai Machi (also known as ERASED)? If so, I don't blame you. This anime is also full of feelings and thrills!
In ERASED, Satoru, our protagonist, travels to the past with an ability called "Revival" in order to prevent a tragedy. Easier said than done. Messing with time is way more complicated than it seems.
If you found yourself wanting more while you watched the ending credits scroll, here are 10 great anime that are similar in theme and plot. Move on from the tragic past and move towards the wonderful future (with these anime)!
Top 10 Anime Like ERASED
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica
- Zetsuen no Tempest (Blast of Tempest)
- Shinseki Yori (From the New World)
- Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When They Cry)
- Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)
- Anohana (The Flower We Saw That Day)
- Death Parade
Desperately tinkering with the past just to change an inevitable outcome? That's Steins;Gate for you, which is why I think this is the most similar title with respect to Boku dake ga Inai Machi.
Time travel, destiny reversal, saving a girl, psychological drama—I’d say Steins;Gate really has it all. As someone who has watched both, I can say that they are more than what you expect.
Change the past, alter the future. Add some madness and a viciously dark plot and you’ve got a thrilling anime worthy of praise!
2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
So this is another one of those shows riddled with out-of-this-world twists and crazy time-loop elements thrown into this chaos.
Cute little magical girls, an adorable and fluffy pet-like creature, a seemingly normal life clad with a bit of magic—what could possibly go wrong? As we inevitably find out, magic actually comes with a price. And in Puella Magi Madoka Magika, the price is GRAVE.
Magic mayhem, witchery, an evil cutesy creature—what started as an innocent magical girl anime progresses into something sinister!
3. Zetsuen no Tempest
Ever heard of Tempest? The one by Shakespeare? Well, if you know it and realize that it ain’t easy reading and making something out of Shakespeare’s work, then you understand the complexity of this anime.

Zetsuen no Tempest is full of mind games and unexpected twists. One second you’re in a normal world, then in another, you’re trapped in a war between space and time. The trees of Genesis and Exodus are at war, and the only chance of redemption is unraveling a mystery.
This show is smart as it is mysterious, so prepare yourself by sharpening your wits.
- 7 Anime like "Zetsuen no Tempest"
When it comes to mind-blowing anime with lots of twists and brilliant stratagem, "Zetsuen no Tempest" comes as one. Saying so, I've listed down more anime like "Zetsuen no Tempest" for everyone to see.
4. Shinsekai Yori (From the New World)
What the hell happened to the world? Why is it in ruins? Why is there only this one eerie town remaining? Shinsekai Yori is packed with mystery.
Hundreds and thousands of years into the future, humanity is in dire shape. Yes, people have psychic powers, but everything is balanced on a thin thread of survival. One wrong move and . . . POOF . . . extinction! That’s what Shinsekai Yori tries to tackle.
This isn’t your ordinary anime. It’s clad with psychological phenomenons that will surely render you bewildered! It’s beautiful and cruel at the same time. Just wait until you reach the end.
5. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni has a darker atmosphere than Boku dake ga Inai Machi. The latter will make you feel all sorts of melancholic feelings and whatnot while Higurashi will make you go mad.
All the characters in Higurashi have definitely gone insane, and that’s what makes it one-of-a-kind. I’m sure the phrases “Expect the unexpected!” and “Don’t judge a book by its cover!” were made for this one.
6. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)
In terms of psychological magnitude, story, and character development, Mirai Nikki truly outshines many other titles.
It’s crazy, it’s whacky—it’s one of a kind. A group of random people must fight (with the help of their cellphones) to stay alive and emerge victoriously.
Mirai Nikki is a kindred spirit of ERASED in one way or another. Both ends in a grand final reveal. I really REALLY recommend it, so watch away!
7. Anohana (The Flower We Saw That Day)
Anohana is an anime that brought tears to many. It should be no mystery as to why it was included on this list. I mean, it’s about saving a childhood friend and walking towards a brighter tomorrow.
Anohana is truly a gem! It is both emotional and touching. The protagonist tries to help a certain ghost girl by asking his friends for help. They then work together to solve the mystery. It sounds simple, but it's definitely tear-worthy!
It’s the same as ERASED, minus all the suspense and darkness. Anohana is lighter, but has the same emotional vibe.
- 10 Anime Like "Anohana" ("The Flower We Saw That Day")
Here's a list of the Anime like "Anohana." Tear-jerkers, they might be! But one thing is for sure, they're all grand and beautiful. Happy watching!
Yes, Colorful is an anime movie. But that doesn’t mean it’s not great. It’s unfair to judge something based on its length. This is a movie that’s worthy of lots of praise!
Colorful talks about death, redemption, and changing the wrongs of the past. Life is beautiful and it is precious beyond doubt. The protagonist's goal is to relive life and do what is right this time.
This show is about “second chances” and “fixing mistakes,” just like how ERASED is about erasing the despicable past.
Charlotte is charming in its own way. If only it just expanded more and dug deeper, it could have beaten the competition easily. But well, too late for that. It’s still a good anime, and that’s why I’m putting it here.
The events of the plot are in a time loop. And as you probably know, time travel always leads to surprising twists. Charlotte was decent, but you may not find it as satisfying as ERASED.
10. Death Parade
As I've read somewhere else, "If 2015 had Death Parade, then 2016 has Boku dake ga Inai Machi!" I definitely agree with these words.
Death Parade is brilliant and insanely good. It deals with death as if it's a casual walk in the park. Even so, this anime is very emotional at times and has its comedic moments as well.
There are concrete differences, and Death Parade has its own uniqueness, but it surely has the same essence as ERASED. It's more psychological than thrilling, but nonetheless, it's similar.

After finishing Hunter x Hunter finally, Think Tempest and Steins Gate are on my next to watch list...
Outside of colorful, I've either seen or bookmarked the rest and will get to them eventually.
