Overlords of Anime
When it comes to anime the big three are Bleach, Naruto and InuYasha. Yet, when it comes to the underdogs, and the unknown, these top ten animes have the plot, action, and graphics to join the big three in any anime line-up.
Top Ten Best Animes
10. Angel Beats!
Daily rock concerts during assemblies, intricate classroom antics, not to mention the fact that these teens are attending high school, in the afterlife. New student, Otonashi, who lost his memories after dying, becomes enrolled in this afterlife school, where he meets Yuri, the president of the Battlefront gang. Battlefront fights against God and his plan to make everyone do what is right at school. Students in this academy carry UZIs, AK-47s, katanas and even a medieval style ax. You're probably wondering why? Because God created Angel.
This means standing up against her. Angel, the antagonist, is not only the student body president, but she keeps everyone in check, with force. She's a special girl with the ability to program weapons out of her body for combat. The only rule in this school is that those who follows the rules disappear and those who don't, well, they live to fight another day against Angel. I love this anime because rock music, weapons, and the surprise twist ending made me wish there was a season two. That's why Angel Beats! made it to numero 10.
9. High School of the Dead
One word: Zombies. With 2012 coming to a close and the possibility of a zombie apocalypse. Taking zombie killing tips from this anime will probably keep you alive at least until the New Year. Starring Takashi Komuro, Rei Miyamoto, Saeko Busujima, Saya Takagi, and Kohta Hirano, five high school students who have survived a zombie-virus are now on the run, trying to escape their neighborhood while evading the gross flesh eaters.
When it comes to zombies... I hate them. Who doesn't? But, this anime is cool enough and give geeks such an awesome role. I don't want to say too much about it. But, just three words, Bikinis, Babes, and Blood. Nuff said. That's why H.O.T.D. is numba 9 on this list.
8. Deadman Wonderland
This anime is actually a new one for me. I started watching it on Adult Swim and let's just say it peaked my interests. When a powerful earthquake sinks most Tokyo into the ocean civilization as we know it goes down with it. Ten years after the accident, Ganta Igarashi, a normal middle school student is transformed by red crystal shards implanted into his chest by the Red Man. This dude not only kills everyone in Ganta's class, but the poor kid is framed and unjustly sentenced to death and spending some time in Deadman's Wonderland. this place is pretty much Disney World on Meth.
There's a lot of strong language, and some gruesome scenes since, surprise, the crystals cause biological abnormalities (AKA: Superpowers). When the owner of said crystals puncture their skin, their blood can be morphed and used to form powerful twisted weapons. You just need to watch one episode to be hooked, and since the story is easy to follow you won't feel so lost getting into it.
7. Tokyo Mew Mew
What's cuter than a pink-haired, cat-eared girl, with a frilly pink outfit? A wolf-eared girl with a purple outfit. Tokyo Mew Mew, known as Mew Mew Power in America follows the life and times of Ichigo Momomiya and her friends. She becomes a cat-like superhero, while attending an endangered species exhibit with her crush, Masaya. Ichigo and the Mew girls, which consist of a Gray Wolf, Finless Porpoise, Blue Lorikeet, and a Golden Lion Tamarin work together as maids at the Mew Cafe in their human forms.
But, these spicy chicks protect the Earth from aliens that use animals as puppets in their evil schemes. I find that so rude. Even though this is an older anime, and I have not seen it in America within the past five years. The Japanese version starts strong and finishes with a deeper meaning of life on Earth. That makes T.M.M. my number 7 pick.
6. Rosario + Vampire
I'm not really into vampires, but, when I found out this show had a werewolf and succubi, I could not say no to R+V. This story pretty much follows every other romantic vampire storyline, but with a twist. In a school of monsters that hates humans, a human (ironically), Tsukune is accidentally transferred there. His first friend becomes a vampire chick, Moka, who loves to "kiss" his neck.
Even though she fears humans, she vows to keep his secret from the other students.Trouble seems to follow Tsukune, but in the end enemies become best friends and allies. I really like this show, overall. It does take some work getting used to the bubbly alter-ego of the busty vampire student. So, just stick with it. This is number 6 on the list for good reason. Trust me, this show "sucks", but in a good way.
5. The Book of Bantorra
This show I'm just getting into it. I automatically loved the fast paced theme song. I think that's one of the main reasons why I tune in. This story follows a group of librarians (cool) that fight for books made from the lives of those who have passed (awesome), using their psychic abilities to keep them away from the Church (mind just exploded).
It's superb on different levels but what really impresses me is the premise and topic of the show. Librarians protecting books, which holds the souls and stories of those who passed. Without giving too much away, a single touch by this show will keep you firmly planted in your chair and that's why this made it to 5 on my list.
4. To Loveru
Here we go, more cute, pink-haired girls, in girly outfits that would make a Barbie blush. Alien Lala escapes her home world, planet Deviluke and her father, who is of course King of the Universe. She falls into the sensual clutches, of oblivious Earth human Rito. He, unfortunately has a crush on Haruna and she doesn't even know it yet. Rito become Lala's accidental fiancé, and ends up receiving all the baggage that comes with being engaged.
All this because of one little bath late at night (spoiler). I'm glad to put this on my list because what's cuter than an alien and her child-size father. Not to mention, she has a tail, and no one seems to notice but Rito and some close friends. That's awesome! This show is so number 4, for that reason alone!
3. Xam'd: Lost Memories
This is tough, I actually saved this spot for the anime Fooly Cooly, but, Xam'd has stolen my heart. Three high school students, are on their way to well, school, but a suicide biological bomber sets off a parasitic bomb which lodges itself in the arm of the main protagonist, Akiyuki. Long story short, this causes a rift in his friendships with Haru and Furuichi.
A couple years later, Furuichi joins the Mainsoul military with Haru and try to get a handle of the inhuman creatures that wreak havoc on their small community. Akiyuki becomes the host of a powerful creature known as a Xam'd, sort of like a superhero with memory lost. He must remember his name or lose his mind. With the help of Nakiami, who is like a Xam'd whisperer, and a bunch of postal service workers that specialize in kicking butt. The ending is touching. The twists aren't predictable. This anime deserved to be number 3. Sorry Fooly Cooly.
2. Full Metal Alchemist
Who doesn't love a short older brother and his mechanical younger brother. Ed and Al Elric are two boys who had their mother ripped out of their lives. They get involved with alchemy in order to put her back together again. Only problem: the Equivalent Exchange concept. One cannot gain something without giving up a piece of themselves, literally.
Without ruining the storyline, these kids grow up and become some of the most powerful alchemists in the world. Their power even surpasses their father. Still, all I'm going to say is that this anime stands on its own and has a lot of strong seasons, movies, books, and all that good stuff. In fact, this anime is right there with Bleach and Naruto, but because I love it so much and rarely hear about it anymore, I placed it on my list. Congrats number 2!
1. Blue Exorcist
The first two minutes of the episode freaked me out. I'm not going to spoil that for first time viewers! That's why it wins, hands down. You can't understand the beginning until you watch the end. I'm not giving anything away. All I'm going to say is cute twin brothers, ultra powerful well-known father, and horns with a pointy tail. This anime blows your mind, and even causes a tear or two. However, the thing that kept me coming back to this show other than the awesome graphics was the opening and ending songs. ROOKIEZISPUNK'D deserves to have their name flashed here. Awesome show, #1!
There are a billion other animes I have yet to mention. But, these three unique animes deserve this spot and the place in my heart for life.
